This is Newsround, we're live on CBBC with all the latest | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
for you this Thursday morning. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
I'm Ricky. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
Get ready as we launch our Tim Peake countdown into space. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:13
And the grumpiest cat in the world gets a double! | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
This is Newsround, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
First this morning, heavy rain has caused more flooding in parts | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
of Cumbria in the North West of England. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
A river in the village of Glenrriding has burst its banks | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
for the second time this week. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
The army as well as police and fire fighters helped to move | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
people to safety. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
BBC's Fiona Trott has sent us this report from Appleby where they're | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
keeping a close watch on the river. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
There was 40 millimetres of rain overnight, that's about an inch | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
and a half and you can see what that's done to the river level | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
here in Appleby. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
It's almost reaching the pavement. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
And all these floods here in Cumbria are having a devastating effect | 0:00:58 | 0:01:02
on local businesses. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
Let me show you this shop here. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
They've had to throw everything out, look at those cupboards, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
shelves, fridge freezers, everything taken out and left | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
here on the streets. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Let me show you this too, a huge mountain of fizzy drinks, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
crisps, chewing gum, milk, all gone to waste. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
All of the things that were inside the shop probably cost | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
thousands of pounds. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
But there's nothing that they can do because all of this now | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
is contaminated by the flood water. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
So, the clean-up operation continues here in Appleby this morning | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
but everybody is keeping a very close eye on that river level. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:44
Now, you might not expect to see penguins on the beach, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
but in South Africa that is exactly where they live. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
But their numbers have been falling. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Here's Jenny to explain why. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:57
African penguins only live on the West Coast | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
of South Africa and Namibia. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
They are pretty cool characters who happily swim amongst humans | 0:02:00 | 0:02:05
and share the beach with sunbathers. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
They are very sociable animals too. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
A pair of penguins bond for life and go on to have chicks. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
However, the number of African penguin pairs has dropped | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
from about 32,000 in 2004 to just over 3,000 in 2014. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:24
The decline is fairly rapid. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
If you think back to 1930, there were 1 million breeding pairs. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
So we have lost 98% of the original population. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
Experts think this is because the sardines and anchovies | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
they feed on are disappearing, leaving the penguins starving. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
A combination of overfishing and climate change is thought to be | 0:02:43 | 0:02:49
at fault, as the sea becomes too warm for the fish the penguins eat | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
to survive in. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
Conservation experts are trying to develop colonies closer | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
to the Southern waters the fish have moved to so the penguins | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
are able to breed. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
We're obviously doing everything we can to release as many pairs back | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
into the wild but the concern is it's not slowing down. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
Something needs to be done fast if we want to try and save these | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
plucky penguins and other animals at risk of extinction | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
as the planet warms up. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
We've been asking what you guys thought about a ban by the Football | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Association. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
They're stopping newspapers and websites from reporting scores | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
from under 11s matches. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
They said it was in case it caused upset to the losing teams. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
Here's what some of you had to say. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Ten-year-old Lara said, I think that football should be | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
competitive because that's what football is all about! | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
Stanley from Glasgow says, I don't like losing but I don't feel | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
bad about it. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:44
It's all part of the game of football. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
Koda who's 12 said, my little brother can get upset if his team | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
loses and it's published in the school newsletter. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Thanks very much for all of your comments. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
To football now and it was a pretty good night for English clubs | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
in the Champions league last night. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:02
Chelsea won 2-0 against Portugese side Porto. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:03
And Arsenal will also be heading through to the next stage | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
of the competition after beating Greek side Olympiakos 3-0. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:11
That's the 16th season in a row that the Gunners have | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
made it to the last 16. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
It is a special night for us, because as we said before the game, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
we are in escape mode, before the game. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:27
And we needed something special, and when you can deliver something | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
special, you can create a positive memory for the rest of the team. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:36
Swansea are looking for a new manager this morning | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
after Garry Monk was sacked yesterday. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
He'd been in charge for just 22 months. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
The club are currently just one point above the relegation zone. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:48
British astronaut Tim Peake blasts off for outer space in just five | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
days, so here at Newsround we're counting down the days with our list | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
of top five facts about the UK's number one space-man. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
Tim Peake had to do a special five-week course learning how | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
to spacewalk in a space suit. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:16
And to another story of a cat but a very grumpy one. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
The famous grumpy cat kitty has been to Madame Tussauds in San Francisco | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
for the uneveiling of her very own lookalike. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
But instead of being made out of wax, she's been made | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
as a mechanical figure that can lift her head and even purr. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
Of course, the real grumpy cat didn't look too impressed by it all. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:41
That's all from me, Newsround's back right here on CBBC this afternoon | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
at 4.20pm with Jenny. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
Head over to the Newsround web site to see sneak peek of what's to watch | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
on TV this Christmas. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53 |
