Hello guys. You are live with Newsround on BBC1. We have a packed | :00:12. | :00:15.
show coming up, stay tuned for some of this: | :00:15. | :00:18.
Millions of people vote on their favourite TV shows so why are fewer | :00:18. | :00:26.
people turning out at elections? Pudsey is in action in a few hours. | :00:26. | :00:31.
We look at what's in store. And, join me to find out who will | :00:31. | :00:41.
:00:41. | :00:50. | ||
be singing the secret song for First, it's been described as one | :00:50. | :00:52.
of the lowest election turnouts ever. Yesterday millions of people | :00:52. | :00:55.
were given the opportunity to make changes to the way their | :00:55. | :00:59.
neighbourhoods are policed. All they had to do was vote. But hardly | :00:59. | :01:07.
anyone did. Today it was my mission to find out why. | :01:07. | :01:10.
Yesterday, people in England and Wales got the chance to vote for | :01:10. | :01:13.
something new - Police Commissioners who will be in charge | :01:13. | :01:17.
of targeting crime in their local area. But around one in ten people | :01:17. | :01:20.
actually voted. At one polling station in Newport in South Wales | :01:20. | :01:25.
no one turned up at all. Skraoeupl an issue a lot of people care about | :01:25. | :01:29.
so how come eligible voters weren't rushing to the polling stations? | :01:29. | :01:32.
didn't have information about who to vote for. I had the card throw | :01:32. | :01:36.
the door but that was it. I didn't bother. I have not had information | :01:36. | :01:40.
so I couldn't make an informed decision. It's been a shambles. | :01:40. | :01:44.
wasn't just the police elections, some areas were also voting for MPs | :01:44. | :01:47.
and turnout there was low, too. Yesterday's elections were | :01:47. | :01:50.
different from a general election, which attracts a much bigger number | :01:50. | :01:54.
of voters. But even when it comes to picking the Prime Minister, not | :01:54. | :01:57.
everyone takes part. For a long time only rich men were able to | :01:57. | :02:01.
vote in this country. Having the right to vote is something people | :02:01. | :02:05.
have fought long and hard for. Women weren't allowed to vote 100 | :02:05. | :02:08.
years ago. Some of them campaigned by starving themselves and even | :02:08. | :02:13.
dying to try to get their voices heard. Here we are in 2012 with | :02:13. | :02:16.
more people able to vote than ever before, so why are fewer people | :02:16. | :02:21.
doing it? In 1950 nearly 84% of people who could vote in the UK put | :02:21. | :02:26.
their cross on a card. In the last general election, in 2010, the | :02:26. | :02:30.
turnout was 65%. It could be that people don't realise how important | :02:30. | :02:34.
it is to vote and how people might not realise how much their vote | :02:34. | :02:38.
counts. People aren't engaged as much with voting and what's | :02:38. | :02:41.
happened and what we want to do is let people know how important it is | :02:41. | :02:46.
they are engaged, making sure they have a say. It's a lot different in | :02:46. | :02:48.
countries like Australia and Argentina, where people are made to | :02:48. | :02:52.
vote by law. If they don't, they get fined. | :02:52. | :02:56.
Millions of people pick up the phoner week -- every week to vote | :02:56. | :03:00.
in Strictly or I'm A Celebrity. When it comes to electing | :03:00. | :03:08.
politicians for many people it doesn't have the X Factor. | :03:08. | :03:11.
Moving on to some other news now and the world's largest marine | :03:11. | :03:13.
reserve has opened in Australia. More than two million square | :03:13. | :03:16.
kilometres of oceans around the country are included in the reserve. | :03:16. | :03:19.
The marine life will be protected from overfishing and people won't | :03:19. | :03:22.
be able to drill for oil and gas in the area. | :03:22. | :03:26.
Now there are less than three hours to go until Children in Need. All | :03:26. | :03:29.
over the country people have been raising money. At Newsround's old | :03:29. | :03:31.
home - at Television Centre in London - everyone's getting ready | :03:31. | :03:35.
for tonight's big show. Girls Aloud will be singing the official single | :03:35. | :03:43.
'Something New'. But they're not the only ones getting involved. # I | :03:43. | :03:49.
like to move it, move it. # I like to move it, you like to, | :03:49. | :03:52.
move it! # Pudsey Bear meets Pudsey dog from | :03:52. | :03:54.
Britain's Got Talent for a dance- off. | :03:54. | :03:56.
And, Britain's Olympic and Paralympic stars, incuding Andy | :03:56. | :03:59.
