First to the Middle East, where it's hoped

a ceasefire agreement will bring peace between Palestinian militants

in the Gaza Strip, and Israel, if both sides can agree to it.

The fighting has been going on for over a week,

and Hayley's been looking into how kids there have been affected.

There has been violence in this part of the world

for decades between Israel and Palestinian groups based in Gaza.

The Palestinian groups are unhappy that Israel controls some of what

can come in and out of Gaza.

Israel is unhappy that it comes under attack from inside Gaza.

The last major period of fighting between

the two sides took place in 2012.

Then in June this year, three Israeli teenagers were

murdered in the West Bank, which is controlled by Israel.

Israel blames the murders on Hamas, the Islamic militant group that

control Gaza.

Hamas say they were not involved.

Tensions rose further after a Palestinian teenager was

killed in Jerusalem in what may have been a revenge attack.

In the past week, hundreds of rockets have been fired from Gaza

by militants into Israel, which has a high-tech missile defence system.

Israel has launched airstrikes at Gaza, saying it is the only way for

them to stop rockets being fired.

Around 200 people have been killed in Gaza.

The UN says over three-quarters of those who died were civilians.

Israel says Hamas hides its fighters amongst civilians.

Thousands of people have also fled their homes.

So what has life been like over the past week for kids

on both sides of the divide?

The BBC's James Reynolds is in Israel, and Paul Adams is in Gaza.

Kids here in this Israeli city are almost on holidays, but these

holidays are really strange.

Every few hours in the city, we hear air raid warnings,

really loud sirens.

Everyone here, all the kids and their mums and dads, have to

stop whatever they are doing, get inside, and go to a strong protected

room in their house, or sometimes just the bathroom, to stay safe.

Sometimes in the sky we see the streaks of Israeli intercepted

missiles, making sure that those rockets don't land here.

but it is the middle of the summer holidays here in the Gaza Strip.

It is also the middle of the holy month of Ramadan,

and these children are fasting.

Around a quarter of all the casualties in

the last couple of weeks have been children here in the Gaza Strip.

There are no air raid sirens.

There are no bomb shelters.

It is a really dangerous place for anyone to live.

The sad truth is that if you are around six years old here

in Gaza, this is the third time you've been through this.

Even if things calm down again following this fighting,

no-one thinks a long-term solution to these problems will be found any

time soon.

Moving on, a massive heat wave is heading to the UK just in time

for the summer holidays.

Weather forecasters say tomorrow could be the hottest day

of the year.

People are being told to drink lots of water, use sunscreen,

and stay out of the sun at the hottest times of day.

It's all because of a storm thousands of miles away.

Here's BBC weatherman, Peter Gibbs, to explain what's going on.

In the first week of July, a super typhoon

was churning across the Pacific.

It brought strong winds and heavy rains to Japan,

but also dragged a mass of warm tropical air northwards, giving the

jet stream a kick.

Just like flicking a skipping rope, that set off a ripple

which rang out across the Pacific.

It is also extending its influence across the Atlantic.

It has forced the jet stream to swing northwards across Europe.

That is allowing warm, humid air, known as a Spanish plume, to spread

across the UK, bringing a brief heatwave, breaking

down into big thunderstorms.

A storm over the north-west Pacific can set off by the storms ten days

later 10,000 miles away.

Now, take a look at these guys.

Although they are very different, they're the best of friends.

This baby drill monkey, Mubi, is being raised by a zoo keeper

after her mother rejected her.

He took her home and she settled straight in.
