Hi, I'm Martin, live from Glasgow for a special | :00:18. | :00:19.
I'll be bringing you all the excitement in the city ahead | :00:20. | :00:23.
We retrace the epic journey of the Queen's Baton Relay. | :00:24. | :00:26.
And we meet some of the kids involved in the Commonwealth charity | :00:27. | :00:29.
As if they knew where some heavy action is going to kick off with | :00:30. | :00:52.
massive concerts ahead of the opening ceremony. Before that I will | :00:53. | :00:56.
find out more about what the Commonwealth Games actually is. | :00:57. | :00:59.
The Commonwealth Games take place every four years, | :01:00. | :01:01.
with the 2014 event being held right here in Glasgow. | :01:02. | :01:04.
This is a massive sporting event but only members of the Commonwealth | :01:05. | :01:07.
Many years ago Britain used to control lots of countries as part of | :01:08. | :01:12.
Although these countries are now independent they have chosen to | :01:13. | :01:18.
It is a group of countries across the world which signs up to | :01:19. | :01:27.
a set of values including democracy, law and human rights. | :01:28. | :01:30.
During the opening ceremony the Games will be officially opened | :01:31. | :01:35.
by the Queen, who is the head of the Commonwealth. | :01:36. | :01:39.
6,500 athletes from 71 nations and territories will compete | :01:40. | :01:42.
Instead of a single team representing | :01:43. | :01:47.
Great Britain teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, | :01:48. | :01:50.
the Isle of Man and Jersey and Guernsey each compete separately. | :01:51. | :01:52.
Between 23rd July and 3rd August thousands | :01:53. | :01:54.
of people will be right here to see some of the best athletes in | :01:55. | :01:58.
Unlike at the Olympics, Paralympics will be competing in sports and the | :01:59. | :02:06.
same event. Between 23rd July and 3rd August | :02:07. | :02:17.
thousands of people will be right here to see | :02:18. | :02:19.
some of the best athletes in The Queen launched a special that -- | :02:20. | :02:22.
baton. The Queen put | :02:23. | :02:39.
a secret message inside the baton back in October before it | :02:40. | :02:40.
left Buckingham Palace in London. And since then it's had quite | :02:41. | :02:43.
a journey. One | :02:44. | :02:49.
of its first destinations was India, It travelled on to loads | :02:50. | :02:50.
of small island nations in the Pacific Ocean and stopped off | :02:51. | :02:57.
in Australia and New Zealand too. The baton went underwater | :02:58. | :03:01.
in the Seychelles. Then it went across the Atlantic, | :03:02. | :03:08.
travelling from the Falkland The baton returned to the | :03:09. | :03:11.
British Isles in May, And it's reached some dizzy heights, | :03:12. | :03:16.
including the peak of Mount Snowdon And being parachuted into Gleneagles | :03:17. | :03:23.
golf course. Well, it's the one featured | :03:24. | :03:29.
in some of the Harry Potter movies. The baton is now in Glasgow | :03:30. | :03:35.
and its secret message will finally be revealed | :03:36. | :03:39.
during tonight's opening ceremony. Well, people are in a party mood | :03:40. | :03:47.
here at Glasgow Green, in just a couple of hours a concert will | :03:48. | :03:50.
take place and the opening ceremony Children have been getting involved | :03:51. | :03:53.
in a special song called Let The Games Begin to raise money | :03:54. | :03:59.
for the charity UNICEF and will be Take sides, the next generation is | :04:00. | :04:19.
here tonight. No hesitation. We will leave nothing to fate. I am here | :04:20. | :04:27.
with a couple of the lucky ones who will be singing on that stage. How | :04:28. | :04:33.
do you feel right now about going up on that stage and singing? I am so | :04:34. | :04:39.
excited, you have no idea. What is it like having the Games in your | :04:40. | :04:44.
city? It is great. I did not expect it when the news came. What do you | :04:45. | :04:49.
think it will be like when you get up on the stage? The crowd is going | :04:50. | :04:53.
to be huge and we will be thinking about all the children we are going | :04:54. | :04:57.
to save by raising money for them. What will it be like when the Games | :04:58. | :05:02.
get underway. It will be crazy. Everyone is buzzing for the Games | :05:03. | :05:05.
because where we come from is the East End of Glasgow which is in the | :05:06. | :05:09.
heart of the Commonwealth Games. Why is Glasgow such a great place to | :05:10. | :05:13.
host the Commonwealth? We have got all the venues and all of the nice | :05:14. | :05:18.
people in Glasgow. Are there any sport you are looking forward to in | :05:19. | :05:22.
particular? The gymnastics, I am going to be going to watch it. What | :05:23. | :05:28.
has it been like in the build-up. We have been really busy. We were in | :05:29. | :05:35.
the recording studio and we did not ever think we would be here. I your | :05:36. | :05:41.
