Hi, I'm Ricky with your Monday evening update. | :00:00. | :00:09.
First, should energy drinks be banned from schools? There's a fresh | :00:10. | :00:14.
warning about them from a government adviser on school food. John Vincent | :00:15. | :00:17.
thinks the mix of sugar and caffeine can damage children's concentration | :00:18. | :00:22.
and health. He is calling for more research into the effects of the | :00:23. | :00:25.
drinks on kids. All today, you've been telling us what you think about | :00:26. | :00:27.
this online. Thanks for those comments. | :00:28. | :00:54.
Next to one of the most daring space missions ever attempted, landing on | :00:55. | :00:59.
a comet. We've heard in the past hour that a European spacecraft that | :01:00. | :01:02.
has been asleep in space for two and a half years has woken up to embark | :01:03. | :01:09.
on its daunting task. A comet is a massive lump of ice that is hurtling | :01:10. | :01:13.
through space. And scientists are hoping to land on one. That job is | :01:14. | :01:18.
down to the Rosetta spacecraft, which was launched back in 2004. It | :01:19. | :01:24.
has travelled hundreds of millions of kilometres in our solar system | :01:25. | :01:27.
but has been hibernating for the past two and a half years to save | :01:28. | :01:31.
energy. This morning, an alarm clock was triggered to wake up Rosetta for | :01:32. | :01:35.
the final and riskiest part of its mission. It has to chase after comet | :01:36. | :01:40.
67P, a target of just four kilometres across, and then send out | :01:41. | :01:46.
a robot to land on its icy surface. It is something that has never been | :01:47. | :01:56.
tried before. One question is where the earth god its water from. In the | :01:57. | :02:04.
comet we have a fragment of what was created for and a half million years | :02:05. | :02:10.
ago. By going there, we can test the idea that maybe comets were a source | :02:11. | :02:17.
of water. So now so now Rosetta is awake, it is time to head for its | :02:18. | :02:21.
speeding target. But it won't reach the comet till later this year. | :02:22. | :02:24.
Next, a strong earthquake has shaken New Zealand's North Island. The | :02:25. | :02:27.
quake had a magnitude of 6.3 and struck just after 3pm local time. | :02:28. | :02:30.
People there described major shaking with some damage caused to houses | :02:31. | :02:34.
and buildings. A sculpture of a giant eagle that was used to promote | :02:35. | :02:37.
the Hobbit movie and was hanging from the roof at Wellington airport | :02:38. | :02:41.
fell to the ground. There are no reports of major damage or serious | :02:42. | :02:46.
injury, though. And as always, there is plenty on | :02:47. | :02:49.
the website, including a brilliant gallery of a guy who is best mates | :02:50. | :02:54.
with a Bengal tiger. Check it out. That's all from me. Leah will be | :02:55. | :02:57.
here in the morning with more news. | :02:58. | :03:00. |
