Good afternoon. I have everything you need to know. Here's what is

:00:10.:00:14.

coming up - the Pope resigns. The first Pope to do so for nearly 600

:00:14.:00:20.

years. And the latest on the horsemeat

:00:20.:00:27.

scandal spreading across Europe. You're watching Newsround.

:00:27.:00:30.

First, after nearly eight years in the job, the Pope has announced

:00:30.:00:36.

today that he is resigning as the leader of the Catholic Church. At

:00:36.:00:39.

85 years old, Pope Benedict XVI said he was no longer strong enough

:00:39.:00:47.

to continue. He is the first Pope to resign in nearly 600 years.

:00:47.:00:51.

It is one of the most important jobs in the world. As the most

:00:52.:00:56.

senior person in the Catholic Church, he guides more than one

:00:56.:01:00.

billion people who follow the faith. Pope Benedict XVI has today

:01:00.:01:05.

resigned and will leave the job at the end of this month. His

:01:05.:01:08.

resignation has come as a complete surprise. This is an extraordinary,

:01:08.:01:14.

historic moment in the modern story of the Catholic Church. Nobody had

:01:14.:01:23.

any hint that this moment was coming. He announced at 85, he is

:01:23.:01:27.

too old to continue and doesn't have the strength to carry out his

:01:27.:01:31.

duties. Stepping down as the Pope is a huge deal. He's the first to

:01:31.:01:39.

do so in almost 600 years. I think people are very upset and saddened.

:01:39.:01:45.

Pope John Paul II, as we know went on through thick and thin. This man

:01:45.:01:50.

is a very different character. He requires a lot of silence, a lot of

:01:50.:01:56.

his own space, where as John Paul thrived en masse sieve crowds.

:01:56.:02:01.

Benedict XVI, whose real name is Joseph Ratzinger, became Pope in

:02:01.:02:05.

2005. At 75 he was one of the oldest to take up the post. Based

:02:06.:02:10.

at the Vatican in Rome, his job has been to lead the Catholic Church.

:02:10.:02:14.

In 2010, he visited the UK. Hundreds of thousands of people

:02:14.:02:18.

turned out to welcome him. In December last year, the Pope joined

:02:18.:02:23.

Twitter, sending messages in eight languages to his millions of

:02:23.:02:26.

followers around the world. The Prime Minister, David Cameron,, has

:02:27.:02:32.

said the Pope will be missed by millions. He will step down on

:02:32.:02:38.

February 28td and -- 28th and the process will begin. There's a food

:02:38.:02:43.

scandal which has spread across Europe. After horsemeat was found

:02:43.:02:47.

in Findus lasagne's last week France and Sweden have joined the

:02:47.:02:54.

UK in withdrawing some meat products from their shelves.

:02:54.:02:57.

What does the scandal tell us about the food we eat, where it comes

:02:57.:03:05.

from and how it gets here? Horsemeat found in burgers sold in

:03:05.:03:10.

British and Irish supermarkets... It has been going off for a month.

:03:10.:03:16.

Since traces of horse DNA were found, things got more serious when

:03:17.:03:22.

some Findus lasagnes sold here were found to contain 100% horsemeat.

:03:22.:03:26.

Our food takes a long and complicated journey through many

:03:26.:03:31.

countries, which explains some reasons why how the food is

:03:31.:03:35.

contaminated. This is what is thought to have happen. Findus is

:03:35.:03:40.

Swedish. The meals were made by a French food supplier, not in France,

:03:40.:03:45.

but in a factory in Luxembourg. The meat was brought from a Cypriot

:03:45.:03:50.

trader. That trader bought frit the Netherlands. It is suspected the

:03:50.:03:53.

meat came from slaughterhouses in Romania. The authoritys there are

:03:53.:03:57.

investigating. There are no plans at the moment to ban imports from

:03:57.:04:01.

the EU, as the Government says there's currently no risk to human

:04:01.:04:06.

health. All the evidence of the products so far is they are safe.

:04:06.:04:11.

They are not as labelled. This is a case of fraud and mis-labelling.

:04:11.:04:15.

There's nothing we have seen so far which represents a health threat.

:04:15.:04:19.

Later today Owen Paterson will update MPs on the latest

:04:19.:04:23.

developments in the scandal spreading across Europe.

:04:23.:04:29.

It has got a lot of you talking F we hear any more about the

:04:29.:04:32.

horsemeat scandal we will let you know later tonight. OK, we will

:04:32.:04:37.

finish with news, the Government wants to make food and nutrition

:04:37.:04:42.

lessons compulsory in schools in England to help improve skills in

:04:42.:04:47.

the kitchen. Do you reckon it is a good idea or do you know enough

:04:47.:04:51.
