Thanks for stopping by everyone. You're with Ricky for Tuesday's | :00:22. | :00:28.
Newsround. We've got all the big stories covered, including some of | :00:28. | :00:32.
this: We track down the athletes that could be training near you. | :00:32. | :00:37.
And fed up of the rain? Well, we might have some good news for you. | :00:37. | :00:45.
Stick around for all that. First thought, its taken seven years and | :00:45. | :00:48.
a whopping 9 billion to organise the Olympic and Paralympic Games. | :00:48. | :00:51.
It looked like everything was going smoothly until last week when one | :00:51. | :00:54.
of the big companies responsible for guarding the venues said it | :00:54. | :00:57.
didn't have enough security guards to do the job. Today the company's | :00:57. | :01:00.
boss faced a grilling from MPs, but as I've been finding out, putting | :01:00. | :01:02.
on a major sporting event is never straight forward. | :01:03. | :01:07.
On your marks, get set, GO! In the race to host a major sporting event | :01:07. | :01:11.
there are always going to be a few hurdles. In 2010 in India at the | :01:11. | :01:14.
Commonwealth Games the track was still being laid days before the | :01:14. | :01:19.
100 metres. At the last Olympics in China officials thought about | :01:19. | :01:23.
calling off some events altogether because of air pollution. And in | :01:23. | :01:26.
2004 just weeks before the opening ceremony in Greece some of the | :01:26. | :01:30.
stadiums still weren't finished. Now, London's venues have been | :01:30. | :01:34.
built on time and on budget, so what's the problem? Well it's all | :01:34. | :01:38.
focusing on this company, G4S. They were given the job of providing | :01:38. | :01:42.
security guards for lots of the Olympic venues around the country. | :01:42. | :01:45.
Last week, just two weeks before the start of Games the boss of G4S | :01:45. | :01:48.
told the Government that they couldn't deliver the staff they'd | :01:48. | :01:53.
promised. Yesterday 56 security staff were meant to show up to look | :01:53. | :01:56.
after Olympic footballers who'll be staying at this hotel, but only 17 | :01:56. | :02:03.
actually arrived. Local police had to be brought in. They had been | :02:03. | :02:05.
asked to supply 10,000 members of security staff altogether but have | :02:06. | :02:08.
said that technical and management problems mean that they just aren't | :02:08. | :02:16.
sure where their staff are. The Government has asked extra police | :02:16. | :02:19.
officers and soldiers to be drafted in to make sure they have all the | :02:19. | :02:24.
security they need. Organising the Games has been a massive operation | :02:24. | :02:28.
that's taken seven years and 9 billion. With ten days to go the | :02:28. | :02:33.
finish line is finally in sight. That's the security sorted but what | :02:33. | :02:37.
about the people we're all waiting to see? The world's best sports | :02:37. | :02:41.
stars are heading to the UK and do you think they're all training at | :02:41. | :02:45.
stadiums and sports venues in London? Think again! They're all | :02:45. | :02:49.
over Britain. And not all of them are using typical sports venues. | :02:49. | :02:52.
Some teams are based at universities and even schools. The | :02:52. | :02:54.
Malawi team are training at the University of Gloucestershire. The | :02:54. | :02:56.
Colombians are in Gateshead. Meanwhile the US synchronised | :02:56. | :02:59.
swimming team are further a field - they're at the National Aquatics | :02:59. | :03:02.
Centre over in Dublin. Birmingham will be hosting Usain Bolt and the | :03:02. | :03:05.
rest of the Jamaican athletics team at the university. Russian swimmers | :03:05. | :03:08.
are getting some last minute lengths in at a school in Somerset. | :03:08. | :03:11.
And the Cameroon Olympic team are at a sports village up in Aberdeen. | :03:12. | :03:16.
We asked if any of you have seen any athletes training near you. And | :03:16. | :03:26.
:03:26. | :03:42. | ||
Usain Bolt is looking like he's destined for a medal at the Games, | :03:42. | :03:46.
but his main competition might actually come from his team-mate. | :03:46. | :03:49.
The Lightening Bolt has been speaking about how his training pal, | :03:49. | :03:59.
Yohan Blake is also going for gold. He was asked who he wants to win if | :03:59. | :04:07.
he does not come first. Please do not Jinks me on that one. | :04:07. | :04:12.
Definitely Blake, because I am happy for him. We train every day | :04:12. | :04:20.
and I know how hard he works. Let's not ask that question again, please. | :04:20. | :04:24.
