Backbreaking Work Hi, guys, Ayshah here with news on the shrinking size | :00:00. | :00:08.
of chocolate on the way. Plus, how these Peruvian pooches are preparing | :00:09. | :00:15.
for Christmas. Keep watching. First, it's something which isn't | :00:16. | :00:18.
often reported on, but the Government says it's a growing | :00:19. | :00:21.
global problem that needs to be tackled. When people are forced to | :00:22. | :00:25.
work against their will, it's called modern slavery. Here's Nel with more | :00:26. | :00:30.
on what it is and the people it affects. | :00:31. | :00:33.
When you mention the word slavery, you probably think about the images | :00:34. | :00:37.
we learn about in school. African men and women shipped to places like | :00:38. | :00:40.
the West Indies and America during the 19th century, then sold and | :00:41. | :00:44.
forced into back-breaking work. But even though that kind of slavery was | :00:45. | :00:48.
officially abolished in the British Empire back in 1833, what you might | :00:49. | :00:52.
not know is people are still being forced to work against their will | :00:53. | :00:57.
right here in the UK. It's very different from what went on back | :00:58. | :01:00.
then, and is known as modern slavery, but the Government are so | :01:01. | :01:03.
concerned about it that they are going to give tougher punishments | :01:04. | :01:13.
for those behind it. Ben, what is modern-day slavery? Whether it is in | :01:14. | :01:17.
factories, nail bars, car washes, they are forced to work long hours. | :01:18. | :01:21.
Some of the people we have helped have worked 20 hours per day seven | :01:22. | :01:25.
days a week and received no payment. Men, women and children who | :01:26. | :01:30.
are forced into becoming modern slaves in the UK come from all over | :01:31. | :01:35.
the world, such as who are parts of Eastern Europe, Africa and Southeast | :01:36. | :01:39.
Asia. Why don't they run away? These people are scared of the police, | :01:40. | :01:43.
scared that if they leave, they will be beaten, scared that their family | :01:44. | :01:49.
will be heard. Because the crime is carried out in secret, it's hard for | :01:50. | :01:52.
the authorities to know how many people are affected. But under the | :01:53. | :01:55.
new rules, the Government say criminals involved could now face a | :01:56. | :01:59.
life sentence in prison. There will also be a new anti-slavery | :02:00. | :02:02.
commissioner to make sure the law works. They hope these measures will | :02:03. | :02:05.
reduce the number of people held in modern slavery in the future. | :02:06. | :02:12.
Thanks, Nel. In other news, the United Nations is warning more than | :02:13. | :02:16.
22 million Syrians will need food, water and medicine next year. They | :02:17. | :02:19.
have launched their biggest ever appeal to try and raise $6.5 billion | :02:20. | :02:23.
to help. It's more than two years since the devastating war between | :02:24. | :02:25.
rebels and government forces started. Freezing temperatures this | :02:26. | :02:28.
winter have made things worse for the millions affected. | :02:29. | :02:32.
And in sport, Man City drew Barcelona, and Arsenal got Bayern | :02:33. | :02:35.
Munich in the Champions League draw this morning. But the big footy news | :02:36. | :02:41.
of the day is that Spurs have sacked their manager, Andre Villas-Boas. It | :02:42. | :02:44.
follows their 5-0 loss to Liverpool yesterday. | :02:45. | :02:49.
Next, chocolate lovers might have noticed your favourite snacks are | :02:50. | :02:53.
shrinking. Sweet makers Mars are reducing the size of their most | :02:54. | :02:56.
popular bars but will still charge you the same to buy one. They say it | :02:57. | :03:01.
isn't about making more money but encouraging healthier eating. I've | :03:02. | :03:05.
been finding out what you think. Chocolate is a multi-billion pound a | :03:06. | :03:10.
year business here in the UK. But if you can't resist the odd sweet treat | :03:11. | :03:14.
from time to time, look out for changes ahead. Because one of the | :03:15. | :03:17.
leading chocolate makers around are about to give you slightly less bar | :03:18. | :03:23.
for your buck. Mars has announced plans to reduce the size of their | :03:24. | :03:26.
signature snack from 58g to 51 and trim Snickers from 58g to 48g, while | :03:27. | :03:32.
still charging you the same same. They say it's part of a pledge to | :03:33. | :03:35.
help people eat more healthily, keeping the amount of calories in | :03:36. | :03:39.
these standard bars to fewer than 250. They're not the first to do it. | :03:40. | :03:44.
Last year Cadbury's shrank the size of their Dairy Milk while keeping | :03:45. | :03:48.
the price the same, they said because of the rising price of the | :03:49. | :03:54.
cocoa that's used to make chocolate. Do you think it's fair that while | :03:55. | :04:01.
reducing the size? Bill, because if you have a set amount of pocket | :04:02. | :04:07.
money, you will not get any more. It is good in one way, because reducing | :04:08. | :04:14.
the amount of obesity in children. I think it is to do with greedy | :04:15. | :04:19.
businesses, and it is not fair about reducing the size and not reducing | :04:20. | :04:25.
the price. Mars say the push for us all to live healthier lifestyles | :04:26. | :04:27.
leaves them little choice, but shoppers are annoyed that the price | :04:28. | :04:31.
won't be coming down with the size. So if you want to keep healthy and | :04:32. | :04:35.
save money, you might just have to eat less. | :04:36. | :04:37.
Finally to Peru, where dogs have gone Christmas crazy. A festive | :04:38. | :04:42.
parade where owners dress up their prized pooches has been held in the | :04:43. | :04:48.
capital, Lima. It was all to encourage owners to look after them | :04:49. | :04:50.
over the holidays. That's it. I'm back at 6:50, see you | :04:51. | :04:53.
then. | :04:54. | :04:57. |
