dissapointed a women | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
didn't get the job. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
You will recognise many of these
characters. They are from some of | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
the most loved children's books.
Have you ever wondered who the | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
person is behind the drawings? His
name is Axel Scheffler and we have | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
been to meet him. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:27
Axel Scheffler is an illustrator
who has delighted fans | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
with his work for decades. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32
He was born in Hamburg,
in Germany, and came to the UK | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
to study art in 1982. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
Axel spent much of his
childhood drawing. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
This is some of his work
when he was just eight years old. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
Since then, he's illustrated
over 100 books, many | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
written by Julia Donaldson. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:53
These are just some of his most
famous creations - like Stick Man, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
The Snail And The Whale and Zog. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:04
The most famous of all has
to be The Gruffalo. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
So, how does Axel bring
his ideas to life? | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
When I get the text,
I start doodling and trying | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
to develop the character first. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Quite often I have an idea
immediately what the characters | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
should look like. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
But sometimes, like
with the Grufallo, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
the editor says, "could
you do him less scary?" | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
So sometimes I have
to adopt it a little bit. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
Usually like the smaller
rodent characters. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
They're easiest for me to draw. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
What is the best thing
about being an illustrator? | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
I see so many families who love them
and for whom the books | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
are really important. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:39
It's the link between
parents and children. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
It's a nice occupation to just draw. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:46
That's all we've got
time for right now. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
We're back at 8.15 with more
on the big winners from last nights | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
National Television
Awards and the rest of | 0:04:56 | 0:04:57
the day's big stories. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
See you then. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:05 |