Next, a story for anyone that's fed up of the rain. Forecasters say the | :04:24. | :04:27.
bad weather is down to something called the jet stream that's been | :04:27. | :04:30.
hanging over Britain for the last two months. It's known for bringing | :04:30. | :04:34.
bad weather, but the good news is it looks like it should soon be | :04:34. | :04:37.
moving north away from Britain which means if we're lucky we might | :04:37. | :04:40.
just see some sunshine. The wet weather here has been causing | :04:40. | :04:43.
problems for farmers but in America it's dry weather that they're | :04:43. | :04:47.
worried about. More than half of the country is in drought and the | :04:47. | :04:51.
dry conditions are having an impact on crops like corn and soybeans. | :04:51. | :04:54.
It's the worst drought in the country for more than 50 years with | :04:54. | :04:58.
more than 1,000 areas are being called disaster zones. And now | :04:58. | :05:02.
there are worries that the poor harvest could lead to a rise in | :05:02. | :05:06.
food prices. At this time of year the crops | :05:06. | :05:09.
should be growing high, ready for harvesting in the autumn. But this | :05:09. | :05:13.
year it is so dry that many plants have been damaged. The leaves have | :05:13. | :05:23.
turned brown and crispy and the soil is bone dry. This should be as | :05:23. | :05:32.
high as my head right now. This cannot reach its maximum potential. | :05:32. | :05:36.
It is already damaged. It's estimated that 30% of the corn | :05:36. | :05:39.
planted in the area of America called the corn belt is already in | :05:39. | :05:47.
a poor or very poor condition. we grow most of the corn and soya | :05:48. | :05:52.
beans in the United States and this is work the drought is centred. It | :05:52. | :05:56.
is very serious. Crops have been affected so badly that some farmers | :05:56. | :05:58.
have already decided it's not worth harvesting and are throwing away | :05:58. | :06:02.
the corn instead. It might be a long way away, but all this does | :06:02. | :06:05.
affect us. Corn provides food for lots of people around the world and | :06:05. | :06:09.
it's also used for animal feed and to make a type of fuel called | :06:09. | :06:12.
ethanol. America is one of the largest producers of it and so the | :06:12. | :06:15.
bad harvest this year means that there will be less corn. That will | :06:15. | :06:18.
make the stuff that there is, more expensive, which will drive prices | :06:18. | :06:28.
:06:28. | :06:30. | ||
up all over the world. It won't just be corn on the cob that could | :06:30. | :06:33.
become more expensive. The plant is used in all sorts of products from | :06:33. | :06:36.
cereal to face wash. Although food prices won't increase straight away, | :06:36. | :06:39.
this drought is likely to affect the prices in the supermarket by | :06:39. | :06:41.
the end of next year. Next, the UEFA nominations for best | :06:41. | :06:44.
player in Europe are out. On the list are football favourites like | :06:44. | :06:48.
Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Les Davies?! Yep, | :06:48. | :06:51.
you heard it right. The 27-year-old Bangor City winger has been | :06:51. | :06:55.
nominated for the award. Davies said he was stunned to be on the | :06:56. | :06:59.
list but - get this fact fans - he scored more goals in the league | :06:59. | :07:05.
last season than Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres put together! Want | :07:05. | :07:08.
to find out more? Head over to the Newsround website and check out our | :07:08. | :07:12.
fact file! Newsround's been asking some of | :07:12. | :07:15.
Great Britain's most A-list Olympic medallists to tell us what it's | :07:15. | :07:18.
like to take part in the biggest sporting event on earth. Today it's | :07:18. | :07:22.
Zac Purchase. He and rowing partner, Mark Hunter grabbed gold at the | :07:22. | :07:24.
last Olympics, becoming the first British champs in the Lightweight | :07:24. | :07:34.
:07:34. | :07:35. | ||
Double Sculls. My name is Zack purchase and I | :07:35. | :07:44.
competed in the Beijing Olympics in the sport of rowing. A few days | :07:44. | :07:47.
before our final were really exciting, we have had a fantastic | :07:47. | :07:54.
year. We were going to the final with a strong chance of winning the | :07:54. | :08:00.
gold medal. On the day of the final the race wasn't until about 1:30pm, | :08:00. | :08:04.
so we have the entire morning to relax. I watched a couple of films | :08:04. | :08:09.
and had a nice breakfast. Then we went to the lake and warmed up and | :08:09. | :08:15.
made sure we were ready to race. We had a fantastic race in Beijing. We | :08:15. | :08:19.
crossed the finish line first so it was an exciting end to a fantastic | :08:19. | :08:25.
year. My favourite memory in Beijing was standing on the medal | :08:25. | :08:28.
podium and hearing the national anthem being played and watching | :08:28. | :08:33.
the flag going up the flagpole. Coming back to the UK after it was | :08:33. | :08:39.
finished was fantastic. The aeroplane had a cold front on it | :08:39. | :08:44.
and fall of Olympic champions. The atmosphere was great because | :08:44. | :08:50. |
