Hi there, news fans. We have a show bursting at the seams coming your | :00:17. | :00:25.
way. That is how I feel after my steak and mushroom pie. Sonali and | :00:25. | :00:29.
Ore with you tonight with Newsround. Here are just a couple of things we | :00:29. | :00:34.
have in store for you. We are searching for wildlife after the | :00:34. | :00:38.
devastating fires in Dorset. the boat launch that blew everyone | :00:38. | :00:43.
away! First up, we're talking horseracing. | :00:43. | :00:46.
The world-famous Royal Ascot races are on this week - which means | :00:46. | :00:50.
300,000 people getting all dressed up to for a day or two of fun at | :00:50. | :00:56.
the races. But there's a serious side to it all too. The people who | :00:56. | :00:59.
run racing have started a big debate about whether jockeys should | :00:59. | :01:05.
be allowed to whip horses to make them go faster. | :01:05. | :01:08.
This was Ballabriggs charging to victory in one of the most famous | :01:09. | :01:11.
races in the world, The Grand National, back in April. If you | :01:12. | :01:15.
look closely, you can see the rider using his whip to spur the horse on. | :01:15. | :01:18.
After the race, officials told jockey Jason Maguire he'd used the | :01:18. | :01:21.
whip too much. He stayed champion, but he was fined and banned from | :01:21. | :01:26.
riding for five days. Racing rules say that riders can | :01:26. | :01:30.
use whips to steer a horse out of danger or to encourage them to go | :01:30. | :01:33.
faster. Lots of racing fans think this is fair, but some people | :01:33. | :01:37.
reckon using a whip to make a horse run is wrong. And they're choosing | :01:37. | :01:42.
to stay away from racing. believe a large proportion of | :01:42. | :01:46.
people are not coming because of their view that the use of the whip | :01:46. | :01:48.
is cruel. People at Towcester racecourse in Northamptonshire were | :01:49. | :01:58.
:01:59. | :01:59. | ||
asked what they thought. No, it doesn't bother me. If they are good | :01:59. | :02:02.
enough, they don't need a whipping. The don't with the horses, that is | :02:02. | :02:06.
mean. The British Horse Racing Authority, which makes the rules of | :02:06. | :02:09.
the sport, says that whips are designed with padded tops so they | :02:09. | :02:12.
don't hurt the horses and insists that in some cases, they have to be | :02:12. | :02:15.
used to keep the animals safe during races. But they are now | :02:15. | :02:18.
looking at how whips should be used and deciding whether jockeys who | :02:18. | :02:23.
abuse the whip should face bigger punishments. | :02:23. | :02:26.
It looks like some of you could be getting an extra day off school at | :02:26. | :02:30.
the end of the month. Some teachers in England and Wales say they won't | :02:30. | :02:35.
be working on Thursday 30th June because they're going on strike. | :02:35. | :02:37.
They're upset at changes the government wants to make to their | :02:38. | :02:40.
pensions - that's the money they get when they retire. Teachers | :02:40. | :02:43.
unions reckon they'll be worse off, but politicians say walking out is | :02:43. | :02:48.
wrong because it affects your education. Talks are going on to | :02:48. | :02:58.
:02:58. | :02:58. | ||
try to stop the strike happening. Thousands of kids across the UK | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:11. | ||
tried to break a world record today. They were trying to break the | :03:12. | :03:15.
record for the biggest walking bus. There was a serious message behind | :03:15. | :03:18.
it all. They want cars to slow down outside their schools. More than | :03:18. | :03:22.
1,000 kids are hurt on roads every year - something these guys want to | :03:22. | :03:26.
change. Drivers are reaching their limits with speed and they cannot | :03:26. | :03:30.
see the children who are crossing. They parkin illegal places, like | :03:30. | :03:36.
the zig-zag lines and they go across the speed limit. If you go | :03:36. | :03:40.
too fast and you don't look, they could come very fast and not notice | :03:40. | :03:46.
you. People need to note that you have to slowdown near schools, | :03:47. | :03:50.
because it is a look -- public place and there are lots of little | :03:50. | :03:55.
children. People have to look because they might run someone over | :03:55. | :04:00.
if they are going too fast. Last week, we told you about one of the | :04:00. | :04:04.
biggest heath fires to hit Dorset. The area is home to a wide range of | :04:04. | :04:07.
wildlife, so the blaze ended up killing thousands of animals and | :04:07. | :04:10.
destroying their natural habitat. Now the race is on to help save the | :04:10. | :04:13.
ones that survived. Ricky's spent the day at the scene of the fire to | :04:13. | :04:17.
find out more. A wall of fire sweeps across the | :04:17. | :04:20.
