Hello. It's Saturday afternoon I'm Leah and you're live with Newsround. | :00:00. | :00:10.
We've got loads to tell you about so stick around for some of this | :00:11. | :00:14.
Amazing sand sculptures that are out of this world. And how do you like | :00:15. | :00:17.
your eggs? Kids in Germany get creative this Easter But first a big | :00:18. | :00:21.
rescue operation is underway on Mount Everest after an avalanche | :00:22. | :00:30.
struck yesterday. Thirteen local guides known as sherpas were killed | :00:31. | :00:32.
and three are still missing. The sherpas job is very dangerous but | :00:33. | :00:39.
without them hundreds of people wouldn't be able to reach the summit | :00:40. | :00:44.
of the world's highest mountain. Everest. One of the toughest | :00:45. | :00:48.
challenges for any human being. It's also one of the most dangerous. And | :00:49. | :00:54.
making it to the top wouldn't be possible without help from sherpas, | :00:55. | :00:57.
local people who are highly skilled climbers. They know the mountain and | :00:58. | :01:02.
its terrain very well and act as guides to ensure climbers' safety. | :01:03. | :01:07.
They carry kit, cook food and travel ahead to prepare routes. Climbing | :01:08. | :01:12.
the mountain can be very dangerous because of narrow cracks and | :01:13. | :01:16.
unstable rocks. There's also the lack of oxygen the higher you go. On | :01:17. | :01:21.
Friday morning a team of sherpas went ahead of a group of | :01:22. | :01:24.
mountaineers to check out the safest way up the mountain and to fix ropes | :01:25. | :01:28.
for the climbers. But an avalanche struck just above Everest base camp, | :01:29. | :01:32.
an area where people prepare before heading to the summit. It makes it | :01:33. | :01:37.
the deadliest accident on the world's highest mountain. Each year | :01:38. | :01:41.
more and more people are climbing Everest and there's concern that | :01:42. | :01:44.
more trips are putting the lives of sherpas at greater risk each time. | :01:45. | :01:50.
And if you're upset by anything you see on the news there's help and | :01:51. | :01:53.
advice over on the Newsround website. | :01:54. | :01:55.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have visited an air base in | :01:56. | :01:59.
Queensland as they continue their tour of Australia. The royal couple | :02:00. | :02:02.
were welcomed by service men and women and Kate even climbed into the | :02:03. | :02:08.
cockpit of a jet. They also planted a tree at the bases memorial garden | :02:09. | :02:12.
to remember those members of the Australian air force who have lost | :02:13. | :02:16.
their lives. Snooker's world championship starts | :02:17. | :02:19.
today in Sheffield, but for the last year, the world governing body has | :02:20. | :02:22.
been taking a new version of the sport into schools. It's called | :02:23. | :02:26.
functional snooker and the aim is to use the game to improve basic maths | :02:27. | :02:29.
skills, and to tempt a whole new generation to take up the sport. The | :02:30. | :02:39.
BBC's Mike Bushell tried it out. Maths lessons. For many of us, they | :02:40. | :02:49.
leave us scratching our heads. Imagine if that lesson contains | :02:50. | :02:58.
support. A new form of snooker. The 10,000 students over the last year, | :02:59. | :03:05.
queues have replaced books. Functional snooker started a year | :03:06. | :03:09.
ago as part of a project run by the governing body. Steve Davis has been | :03:10. | :03:17.
sent in to demonstrate. We ramped up the maths. It can be changed to the | :03:18. | :03:24.
level of abilities. Each ball has a number was up the killers have | :03:25. | :03:35.
multiplication, subtraction or multiplication. You lose six pints | :03:36. | :03:50.
if you point the paint. That takes six points up your school. This | :03:51. | :03:58.
drive into schools will hopefully spread the sport with young players | :03:59. | :04:08.
as well. It is a lot of fun. It has helped me with my maths skills as | :04:09. | :04:13.
well. I believe my parting got worse. By punishment was to be an | :04:14. | :04:22.
assistant for a trick shot. Footy now and there are six Premier | :04:23. | :04:25.
League games kicking off this afternoon. Tottenham and Fulham go | :04:26. | :04:28.
head to head in the early kick off while Chelsea have the opportunity | :04:29. | :04:32.
to go top if they beat Sunderland. Current leaders Liverpool are in | :04:33. | :04:34.
action tomorrow against Norwich who sit just one place above the | :04:35. | :04:37.
relegation zone. Cricket and Lancashire's Peter Moore | :04:38. | :04:40.
has been confirmed as England's new head coach. Moore replaces Andy | :04:41. | :04:48.
Flower after being chosen ahead of England's current one-day coach | :04:49. | :04:50.
Ashley Giles and three other candidates. It's the second time | :04:51. | :04:53.
he's taken charge of the national side. | :04:54. | :04:56.
Now if you hit the beach this weekend do you reckon you could take | :04:57. | :05:00.
on a creation like this? About 5,000 tonnes of beach sand was used for | :05:01. | :05:04.
these creations at the Weston-super-Mare's sand sculpture | :05:05. | :05:05.
festival. This year's sculptures have a Once Upon a Time theme and | :05:06. | :05:09.
include works from The Hobbit. The sand show is due to run until | :05:10. | :05:13.
October. Now as Easter approaches children in | :05:14. | :05:17.
the West German town of Dissen have been busy preparing their eggs. | :05:18. | :05:20.
These guys had a mixture of wax, feathers and dye to jazz up their | :05:21. | :05:24.
creations. They also had to use lot of patience for drawing on the small | :05:25. | :05:27.
dots before soaking them in colour. Great job! Well that's an egg-citing | :05:28. | :05:31.
way to celebrate Easter and you've been telling us your weekend plans | :05:32. | :05:35.
on the website. Roxy is going to have a great time watching CBBC and | :05:36. | :05:39.
eating yummy chocolate! Jasmine is taking part in an epic Easter egg | :05:40. | :05:42.
hunt with her brother and sister. But says she's keeping the big eggs | :05:43. | :05:46.
all for herself. And Mary is attending church for a special | :05:47. | :05:51.
Easter Craft event. Thanks so much for all those comments, keep them | :05:52. | :05:54.
coming in. That's all from me, Newsround's back right here just | :05:55. | :05:57.
before two o'clock. See you then! Bye. | :05:58. | :05:59. |
