It's Monday and this is Newsround.

:00:00.:00:00.

Our big story today - we take a look at whether tests

:00:00.:00:11.

First, how do you feel when you have exams coming up?

:00:12.:00:25.

Confident, worried or a bit stressed?

:00:26.:00:27.

Hundreds of thousands of pupils in England will take

:00:28.:00:30.

Standard Assessment Tests, or SATs this week.

:00:31.:00:32.

In a survey for Newsround 87% of 10 and 11 year olds questioned said

:00:33.:00:37.

they feel pressure to do well in school tests.

:00:38.:00:42.

Hayley's being speaking to children in Manchester

:00:43.:00:44.

So, how are you feeling about your tests coming up soon?

:00:45.:00:58.

I do feel quite pressured because I don't want to mess

:00:59.:01:00.

I get a rush. You feel like you've forgotten everything.

:01:01.:01:10.

I feel ready, there are some things I need to go over like fractions.

:01:11.:01:18.

Preparing for any test can be a stressful time and it's

:01:19.:01:21.

going to be a really busy week for hundreds of thousands of ten

:01:22.:01:24.

and eleven years olds who start their week of SATs today.

:01:25.:01:27.

The tests in England keep track of how primary school

:01:28.:01:29.

They can also affect which class students go

:01:30.:01:32.

into when they move up to high school.

:01:33.:01:34.

Every single one of those is correct...

:01:35.:01:38.

The lessons taught in schools and the way children are tested

:01:39.:01:41.

Some people say it means the tests for Years 2 and 6 are now too hard

:01:42.:01:47.

but the government says tougher tests will mean better results

:01:48.:01:49.

Scotland got rid of tests but plans to bring them back.

:01:50.:01:54.

Hundreds of children answered questions in a survey for Newsround

:01:55.:01:57.

More than half said say they feel "some pressure" to do well,

:01:58.:02:04.

while over a quarter said they feel "a lot of pressure" .

:02:05.:02:07.

Many said they feel nervous before tests while others said

:02:08.:02:10.

And they told us the pressure can make them sad and moody and can even

:02:11.:02:19.

But nearly half of children questioned said they didn't mind

:02:20.:02:25.

taking the tests, and some even said they enjoyed them.

:02:26.:02:27.

Last Tuesday meant a day out of school for some children -

:02:28.:02:33.

their parents kept them off in protest at the way

:02:34.:02:35.

Thousands of people signed a petition telling the Government

:02:36.:02:41.

the tests put children under too much pressure.

:02:42.:02:44.

The government says that tests are important and should not be

:02:45.:02:47.

If there were other children feeling stressed and worried like you guys,

:02:48.:03:01.

Keep calm and just try to keep your mind off it until it comes.

:03:02.:03:10.

Even if your best is not as good as your friend's best you can't do

:03:11.:03:14.

any better than that you just have to try.

:03:15.:03:18.

Lots of 10 and 11 year old all over the country are sitting SATs this

:03:19.:03:25.

week. The Newsround Survey found that 87% of the 10 and 11 year olds

:03:26.:03:28.

questioned felt pressure to do well in school tests.

:03:29.:03:30.

Pressure can make you feel nervous and worried so what can be done

:03:31.:03:33.

Joining me on the sofa is Sarah Chilvers,

:03:34.:03:37.

Hi Sarah, thanks for coming in this morning.

:03:38.:03:42.

As we heard, lot of emotions. How do kids cope with how they are feeling

:03:43.:03:49.

during exam time? You are right, there are a lot of emotions during

:03:50.:03:53.

exam time. Children can feel nervous, anxious, and it is really

:03:54.:03:59.

important that young people find a way to cope with these feelings.

:04:00.:04:04.

Looking after yourself is the number-1 priority. Getting lots of

:04:05.:04:08.

sleep, eating well, and regular breaks. And doing things that you

:04:09.:04:15.

enjoy and make you feel relaxed. That can be going for a walk,

:04:16.:04:19.

reading a book, it could be watching TV. Just to break up the stress of

:04:20.:04:29.

the preparation of exams help to calm you down and if your feelings

:04:30.:04:33.

are becoming overwhelming and you are feeling quite anxious, take nice

:04:34.:04:38.

deep breaths, and slow down your breathing. All of those tips can

:04:39.:04:42.

help you cope. I guess it is important to talk to someone. At

:04:43.:04:47.

ChildLine, you must get a lot of calls at this time? We do see a lot

:04:48.:04:53.

of calls from children around exam time. It shows how stressful a time

:04:54.:04:58.

it can be for them. I guess it is really important to look after

:04:59.:05:03.

yourself during that time? Are you surprised by our figure there, 87%

:05:04.:05:08.

of kids? I'm not surprised at all. We get a lot of young people calling

:05:09.:05:14.

at this time of year specifically, relating to anxiety and feelings and

:05:15.:05:19.

worries around exams. How should they be revising? How should they be

:05:20.:05:24.

coping? And how they are feeling about their results, will they be

:05:25.:05:30.

doing as well as they expected? Or not? I guess it is important to

:05:31.:05:35.

breathe, and stay calm. Thank you for talking to us about

:05:36.:05:37.

this important subject. Don't forget there's loads

:05:38.:05:40.

you can do to stop yourself And if you are feeling worried

:05:41.:05:43.

about your tests then Hayley has And if you want to hear how some

:05:44.:05:46.

of CBBC's famous faces have coped with exam nerves, then head online

:05:47.:05:51.

to watch their advice. That's all from me, Newsround's back

:05:52.:05:54.

at 4.20 this afternoon with Ayshah.

:05:55.:05:58.
