Morning, Ricky here
with your Newsround udpate. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
We're waking up to some great
news from PyeongChang. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:22
Our first medal! | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
Dom Parsons scooped bronze
in the skeleton bob in the early | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
hours of this morning. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
Here's how. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:33
This is the moment Dom Parsons won
a dramatic bronze medal | 0:00:33 | 0:00:39
in the men's skeleton
at the Olympic Sliding | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
Centre in Pyeongchang. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Yep, this is Great Britain's
first in the games. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:51
Starting his final run in third
place, Dom thought he had blown it, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
and lost out on a chance to pick up
a medal, when he slipped behind | 0:00:54 | 0:00:59
Russia's Nikita Tregubov
with two races still to go. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
But Latvian Martins Dukurs lost time
on the lower part of the course | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
to hand Parsons a bronze with just
0.11 seconds on it. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
That's close! | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
COMMENTATOR: He has his medal! | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
Come on, Great Britain! | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
I thought I'd lost it,
after that second round. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Well, fourth round. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
Your heart sank? | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
I looked up at the time,
I made a couple too many | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
mistakes in that run. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
But Martins made some more mistakes,
and he's the last person I thought | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
would make those mistakes. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:33
This is Great Britain's first medal
in the men's skeleton since 1948. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:41
Sad news from America next,
where tributes have been | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
being paid after a serious gun
attack on Wednesday. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
It happened in a school in Florida. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Attacks like these don't tend
to happen in other countries, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
like the UK, so it's got some people
asking why America's attitude | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
to guns is different. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
In America, it's not unusual
for people to own a gun. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:07
Many Americans see owning
one as an important | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
part of who they are. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
That's because when the USA
was founded, the right to buy | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
and carry a gun was written
into the constitution. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
That's a list of basic rules that
a country is based on. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
But Americans disagree about
what this rule should mean today. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
Some people think that it means
there should be no controls, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
and that people should be able
to buy and carry whatever gun | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
they want whenever they want. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
But others think there should be
controls on what type of gun you can | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
own, and want the most powerful guns
to be banned. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
And now there's been another
gun attack, and sadly | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
17 people have died. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
The attack took place in the city
of Parkland in the state | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
of Florida here in the US. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
And shortly after the attack,
police were able to capture | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
and arrest the man they believe
was behind the shooting. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
It's the sixth school shooting
in the US this year alone, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
and it has people once again asking
what can be done to deal with gun | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
violence here in the US? | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
For every 100 people
in the United States, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
there are 90 guns, and to put that
into perspective, in England | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
and Wales, for every 100 people,
there are just six guns. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:18
Attacks like this one don't tend
to happen here in the UK, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
where the rules are tougher. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
In the US, there's no sign that
they'll be able to agree | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
on what to do about it. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Head to Newsround online,
where you can find advice | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
about what to do if anything
in the news upsets you. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:38
Next, he's usually found
hanging around the world's | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
deadliest animals -
but now Steve Backshall | 0:03:40 | 0:03:41
has a new challenge. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
He's going to attempt
to climb the north face | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
of Mount Eiger in Switzerland -
also known as the wall of death. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
Hayley caught up with him to find
out how he's been preparing... | 0:03:49 | 0:03:56
I've been training for five months
and doing a lot of stuff to build up | 0:03:56 | 0:04:01
my strength to body weight, I've
been losing weight, I've been on a | 0:04:01 | 0:04:07
diet for five months. Over
Christmas? Tell me about it but I | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
kind of feel ready. I know you've
dealt with scary situations and | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
animals. On a scale of one up to
ten, how scary is this? Probably a | 0:04:16 | 0:04:23
ten! Coming from you, that is scary. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
Next, happy new year! | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
No, I'm not late. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:31
It's Chinese New year and Ayshah's
got all you need to know. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
Xin nian kuai le! | 0:04:34 | 0:04:35
Or, Happy Chinese New Year. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:41
Now, you may be thinking,
hang on a minute. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
We've already had New Year. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
But Chinese New Year is a bit
different to the one | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
we celebrate on January the 1st. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
In China, they use a traditional
calendar, which follows | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
the movements of the moon. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
And Chinese New Year celebrates
the start of a new moon. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
Each year is represented
by one of 12 animals | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
from the Chinese zodiac. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
And every 12 years, this loops back
around and starts again. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
This year is the year of the dog. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
But what are the qualities
of a person who was born | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
in the year of the dog? | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
Well, dog people are considered
to be kind, loyal and honest. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
However, they are also
thought to be stubborn, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
easy to anger and fussy. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:22
Famous people who were born
in the year of the dog include | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
Madonna, Justin Bieber and Donald
Trump. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
So if you're celebrating this
year, gong xi fa cai. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:36
Colourful light shows in China have
lit up with Lambert and displays and | 0:05:39 | 0:05:48
firework shows. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53
That's all for now. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
