This is Newsround and this is the Olympic Park, where over the past | :00:12. | :00:14.
three weeks we have seen drama, excitement, passion, dreams | :00:14. | :00:20.
fulfilled and hopes shattered. For a record third time, London has | :00:20. | :00:24.
hosted the Olympic Games, and boy, was it one to remember. So sit | :00:24. | :00:33.
tight and relive the greatest sporting event you'll ever see. | :00:33. | :00:43.
:00:43. | :00:46. | ||
Great Britain, into the record Chad le Clos is Olympic champion! | :00:46. | :00:51.
That is the greatest Olympian in history. That champion becomes a | :00:51. | :01:01.
:01:01. | :01:11. | ||
legend! The gold medal is Mexico's! Jamaica have the gold medal again | :01:11. | :01:17.
and it is a new world record! you ever seen anything like that?! | :01:17. | :01:20.
London 2012 has been the most successful games for Britain for | :01:20. | :01:26.
100 years. In Beijing, the team climbed to fourth in the medal | :01:26. | :01:29.
table, but over the past couple of weeks, led by the cyclists, Team GB | :01:29. | :01:33.
have an amazing third place, with 29 gold medals. Only beaten by | :01:33. | :01:37.
China and the USA, countries with much bigger populations. | :01:37. | :01:42.
Why have we done so well this time around? Of course, it's down to | :01:43. | :01:49.
really talented athletes trying really hard. But, as Joe's been | :01:49. | :01:52.
finding out, there's one thing that's really allowed the GB team | :01:52. | :01:55.
to concentrate on training and get the best support possible. Money - | :01:55. | :02:02.
and lots of it. The London 2012 Games were amazing | :02:02. | :02:09.
for Team GB. It's hard to believe then that 16 years ago, Britain | :02:09. | :02:18.
only won one gold at the Olympics in Atlanta. Where did this massive | :02:18. | :02:22.
improvement come from? Three words. Cold hard cash. Since 1996, | :02:22. | :02:25.
millions and millions of pounds have been poured into sport to get | :02:25. | :02:29.
our athletes competing with, and beating, the best in the world. | :02:29. | :02:33.
Lots of the money came from the National Lottery. It worked too | :02:33. | :02:37.
because at the next Games in Sydney, Great Britain won 11 golds, the | :02:37. | :02:45.
most for 80 years. And then this happened. The City of London. | :02:45. | :02:49.
it was decided seven years ago that London would host the Games, the | :02:49. | :02:55.
money invested went through the roof. Over half a billion pounds | :02:55. | :02:57.
was pumped into helping our competitors win at both the Beijing | :02:57. | :03:02.
Olympics in 2008 and these Games in London. But the money wasn't just | :03:02. | :03:09.
given to any sport. Events and athletes that could do well were | :03:09. | :03:12.
picked out, and cash was spent on top quality facilities, performance | :03:12. | :03:18.
scientists and the very best coaches. That meant that athletes | :03:18. | :03:22.
like the cyclists were able to train in places like this, the | :03:22. | :03:28.
Manchester Velodrome. The cycling centre where Chris Foy and Victoria | :03:28. | :03:31.
Pendleton were given the best sports scientists and coaches in | :03:31. | :03:35.
the business to allow them to concentrate on their training and | :03:35. | :03:38.
win gold. The pressure is now on to keep the | :03:38. | :03:42.
medals coming in the future. But the question is, can Great Britain | :03:42. | :03:46.
continue its success into the next Olympics in Rio and beyond? Now we | :03:46. | :03:50.
need to make sure that we increase the amount of clubs have edible for | :03:50. | :04:00.
people to take up the sport, because if they take -- take it up, | :04:00. | :04:04.
there will be future champions, so we have to filter this right down | :04:04. | :04:09.
to the chain, go to the grassroots communities and clubs and then keep | :04:09. | :04:13.
them sustained. Then we will have a huge legacy after the Games. | :04:13. | :04:16.
Apart from the success of the British team, what's the verdict on | :04:16. | :04:24.
London 2012? Pretty good. These Games were designed to be different | :04:24. | :04:26.
from what had gone before. Temporary venues, recycling and | :04:26. | :04:29.
giant, enthusiastic crowds have set the London games apart. | :04:29. | :04:32.
It was clear from the opening ceremony, these Olympics Games were | :04:32. | :04:36.
going to be different. People around the world agreed the opening | :04:36. | :04:41.
ceremony was stylish, surprising, and very, very British. The plan | :04:41. | :04:47.
was to host the most environmentally friendly Games ever. | :04:47. | :04:50.
The park was designed with local wildlife in mind, with homes for | :04:50. | :04:54.
birds, otters and insects all built-in. London was the first | :04:54. | :04:58.
Games to recycle rubbish rather than putting it into landfill. And | :04:58. | :05:03.
rubbish isn't the only thing being reused. The hockey, basketball and | :05:03. | :05:06.
water polo arenas will all be dismantled, their parts recycled | :05:06. | :05:15.
elsewhere. Another thing that set London apart were the crowds. A | :05:15. | :05:20.
record-breaking 7.4 million people visited Olympic venues across the | :05:20. | :05:25.
UK during the Olympic Games. Early problems with empty seats were | :05:25. | :05:28.
sorted and by the time the athletics started, the stadium was | :05:28. | :05:32.
packed. The Olympic flame has now been put out and the petals of the | :05:32. | :05:35.
cauldron taken back by each of the 206 competing countries. Next stop | :05:35. | :05:40.
- Rio. No pressure, guys. Most people are agreed that these | :05:40. | :05:45.
Olympics have done Britain proud. From the cheerful volunteers, to | :05:45. | :05:48.
the huge and vocal crowds and of course, the amazing performances | :05:48. | :05:52.
and record medal haul of the British team. Rio will have a lot | :05:52. | :05:56.
to live up to in 2016. I'll leave you with some of the British team's | :05:56. | :06:06.
