Now today is a very important day for Newsround. We're saying goodbye

to BBC One. Don't worry, Newsround will still bring you the news every

day on the CBBC Channel. But after 40 years, we're leaving the BBC's

flagship channel. Here's Ricky to BBC One, the home of some of your

favourite shows. It has been home of Newsround for 40 years. Tonight

it is leaving BBC One to focus on the CBBC channel. On Friday, the

other programmes will join us. When the BBC first created a slot for

children's programmes, there were only four TV channels, but the

arrival of digital TV meant lots more choice. In 2002, CBBC got its

own channel. We have been bringing you the news on it ever since. By

the time it was 10 years old, 1.8 million children were tuning in

every week. Fewer children were tuning in to BBC One. Five times

more children watch it on CBBC than BBC One. Most children watch it on

the CBBC channels. Some people are worried that totally separate

channels will mean families will not what programmes together.

is a danger that in some households the adults will send them to watch

that and they will watch something else. It can improve family

relationships to do that stuff together. Does this mean the end of

child-friendly programmes? Families watch CBeebies and CBBC together.

There are many programmes that family's watch together on BBC One,

entertainment, some of the programmes that get shown on BBC

huge year of news both here in the UK and around the world too. From

Egypt's first democratic election to Superstorm Sandy's huge impact

on the American presidential race, to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee back

here - it's been a momentous twelve months. These were the headlines

from 2012. Today the United Nations has appealed for more to be done to

help the people of Syria. This year has seen lots of fighting in the

country between President Assad's government and opposition forces

who want him to step down as leader. Many thousands have been killed

since the conflict started there. In Egypt, Mohammed Morsi became the

country's first democratically- elected leader. Many people hailed

it as a new start for the country but some people protested about how

he was running things after he came to power. This was one of the big

stories, when the Costa Concordia capsized and hit rocks off the

Italian coast. It was a year of extreme weather with the wettest

summer for 100 years leading to severe flooding across parts of the

UK, and in Superstorm Sandy, causing widespread devastation in

America. Newsround went to America to follow the US election where

Barack Obama won another term as president. People thought it would

be a really close race but he won it comfortably in the end. And it

was a massive year for the British Royal family with the announcement

that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby and The Queen had

a series of parties to celebrate 60 years on the throne.

So that was the big news of the year, but for most of us 2012 will

be remembered as the most incredible year of sport.

We had Wiggo winning the Tour de France. An incredible, dramatic end

to the Premier League season. And The amazing Bradley Wiggins. Well

done, Bradley Wiggins. They are all Jessica Ennis is the Olympic

champion. Sergio Aguero! We are coming live from the Olympic Park.

The gold medals have been raining in four Paralympics Great Britain.

The Olympic sprint champion. Wales have won the Grand Slam. Andy

Some unforgettable stuff. Now Newsround wouldn't be Newsround

without the more weird and wonderful stories from around the

world. We're talking internet video sensations, chart-topping boybands

and, yes - animals doing weird This guy here has got the best of

To mark James Bond's 50th anniversary, new movie Skyfall

smashed box office records to become the most successful UK movie,

EVER. And from one skyfall to another as Felix Baumgartner made

history by jumping from the edge of space back down to earth, in the

highest ever skydive. Sticking with space, NASA successfully sent a

robot called Curiosity to Mars to explore the mysteries of the Red

Planet. But you'd have had to be IN space to have missed the amazing

success of these guys. One Direction broke America with their

first album rocketing to the top of the charts both here and in the

States. And from pop sensations to internet sensations. Gangnam Style

became YouTube's most viewed video of all time. And no year is

complete without a cheesy pop video from America. Thank goodness for

Nicole Westbrook's Thanksgiving song! In London, a market stall

owner found a catchy way of selling fish. Making it easier to watch

those videos on the move, 4G launched in the UK. And our

favourite story of the year. Well, you can't beat - dogs driving cars.
