Hi. Welcome to a special Newsround.
Six months ago today, there was a | 0:00:16 | 0:00:22
terror attack at the Ariana Grande
concert in Manchester. It shocked | 0:00:22 | 0:00:27
the whole country. Hundreds of
people were hurt and 22 people died. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
It affected not only the people who
were there but many who watched the | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
news too. Charities like the NSPCC
and victim support said that | 0:00:35 | 0:00:41
hundreds of children got in touch
with them to say they were worried | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
or scared afterwards. ChildLine
helped nearly 300 children in the | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
two weeks after the attack, four
times as many as usual. Haile has | 0:00:49 | 0:00:56
been speaking to many children who
have told her they were scared to go | 0:00:56 | 0:01:02
into crowded places. They also told
her how they talked about it, help | 0:01:02 | 0:01:07
each other, and what they learned
about coming to terms with what | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
happened. Emily and Lauren are
friends. They went to the Ariana | 0:01:09 | 0:01:15
Grande concert together as it was a
Christmas present from their | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
parents. I remember it being great
lights, everybody singing and | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
dancing, and we all stood up to go,
and all you heard was this bank and | 0:01:23 | 0:01:28
the floor started shaking. Everyone
started running towards us. Then it | 0:01:28 | 0:01:34
was a bit scary. Everyone was
screaming and running down the | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
stairs. How did you feel when that
was happening? Every emotion. I was | 0:01:37 | 0:01:44
scared. I didn't know what was going
on. It makes you feel angry that | 0:01:44 | 0:01:49
someone would target a concert with
such young people there. It's just | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
horrible. The girls try to get back
into normal life but found it | 0:01:54 | 0:01:59
difficult to escape what happened.
There was so much about the bombing | 0:01:59 | 0:02:04
on the news. It was everywhere. You
go one social media, it is all | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
there, people putting messages.
Everybody wanted to speak about it, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
so it is hard to get past that.
Everyone was so focused on it at the | 0:02:14 | 0:02:20
time. Emily and Lauren have had help
from their school counsellor and | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
they started up a group where they
could talk about what they were | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
feeling. We spoke to a teacher
because we were upset and had to | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
leave lessons. They set us up in the
school counsellor's offers and let | 0:02:32 | 0:02:37
us speak each other. I think that
was the best thing to do. How did it | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
help? Siam because everything they
say makes sense -- because | 0:02:41 | 0:02:50
everything they say makes sense. You
realise you're not alone. You two | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
have each other, did that help? Yes.
We still speak about it. We | 0:02:55 | 0:03:01
obviously won't ever forget it but
it is nice that we were there | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
together. There is always someone to
speak about it. Just because people | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
can help you get through it and you
are not alone. You are getting it | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
off your chest and getting it... It
makes you feel lighter about what | 0:03:13 | 0:03:20
happened. Many children all across
the country have been affected by | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
the news of what happened. At this
school in North Wales they brought | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
in extra support to help those kids
who were upset and anxious, and | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
they've even set up a choir where
the people sing Ariana Grande songs | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
and share how they are feeling.
# I was a liar | 0:03:37 | 0:03:43
# I gave into the fire... #. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:54
Even though these children weren't
at the concert, they've told me that | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
they found it difficult to deal with
the news of the attack. When I heard | 0:04:03 | 0:04:12
the news, I was shocked that it had
happened so close to home. I feel | 0:04:12 | 0:04:18
more anxious when I go out,
especially to big places where there | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
are a load of people. I found my
parents have helped me, and my | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
relatives and my sister. They
comforted me and helped me feel | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
better when I was sad. I think now
that it is past, the people ROK and | 0:04:32 | 0:04:39
I have more confidence. You can't
let things like this take over your | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
life forever. Everyone has come
together as a world rather than | 0:04:44 | 0:04:51
letting it get to them. | 0:04:51 | 0:05:02
for Emily and Lauren, Ariana Grande
has played a massive part in helping | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
them. She's really strong to get
through that. So many artists, if a | 0:05:11 | 0:05:16
thing like that happened to you,
obviously she felt guilty but to | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
come back so strong and put on that
concert for a good cause, I think | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
she really helped. Would you both go
to a concert together? I would. I | 0:05:24 | 0:05:30
don't feel scared any more. you feel
safe now? Yes, I feel safe. If you | 0:05:30 | 0:05:37
feel worried or upset by what
happened in Manchester or anything | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
else you hear about in the news, we
have got advice Newsround online. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:46
There is more information and links
charities which can help you. Of | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
course, the rest of the day's news.
Newsround is back from 7:40am | 0:05:50 | 0:05:57
tomorrow. See you soon bye-bye. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59 |
