Good morning, Ricky here with the incredible tale of the schoolboy

:00:00.:00:00.

the high-speed lawnmowers in a race with a difference,

:00:07.:00:12.

and we meet the kids on the search for bumblebees.

:00:13.:00:19.

Let's start then with the amazing story of the nine-year-old who

:00:20.:00:28.

Around 100 kids each year are born without one or both of their ears,

:00:29.:00:33.

but now doctors in London have come up with a new way to help them.

:00:34.:00:36.

It involves making new ears out of other parts of the body,

:00:37.:00:40.

and schoolboy Kieran is one of those who's had the operation.

:00:41.:00:43.

When Kieran was born, his ear canal hadn't formed,

:00:44.:00:49.

Doctors helped him to hear by wiring a hearing aid directly

:00:50.:00:54.

But Kieran really wanted to have two ears.

:00:55.:01:02.

Every time I look at them, I say in my head, "I want ears

:01:03.:01:10.

Then came a letter from Great Ormond Street Hospital

:01:11.:01:19.

in London, which said he was going to get his wish - new ears.

:01:20.:01:24.

I'm going to keep this part, but they're just going to make

:01:25.:01:27.

I might have, like, big elf ears, or elephant ears!

:01:28.:01:40.

Kieran and his parents went to the famous

:01:41.:01:44.

Children's Hospital, where surgeons explained how the operation worked.

:01:45.:01:48.

So, Kieran, we're going to take the gristle from your chest

:01:49.:01:52.

when you're completely asleep, and I'm going to carve a framework

:01:53.:01:56.

in the shape of an ear and place it in a pocket under the skin.

:01:57.:02:00.

Doctors use the shape of Kieran's mother's ears to help create

:02:01.:02:04.

Kieran was soon taken through for his operation, where surgeons went

:02:05.:02:14.

about carefully making and attaching his brand-new ears to his head.

:02:15.:02:21.

Hey, Kieran, look what I've got, I've got a mirror.

:02:22.:02:24.

You can have a really good look at your ears now.

:02:25.:02:28.

Kieran's dad says the surgery and the wait to get Kieran's new

:02:29.:02:39.

He's already a pretty confident chap,

:02:40.:02:44.

he's very cool about his condition, and this will now mean the only

:02:45.:02:50.

thing he has to deal with is his deafness, and that's already readily

:02:51.:02:55.

Now he can just be a normal kid that wants to muck around.

:02:56.:03:07.

Next to the question of whether it's right to stop prisoners

:03:08.:03:10.

The European Court of Human Rights will decide this morning on

:03:11.:03:15.

whether to award compensation to UK prisoners who've complained about

:03:16.:03:18.

They say their rights were breached when they

:03:19.:03:23.

weren't allowed to take part in European elections five years ago.

:03:24.:03:29.

Next to a science experiment on a massive scale,

:03:30.:03:31.

as children from all over the UK are being asked to spot bumblebees.

:03:32.:03:35.

The Big Bumblebee Project aims to explore why bee populations have

:03:36.:03:38.

You're being asked to identify different species and send

:03:39.:03:46.

I caught up with some of the kids taking part

:03:47.:03:50.

in the study and Dr Helen Roy, who told me why bees are so important.

:03:51.:03:57.

We are taking lots of pictures of them, and then put the picture onto

:03:58.:04:05.

the blog and write a message and send it. All of these bees that we

:04:06.:04:11.

are seeing here, and some hopper flies as well, are really important

:04:12.:04:16.

in pollination, carrying the pollen from one flower to another, and that

:04:17.:04:20.

is important to food production and wild flowers, as well.

:04:21.:04:22.

There's more on this on the Newsround website, and you can

:04:23.:04:25.

see my full report with those guys back here at 8.55 this morning.

:04:26.:04:28.

The Girl Guides have unveiled their brand new uniform today, the first

:04:29.:04:31.

The new range means members will have a choice

:04:32.:04:34.

of tops to wear with trousers, skirts, or shorts, as well as

:04:35.:04:37.

Five young fashion designers spent a year talking to Guides before

:04:38.:04:41.

Sport, and some of Team GB's biggest stars are gearing up for the

:04:42.:04:47.

European Athletics Championships which start this morning.

:04:48.:04:49.

Mo Farah will be going for double gold but has been explaining

:04:50.:04:52.

the full reasons why he missed the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

:04:53.:04:56.

The Olympic champion's revealed he was forced to pull out

:04:57.:04:58.

after collapsing during a pre-Games training run.

:04:59.:05:06.

Because it is so much pain from my stomach, and called an ambulance,

:05:07.:05:12.

the ambulance sent with the hospital, and I had to be airlifted

:05:13.:05:16.

to the main hospital, they thought there was something going on with my

:05:17.:05:21.

heart. It was crazy, I was in hospital for four days. It was scary

:05:22.:05:26.

at the time but, for me, I would love to come back and continue the

:05:27.:05:31.

road to the Commonwealth Games which I ended. I didn't want to disappoint

:05:32.:05:36.

by fans, a lot of people bought tickets, but at the same time I

:05:37.:05:39.

wasn't ready, was nowhere near ready.

:05:40.:05:40.

And finally to a sporting event with a difference ?

:05:41.:05:43.

Over 30 teams battled through the night in the 12-hour endurance race

:05:44.:05:46.

It's a bit different from what you might have seen

:05:47.:05:50.

The winning team managed to complete 366 laps of the circuit.

:05:51.:05:54.

Newsround's back right here at 8.55am.
