0:02:060:02:09

be sure of one thing,

Newsround will be there

0:02:090:02:11

to bring you all the gossip.

0:02:110:02:17

From the winners at the Brits 2018.

0:02:170:02:22

Now, how clean is the

air we're breathing?

0:02:220:02:24

Research by the World Health

Organisation last year said

0:02:240:02:26

the quality of the air in more

than 44 UK cities

0:02:260:02:29

wasn't good enough.

0:02:290:02:30

One girl is so worried she's decided

to do something about it.

0:02:300:02:33

Whitney's been to meet her?

0:02:330:02:34

Air pollution isn't

always easy to see.

0:02:340:02:37

It's caused by burning fossil fuels

- things like coal and oil

0:02:370:02:40

that we used to make heat,

electricity and to fuel

0:02:400:02:42

cars and lorries.

0:02:420:02:50

Hadil goes to a school in a part

of London with one of the highest

0:02:580:03:01

levels of air pollution

in the country.

0:03:010:03:03

This road is really busy

with trucks, vans, cars,

0:03:030:03:05

buses, you name it.

0:03:050:03:06

Using this special camera,

we can see some of the harmful

0:03:060:03:09

gases in the air.

0:03:090:03:10

Look as it drives off, and look

at the cars next to it as well.

0:03:100:03:13

And when you put it

in normal mode...

0:03:130:03:15

Nothing.

0:03:150:03:16

You can't see anything.

0:03:160:03:17

But what are we actually looking at?

0:03:170:03:19

This lab measures air quality

from all over the UK.

0:03:190:03:22

Hi, David, we've been looking

at the exhausts of cars.

0:03:220:03:24

Can you tell us what this means

and is it really harmful?

0:03:240:03:27

Well, I can see here that you've got

pollution coming out

0:03:270:03:29

of the exhausts of vehicles.

0:03:290:03:33

That is mainly going to be nitrogen

dioxide and very small particles,

0:03:330:03:35

both of which can be damaging

to your health.

0:03:350:03:38

It's not a worry for most

of us who are healthy

0:03:380:03:40

but if you have an existing problem

with your breathing,

0:03:400:03:43

like many old people do,

or if you have asthma,

0:03:430:03:45

then both of those things can be

affected by air pollution.

0:03:450:03:49

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,

says the problem is unacceptable,

0:03:490:03:54

and has promised to help get

pollution levels down

0:03:540:03:56

to the World Health Organisation

standards by 2030.

0:03:560:04:00

But Hadil once more

done, more quickly.

0:04:000:04:01

I'm writing this letter

to the London mayor, Sadiq Khan.

0:04:010:04:09

To tell him how unhappy I am

about the air pollution in London.

0:04:120:04:15

I wrote two proposals.

0:04:150:04:16

The first one is to see more

electric cars on the road

0:04:160:04:19

and the second one is to get

factories to stop using

0:04:190:04:22

harmful chemicals.

0:04:220:04:23

She's sending it to City Hall

where the Mayor of London works.

0:04:230:04:26

Newsround contacted Sadiq Khan

about Hadil's concerns,

0:04:260:04:27

and his office told us

that the mayor is...

0:04:270:04:30

Creating 12 low emission bus zones,

phasing out diesel taxis,

0:04:340:04:37

checking the quality of air around

schools and alerting people

0:04:370:04:39

when air quality falls

below a certain standard.

0:04:390:04:46

They say the mayor now once

the government to introduce

0:04:460:04:48

a special fund to help people

replace high emission vehicles.

0:04:480:04:54

The government has promised to give

£3.5 billion to help

0:04:540:04:57

improve air quality.

0:04:570:05:03

It plans to end the sale of diesel

and petrol cars and vans by the end

0:05:030:05:06

of 2040 and is publishing a clean

air strategy, setting out further

0:05:060:05:09

steps to tackle air pollution.

0:05:090:05:12

Finally, have you ever

stopped to wonder how

0:05:120:05:14

extraordinary your lunch is?

0:05:140:05:17

French President

Emmanuel Macron has.

0:05:170:05:20

He wants the French baguette to be

named a UNESCO cultural treasure.

0:05:200:05:24

It's a list of crafts and practices

from around the world that

0:05:240:05:27

are special or unique.

0:05:270:05:30

According to the president,

the baguette is the envy

0:05:300:05:33

of the world and its ingredients

and the way it's made

0:05:330:05:36

should be protected.

0:05:360:05:38

If you fancy some spread

to have with that baguette,

0:05:380:05:41

head over to Newsround online

to for your freaky news fix with our

0:05:410:05:45

Strange Stranger Strangest round-up,

including this sculpture made

0:05:450:05:47

entirely from butter.

0:05:470:05:52

That's your lot for today.

0:05:520:05:53

Newsround's back in the morning.

0:05:530:05:54

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
