Hello. Tonight, one of the world's most wanted men has been captured | :00:18. | :00:22.
and killed in Libya. Over the next eight minutes, we will bring you | :00:22. | :00:26.
the latest details on the death of Colonel Gaddafi. Also: Wales get | :00:26. | :00:31.
ready to fight for their third place at the Rugby World Cup. | :00:31. | :00:38.
as Westlife call it a day, we look at boybands through the years. | :00:38. | :00:42.
So, our top story: In the last couple of hours, the world has been | :00:42. | :00:46.
told that Colonel Gaddafi, who led Libya for over 40 years and was | :00:46. | :00:50.
overthrown in August, has been caught and killed. As soon as the | :00:50. | :00:54.
news came out, thousands of people came out on to the streets, | :00:54. | :00:58.
chanting and waving flags. These are the latest pictures from Libya. | :00:58. | :01:04.
As you can see, Libyans out on the streets celebrating the end of | :01:04. | :01:10.
Gaddafi's dictatorship. Joining us now is BBC World affairs reporter, | :01:10. | :01:13.
Mark Doyle. You have met Colonel Gaddafi yourself. Talk us through | :01:13. | :01:17.
what's been happening today? What happened today is that all of these | :01:17. | :01:20.
people who have been demonstrating against Colonel Gaddafi's | :01:20. | :01:25.
dictatorship - he ruled without their being elections - so he ruled | :01:25. | :01:31.
with him and his family only. He was cornered by the fighters in a | :01:31. | :01:36.
town called Sirte, which is in northern Libya. For those people | :01:36. | :01:41.
who don't know where Libya is, let's have a look at a map. This is | :01:41. | :01:45.
where it is in relation to the UK. That is Libya. Tripoli, the capital, | :01:45. | :01:51.
is on the coast. He was found in Sirte, his hometown. That's right. | :01:51. | :01:58.
What this means is that because these demonstrators, anti-Gaddafi | :01:58. | :02:02.
fighters have captured Sirte, or they control almost all of Sirte. | :02:02. | :02:05.
They say they have captured and killed Colonel Gaddafi as well. | :02:05. | :02:09.
This means the anti-Gaddafi forces control the whole of Libya. It has | :02:09. | :02:14.
taken nine months now. They have been showing pictures of the body | :02:14. | :02:19.
of Colonel Gaddafi. I have met him personally. It does look like him. | :02:19. | :02:22.
Thank you. Let's remind ourselves what's been happening in Libya over | :02:22. | :02:27.
the last few months. For thousands of Libyans, the | :02:27. | :02:32.
nightmare is over. The sound of car horns beeping, people cheering and | :02:32. | :02:41.
celebratory gunshots in the air are filling the streets. Colonel | :02:41. | :02:45.
Gaddafi had been wanted since February. He went into hiding after | :02:45. | :02:50.
a large group of protesters decided that they were sick of how he was | :02:50. | :02:56.
running the country and wanted to do it themselves. Things soon | :02:56. | :03:00.
turned violent. British planes were sent in along with those from other | :03:00. | :03:04.
countries to support the rebels and try and stop ordinary people being | :03:04. | :03:08.
killed. The rebel group took control of many large Libyan towns | :03:08. | :03:13.
and cities but Gaddafi's forces fought back, hard. Many on both | :03:13. | :03:17.
sides died. But today it looks like it is all over for the forces loyal | :03:17. | :03:21.
to Gaddafi. We are being told their leader was found in a hole in his | :03:21. | :03:27.
hometown of Sirte. He was captured and died from his injuries. People | :03:27. | :03:32.
in Libya today have an even greater chance after this news of building | :03:32. | :03:36.
themselves a strong and democratic future. I'm proud of the role that | :03:36. | :03:41.
Britain has played in helping them to bring that about. I pay tribute | :03:41. | :03:45.
to the bravery of the Libyans who have helped to liberate their | :03:45. | :03:50.
country. Many Libyans had wanted Gaddafi caught alive. They had | :03:50. | :03:54.
hoped that one day he would face trial for the attacks he ordered on | :03:54. | :03:59.
his own people, but now that day will never come. | :03:59. | :04:03.
