Hi guys, Leah here with your afternoon Newsround. Loads on the | :00:00. | :00:06.
way for you, including the wildlife expert who says trying to save these | :00:07. | :00:12.
guys could be a waste of money. And should you give out birthday | :00:13. | :00:15.
invitations at school when not everyone's invited.? | :00:16. | :00:23.
There are thousands of endangered animals in the world and lots of | :00:24. | :00:27.
different charities trying to raise money to save them, but how do you | :00:28. | :00:32.
decide which animals to save? Autumnwatch presenter Chris Packham | :00:33. | :00:35.
has told Newsround that he thinks we are spending | :00:36. | :00:39.
the cute and most popular animals. Here's Martin with the story. | :00:40. | :00:44.
When you think about endangered species you might think of popular | :00:45. | :00:47.
animals like elephants, tigers or pandas. The panda is one of the most | :00:48. | :00:53.
high profile animals under threat, it is even the symbol of the World | :00:54. | :00:59.
Wildlife Fund for Nature. There are fewer than 2000 pandas left in the | :01:00. | :01:03.
wild but some people say efforts to save them are a waste of money. | :01:04. | :01:08.
Autumn watch presenter Chris Packham says a quarter of mammals and 1 % of | :01:09. | :01:12.
birds are under threat, so instead of looking after the cuter creatures | :01:13. | :01:15.
we should be focussing on protecting habitats for all wildlife. What we | :01:16. | :01:25.
really need to do is not pick and choose which ones we are trying to | :01:26. | :01:30.
save. We need to try and motivate politicians to understand that | :01:31. | :01:32.
looking after all life is really important. There have been lots of | :01:33. | :01:35.
attempts to boost panda numbers through breeding programmes in zoos. | :01:36. | :01:38.
Recently, they've been trying to get Tian Tian to breed at Edinburgh Zoo | :01:39. | :01:46.
with no success yet. When it comes to pandas we have spent millions and | :01:47. | :01:49.
millions of dollars trying to make these animals breed in captivity. | :01:50. | :01:53.
They have only successfully done this really in China. When they try | :01:54. | :01:57.
to release the animal back into the wild, none have survived. Perhaps | :01:58. | :02:01.
putting so much energy into breeding these animals might be a waste of | :02:02. | :02:05.
money. I'm not saying I do not like the Pandora that we should not try, | :02:06. | :02:11.
just that it is too difficult. Not everyone agrees with what Chris has | :02:12. | :02:15.
to say. The World Wildlife Fund says protecting a famous animal like the | :02:16. | :02:18.
panda is a good way of getting people interested in saving other | :02:19. | :02:21.
creatures. And they along with many other wildlife charities are still | :02:22. | :02:25.
doing what they can to save them. To India now, where thousands of | :02:26. | :02:28.
families are returning to their homes after a huge cyclone swept | :02:29. | :02:31.
across the east of the country. 18 people were killed when Cyclone | :02:32. | :02:34.
Phailin struck the state of Orissa on Saturday. Winds of up to 125 | :02:35. | :02:43.
miles an hour flattened many coastal homes, uprooted trees and blocked | :02:44. | :02:46.
roads. Indian authorities say the evacuation of nearly one million | :02:47. | :02:48.
people into temporary shelters has helped save many people's lives Now | :02:49. | :02:53.
the clean up begins after the worst cyclone there for 14 years. | :02:54. | :03:03.
Power is gradually being restored and links are being rebuilt. Many | :03:04. | :03:12.
people are from her communities along the coast, many of whom have | :03:13. | :03:15.
lost their homes. Focus is to rebuild their lives. | :03:16. | :03:17.
Yesterday we told you about a head-teacher in Bath who asked | :03:18. | :03:20.
parents to avoid bringing party invites into school that didn't | :03:21. | :03:23.
include all children in the class. It got you sending LOADS of opinions | :03:24. | :03:28.
into our website. Newsround spoke to the head today, who told us it was | :03:29. | :03:32.
unkind to leave some children out. He said he wanted the school to make | :03:33. | :03:37.
every child feel included. Nel went to find out whether you guys agreed | :03:38. | :03:43.
with him. Birthday parties - it can be quite | :03:44. | :03:48.
upsetting if your name is not on the invite list. Should you have to | :03:49. | :03:53.
invite everybody? And if not, isn't it a bad idea to hand them out at | :03:54. | :03:58.
school? I have come to a school to find out what people think. I think | :03:59. | :04:03.
they should give them out at home time. If they were handed out in | :04:04. | :04:07.
school and you did not get invited you might get upset. I think there | :04:08. | :04:15.
should be given out in class because you can have as many as you want. | :04:16. | :04:19.
They should be handed out at home. When I did not get one I felt really | :04:20. | :04:25.
sad. The only person that could cheer me up was my friends and my | :04:26. | :04:30.
family. Me and my family do not celebrate birthdays and I am not | :04:31. | :04:35.
worried about invitations and all. It's hard to image life without our | :04:36. | :04:39.
mobiles but spare a thought for people living in a village in Mexico | :04:40. | :04:41.
They're just decades villagers delivered | :04:42. | :04:48.
important messages by loud speaker because telecoms companies said they | :04:49. | :04:56.
could not justify a network. I will be back at 6:50pm. Join me | :04:57. | :05:00.
then. Goodbye. | :05:01. | :05:01. |
