Hello everyone, Martin here with all the news this Friday. | :00:11. | :00:14.
First, commemorations have been taking place to remember a disaster | :00:15. | :00:17.
that hit the small mining village of Aberfan in Wales. | :00:18. | :00:22.
50 years ago today, a waste heap collapsed on top of buildings | :00:23. | :00:25.
Across Wales people held a minute's silence, | :00:26. | :00:33.
including these school kids, people also released balloons | :00:34. | :00:36.
And Prince Charles visited the Aberfan Memorial Garden | :00:37. | :00:42.
Jenny's been looking into what happened. | :00:43. | :00:52.
Aberfan in south Wales. More than 50 years ago the region was an | :00:53. | :01:00.
important source of coal comedies to heat homes and powertrains. The area | :01:01. | :01:04.
was heavily mined and four years the leftover soil dug out with the coal | :01:05. | :01:09.
was heaped in big piles above the village. But the ground wasn't | :01:10. | :01:14.
stable. It soaked up water, loosening the rock below. Then on | :01:15. | :01:20.
the 21st of October 1966, the build-up of waste suddenly collapsed | :01:21. | :01:24.
and slid down into the surrounding area, covering houses and the local | :01:25. | :01:28.
school. Huge rescue efforts were made, but a lot of people died. This | :01:29. | :01:35.
memorial garden is one of the ways people in Aberfan remember what | :01:36. | :01:39.
happened here. Jeff Edwards was at the school when the disaster | :01:40. | :01:44.
happened. 50 years on, how did it change your community? The village | :01:45. | :01:49.
has changed completely, because in 1966 it was a thriving community. If | :01:50. | :01:54.
you look at it today, it's still a vibrant community, a new generation | :01:55. | :01:58.
of young people have come about, and I think it's important for the | :01:59. | :02:03.
people of Aberfan that the community has a future. And those children are | :02:04. | :02:08.
our future. Before the disaster there had been questions raised | :02:09. | :02:12.
about how safe the waste pile was but nothing was changed. Afterwards, | :02:13. | :02:16.
an investigation found that the National coal board were at fault | :02:17. | :02:23.
for ignoring the warnings. The disaster in Aberfan was devastating | :02:24. | :02:26.
for many families and people across Britain were shocked about what | :02:27. | :02:31.
happened. As a result, new safety rules about mines and quarries were | :02:32. | :02:35.
made to keep villagers, schools and the areas around them safe, and to | :02:36. | :02:38.
stop anything like this from happening again. At this school in | :02:39. | :02:43.
Aberfan, children have been remembering the disaster 50 years | :02:44. | :02:47.
on. I think it's important because it was a big thing that happened and | :02:48. | :02:53.
we never to happen again. We have assemblies, we do work on it in the | :02:54. | :02:57.
class. It's emotional because when you think of all the people who lost | :02:58. | :03:02.
their lives at such a young age, it's very sad. But if we look at the | :03:03. | :03:07.
happy side, we look at the future and we remember them in that way, | :03:08. | :03:13.
not in the past. In school we've been doing a painting of Aberfan and | :03:14. | :03:19.
the future. I painted the memorial garden and the yard with the | :03:20. | :03:22.
children playing in the school. If you want to know more | :03:23. | :03:28.
about what happened in Aberfan then That's also where you can find | :03:29. | :03:31.
lots of info on what to do Next, we're talking | :03:32. | :03:35.