Libyans have been waiting for this moment for quite a while. What kind | :04:03. | :04:08.
of a big deal does this mean for them? What it means for Libyans, we | :04:08. | :04:13.
hope, is that they will build a free and democratic society. Now, | :04:13. | :04:17.
it's not certain that is going to happen. Libya is quite a rich | :04:17. | :04:23.
country. It's got lots of oil and quite well educated people, lots of | :04:23. | :04:28.
exiles, some of them came here, a lot of those will be going back now | :04:29. | :04:34.
- doctors, professionals and so on. They will want to create a new and | :04:34. | :04:41.
free country. So it's a chance for them to start afresh? It is. Libya | :04:41. | :04:47.
has a lot of chances. Partly because it's got so much oil money. | :04:47. | :04:53.
It could become a fantastic tourism destination. It seems unlikely now. | :04:53. | :04:58.
It does have Roman ruins, fantastic beaches. It has a chance now to | :04:58. | :05:02.
move forward. 40 years of dictatorship is a long time. Thank | :05:02. | :05:08.
you. Cheers. Now let's bring you an update from Dale Farm in Essex. We | :05:08. | :05:12.
are hearing that after two days of clashes, the police trying to clear | :05:12. | :05:17.
the site, the final residents have now left. We will have more details | :05:17. | :05:22.
on that story for you on the Newsround website. | :05:22. | :05:26.
Sport: They may not have made it to the World Cup final, but Wales | :05:26. | :05:29.
could still get a medal if things go their way tomorrow morning. | :05:29. | :05:34.
meet Australia in the third and fourth place play-off. Whatever the | :05:34. | :05:38.
result, they are through to the next World Cup. Gethin Jenkins will | :05:38. | :05:42.
step up as captain after Sam Warburton was sent off in the | :05:42. | :05:46.
semifinal. The final is on Sunday with New | :05:46. | :05:51.
Zealand taking on France. Now, they are one of the most | :05:51. | :05:54.
successful boybands ever. But after 14 years Westlife are calling it a | :05:54. | :05:59.
day, but not until they have released another album and been on | :05:59. | :06:04.
tour. They have had 14 number ones. They are not the first ones to do | :06:04. | :06:10.
that. Our obsession with boybands goes way back. His obsession! | :06:10. | :06:15.
regular guys from Ireland turned international superstars. Westlife | :06:15. | :06:19.
were record-breakers. Their first seven singles went to number one. | :06:19. | :06:24.
Over the last decade-and-a-half, they have sold records in their | :06:24. | :06:29.
bucket-loads. Last night their manager announced the end of an era. | :06:29. | :06:33.
Probably the best people I have ever worked with. Hard-working, | :06:33. | :06:37.
great songs and good singers. They still have it all. They want to | :06:37. | :06:41.
leave on top. Westlife are one boyband to have come and gone over | :06:41. | :06:46.
the years. In the '60s, Beatlemania went global. Every time the Beatles | :06:46. | :06:50.
performed hundreds of screaming girls turned out to see them. Then | :06:50. | :06:55.
came these guys, the Bay City Rollers. They loved tartan and for | :06:55. | :07:00.
a while they were massive. Take That rocked up a few years later. | :07:00. | :07:04.
They had loads of fans. But when Robbie left, things weren't the | :07:04. | :07:09.
same. A year later, they split up. But they got back together and are | :07:09. | :07:15.
now bigger than ever. Loads of other groups followed including | :07:15. | :07:20.
Boyzone. That's not the end of the story. TV talent shows are keeping | :07:20. | :07:24.
boybands going strong. JLS were on the show and they have had two | :07:24. | :07:29.
number ones. These are the new kids on the block, The Wanted and One | :07:29. | :07:33.
Direction. They both topped the charts and this weekend The Wanted | :07:33. | :07:37.
are hoping to bag their third. Westlife fans might be feeling a | :07:37. | :07:41.
bit tearful today, but luckily there are lots of other bands to | :07:41. | :07:44.
choose from. That is all we have time for. If you want to find out | :07:45. | :07:48. |
