and you're live with Newsround. I'm Joe, and here's what's happening

:00:12.:00:14.

today. Find out where Manchester United

:00:14.:00:16.

will be starting their title defence. And Nel finds out how

:00:16.:00:22.

rubbish is being turned into power. What's the weather like where you

:00:22.:00:26.

are today? Sunny, raining, overcast? Well, research by the University of

:00:26.:00:29.

Reading suggests that Britain is going through an unusual weather

:00:29.:00:32.

cycle, increasing the prospect of summer rain which could last for ten

:00:32.:00:38.

years. And this week, the top weather scientists in the country

:00:38.:00:48.

are meeting to try and figure out why.

:00:48.:00:51.

Tuesday, the Met Office, Exeter. Meteorologists and scientists from

:00:51.:00:54.

all over the UK come together in one room. Their mission - to find out

:00:54.:00:57.

what's going on with our unusual weather. A freezing winter three

:00:57.:01:03.

years ago, bringing the country to a halt. Oh, my.Last year, one of the

:01:03.:01:06.

wettest summers on record. And we've just had the chilliest spring for 50

:01:06.:01:10.

years, so what's going on with our weather? The truth is that

:01:10.:01:16.

scientists just don't know! One thing they are sure of is that it's

:01:16.:01:19.

got something to do with this swirl of colours, the Jetstream, a

:01:19.:01:28.

fast-flowing current of air above the Atlantic. But what does it do?

:01:28.:01:31.

The Jetstream is a fast flowing ribbon of air high up in the

:01:31.:01:38.

atmosphere. When it is high up, it can produce sunshine. But when it is

:01:38.:01:42.

to the south of the UK, this allows a lots of wet, windy and cold

:01:42.:01:51.

weather. But it's not just the Jetstream alone. Scientists are also

:01:51.:01:54.

looking into the factors that have an impact on its course - the

:01:54.:01:57.

melting Arctic ice, the temperatures and currents of the Atlantic Ocean

:01:57.:02:01.

and the sun, now in its more active phase of its 11 year cycle. They are

:02:01.:02:04.

all being studied to see how much they could be influencing the air

:02:04.:02:07.

above. And with the patterns of the winds and currents so complex,

:02:07.:02:11.

working it out is going to be one of the toughest challenges in modern

:02:11.:02:15.

science. So for now, we will just have to put up with it and make sure

:02:15.:02:19.

we are prepared for whatever the weather throws at us.

:02:19.:02:23.

Head to the website to see some of our top ideas for what to do on a

:02:23.:02:30.

rainy summer day. Next to the war in Afghanistan. The

:02:30.:02:33.

US has announced that it will hold direct talks with the Taliban, who

:02:33.:02:36.

they have been fighting along with the UK and other international

:02:36.:02:43.

forces for 12 years. The announcement was made just hours

:02:43.:02:46.

before four US service people were killed when the Taliban attacked an

:02:46.:02:49.

airbase in the country. The talks will start within days and some of

:02:49.:02:52.

the conditions from the US include the Taliban breaking ties with

:02:52.:02:55.

extremist group Al-Qaeda. We will have more on this story in our next

:02:55.:02:57.

bulletin. All this week, we have been

:02:57.:03:00.

searching high and low through the world of waste, and today we are

:03:00.:03:04.

talking about rubbish. We sent Nel to see how trash from a landfill

:03:04.:03:07.

site can end up powering our homes. This is the amount of rubbish made

:03:07.:03:11.

by me having my lunch. Normal amount, wouldn't you say? Multiply

:03:11.:03:15.

that by millions of people making waste every day, and you end up with

:03:15.:03:20.

something that looks like that. The UK currently sends 49% of its

:03:20.:03:24.

rubbish to landfill, but that is a long way from countries like Sweden,

:03:24.:03:28.

the Netherlands and Germany, who send about 1%. That is because more

:03:28.:03:32.

and more of them are using incineration technology as a way to

:03:32.:03:36.

turn rubbish into energy. This is an incineration centre outside London,

:03:36.:03:46.
:03:46.:04:01.

where they can turn up to 80% of rubbish they received into

:04:01.:04:03.

electricity. Rubbish is brought from around the country and dropped into

:04:03.:04:05.

the incinerator, which burns the rubbish at over 1000dC. The harmful

:04:05.:04:08.

gases are got rid of safely, but the heat produced is used to turn water

:04:08.:04:10.

into steam to then power turbines which then creates electricity.

:04:10.:04:13.

we burn the rubbish, we can save fossil fuels from being used for

:04:13.:04:14.

electricity, so it saves the environment.

:04:14.:04:18.

Now, it may seem like only five minutes ago that we saw these guys

:04:18.:04:21.

lifting the Premier League trophy, but the football season is upon us

:04:21.:04:23.

once again. The Premier League fixture list was released today,

:04:23.:04:26.

with champions Manchester United kicking off their campaign with a

:04:26.:04:29.

trip to Swansea. So it couldn't have been an easier start for the Red

:04:29.:04:32.

Devils, but former England defender Phil Neville thinks United are

:04:32.:04:34.

favourites for the title once again. The foundations are solid at Man

:04:34.:04:37.

United. They have a great set of players who won the league by 15

:04:37.:04:41.

points last season. It will not be easy, because Jose Mourinho is back

:04:41.:04:46.