Upton Heath nature reserve, burning everything in its path. Hundreds of | :04:20. | :04:22.
firefighters battled to stop the flames from reaching nearby homes. | :04:22. | :04:26.
But it was too late for the animals who live right here. The sheer | :04:26. | :04:36.
scale of the fires shocked everyone. I saw flames start in there, and | :04:36. | :04:45.
five minutes later they had stretched to that stop over there. | :04:45. | :04:48.
That's because this is one of most important wildlife sites in England. | :04:48. | :04:53.
And a third of it has been devastated by the fires. You can | :04:53. | :04:57.
still smell burning and the ground is black. They came at a critical | :04:57. | :05:00.
time for wildlife as birds were nesting and reptiles breeding. The | :05:00. | :05:03.
Dorset Wildlife Trust have asked volunteers to come forward and help | :05:03. | :05:13.
:05:13. | :05:16. | ||
rescue the animals. How devastating has the fire been to the wildlife | :05:16. | :05:21.
here? It has gone back 20 years. Thousands of animals have died, and | :05:21. | :05:26.
since then a lot of the Habitat has gone, the trees and bushes, they | :05:26. | :05:32.
have disappeared. Now it is time to release the reptiles which have | :05:33. | :05:36.
been found so far. Hundreds of volunteers turned up to help with | :05:36. | :05:39.
the search, and they are expecting even more people over the next | :05:39. | :05:44.
couple of days. We will be out here every day trying to find stuff. | :05:44. | :05:49.
will take a while to grow back, so we will do what we can and move | :05:49. | :05:54.
them back. This little Sand Lizard is back on safe land about to start | :05:54. | :05:57.
a new life. Volunteers are hoping to rescue even more over the next | :05:57. | :06:07.
Now if you're showing off a brand new racing boat to the world's | :06:07. | :06:10.
media, you'd probably want to focus on how fast it is, how cool it | :06:10. | :06:13.
looks. And this one in San Francisco certainly did make a big | :06:13. | :06:17.
splash, just not for the right reason. After just a few minutes in | :06:17. | :06:19.
the water, one crew in one of yachting's biggest racing events, | :06:19. | :06:22.
the America's Cup, had a bit of a disaster when their catarmaran | :06:22. | :06:30.
capsized. None of the crew were hurt, just a bit embarrassed. | :06:30. | :06:35.
It won't be the last capsize, and it won't be the first. That is | :06:35. | :06:39.
always going to be part of this game and, frankly, we should have | :06:39. | :06:44.
avoided it. It is a mistake, and if you make a mistake, you pay the | :06:44. | :06:47.
price. Talking of boats, check out this one made from plastic milk | :06:47. | :06:50.
bottle tops! A man from Cambridgeshire took three years to | :06:50. | :06:56.
collect the 10,000 lids he needed. A lot of melting and moulding in | :06:56. | :07:00.
his back garden later, he had had a boat fit for a charity row down the | :07:00. | :07:06.
River Cam. And he did not capsize. Nice | :07:06. | :07:11.
technique. British ladybirds are being wiped | :07:11. | :07:14.
out by an invasion of a foreign rival. That's what wildlife experts | :07:14. | :07:17.
told us today. The numbers of about ten types of ladybirds have been | :07:17. | :07:21.
going down over the past 20 years. They include the ones you might see | :07:21. | :07:24.
in your garden, with ten or 14 spots on them. Scientists reckon | :07:24. | :07:27.
it's down to the Asian Harlequin ladybird, which compete for their | :07:27. | :07:37.
:07:37. | :07:38. | ||
food and sometimes even eat British Before we go, we want your opinion. | :07:38. | :07:41.
We've heard that one in six primary school kids are put into different | :07:41. | :07:44.
sets depending on how well you learn. We want to know what you | :07:44. | :07:48.
think about this. Does it happen at your school? Are you in a high | :07:48. | :07:52. |