Murray, Victoria Pendleton, Louis Smith and Ellie Simmonds show off | :03:59. | :04:08.
their moves with their own music video. One of the biggest moments | :04:08. | :04:13.
of the night will be the Children's Choir. More than 2,500 kids will be | :04:13. | :04:18.
joining in to sing one song live on air. We sent Hayley to Blackpool to | :04:18. | :04:28.
:04:28. | :04:34. | ||
meet some of the singers getting in tune. | :04:34. | :04:38.
As you can see, these guys are in the last-minute rehearsals for | :04:38. | :04:41.
their national Children in Need choir performance which will be | :04:42. | :04:46.
tonight. They are sounding pretty good but I wonder how nerves are | :04:46. | :04:50.
holding up. I am really excited for tonight being on TV and singing | :04:50. | :04:55.
with all the other schools. I am feeling really excited. And really | :04:55. | :05:01.
giddy. What song are you singing? can't tell you. You can, go on. | :05:01. | :05:06.
can't tell you! I won't tell anyone. I can't tell you. It's top secret. | :05:06. | :05:10.
These guys weren't r aren't alone, they're singing 2,500 other | :05:10. | :05:14.
children from across the UK. We are off to the BBC studios now where | :05:14. | :05:18.
the cameras are waiting and these guys are still at it! | :05:18. | :05:23.
# When you see what you are... Last year, 46 million was raised. | :05:23. | :05:27.
The money doesn't just go to one children's charity, but loads of | :05:27. | :05:30.
different ones all over the country. But why did these guys want to | :05:30. | :05:35.
help? To help people less fortunate than myself. Children in Need is sa | :05:35. | :05:39.
great way to help raise money and help the sick to make them better. | :05:39. | :05:47.
Tonight's show will take place in the philharmonic Concert Hall in | :05:47. | :05:50.
Salford. You are going to have to tune in later to find out what song | :05:50. | :05:57.
they're singing. As long as it's not Gangnam Style! | :05:57. | :06:00.
Loads of you are getting involved and have been telling us about it | :06:00. | :06:10.
:06:10. | :06:33. | ||
In Wales 2 out of 5 children speak Welsh and this month marks a | :06:33. | :06:37.
special moment in the history of the language. It's 30 years since | :06:37. | :06:41.
the TV channel S4C was created especially for Welsh speakers. | :06:41. | :06:50.
Hayley's back finding out how it started. From kids programmes, to | :06:50. | :06:55.
news, dramas and documentaries, S4C broadcast completely in Welsh. | :06:55. | :07:02.
There is even a Welsh version of Newsround. | :07:02. | :07:07.
S4C began broadcasting from here in Cardiff on 1st November 1982. It | :07:07. | :07:12.
was a massive moment for the Welsh language. Tpwu came after a long | :07:12. | :07:17.
and sometimes bitter campaign. Back in 1980 the newly elected | :07:17. | :07:20.
Conservative Government broke a promise they had made to start a | :07:20. | :07:27.
Welsh language channel. It sparked protests throughout Wales. This man | :07:27. | :07:30.
threatened to starve himself to death if the channel wasn't created. | :07:30. | :07:35.
All this forced the Government to change their minds and finally S4C | :07:35. | :07:41.
was born. Fast forward to 2012 and the channel celebrates its 30th | :07:41. | :07:45.
birthday. It's been a tough time for it recently with cuts to | :07:45. | :07:49.
funding, and fewer people tuning in. All this has led them to think | :07:49. | :07:52.
about a controversial plan to have more English voiceovers for | :07:52. | :07:56.
programmes. Everything on air is Welsh. We have to admit there are | :07:56. | :08:00.
people out there who would like to watch S4C but they're learning | :08:00. | :08:04.
Welsh or can't speak Welsh so it's a way of getting the family to | :08:05. | :08:08.
watch together, possibly. This is one of hundreds of Welsh language | :08:08. | :08:11.
schools in Wales where all the lessons are taught in Welsh. But | :08:11. | :08:15.
what do the guys here think about S4C's plans? It's a good plan for | :08:15. | :08:20.
people that don't speak Welsh. think voiceovers might be too | :08:20. | :08:23.
extreme. It might end up turning the channel into an everyday | :08:23. | :08:28.
English channel. Whether it's an English or Welsh, there's one thing | :08:28. | :08:35.
left to say: Nice one, Hayley! | :08:35. | :08:38.
Finally, if you are wondering what to do over the weekend we have the | :08:38. | :08:43.
answer. We do, go to the website and check out strange, stranger and | :08:43. | :08:47.
strangest of the weirdest clips from the week! It's a good match. | :08:47. | :08:51. |
