You're in the right place for all of Thursday's top stories. I'm Ricky

:00:00.:00:10.

with some of this. I have been finding out why violence

:00:11.:00:13.

in Brazil is causing problems with the World Cup just weeks

:00:14.:00:16.

And one of the world's most iconic puzzles celebrates a big birthday.

:00:17.:00:24.

This is Newsround. First to Brazil and the city of Rio de Janeiro. It's

:00:25.:00:28.

one of the locations for this summer's World Cup, as well as the

:00:29.:00:33.

host city for the next Olympics. But this week has seen violent clashes

:00:34.:00:36.

there, close to a popular tourist spot. It's the latest in a long line

:00:37.:00:40.

of problems to hit Brazil, with the world's biggest football tournament

:00:41.:00:43.

just weeks away. Martin's got more. It's just a month to go until the

:00:44.:00:48.

world cup starts and these are the pictures the world is seeing of

:00:49.:00:51.

Brazil. Violence broke out in a poor area close to Rio's famous beaches.

:00:52.:00:56.

Barricades were set up and tyres lit on fire. The violence started

:00:57.:01:00.

because local people believed that the police had killed an innocent

:01:01.:01:04.

man. The area is a neighbourhood known as a favela, or a slum, where

:01:05.:01:08.

poor people live. There are many favelas in Brazil's big cities and

:01:09.:01:11.

they often have huge problems with crime. This latest violence is a

:01:12.:01:16.

real worry because it's happening close to the big tourist areas in

:01:17.:01:20.

the city. But so far, there's been no risk to visitors coming to the

:01:21.:01:23.

country. Brazil's famous for its love of football, but it also has a

:01:24.:01:28.

lot of crime and poverty. The government has been trying to

:01:29.:01:31.

improve things ahead of the World Cup by sending armed police into the

:01:32.:01:34.

favelas to try drive out the criminals. The problem is it just

:01:35.:01:39.

seems to have moved the trouble to other areas. Brazil was awarded the

:01:40.:01:44.

World Cup seven years ago, and it promised to tackle the crime

:01:45.:01:51.

problems. But the crime's so widespread, it's a massive task.

:01:52.:01:56.

There have also been issues with stadiums not being ready and huge

:01:57.:01:59.

protests about how much public money it's all costing, money that some

:02:00.:02:03.

say could be going to help poor people in the country. With just a

:02:04.:02:09.

few weeks to go before the best players on the planet compete for

:02:10.:02:13.

this trophy, Brazil's got a big job on its hands to convince the world

:02:14.:02:19.

it's ready. Next, we're talking hedgehogs. Once

:02:20.:02:23.

a big part of British wildlife in years past, now they're listed as an

:02:24.:02:26.

endangered species. But a new study has found that in some areas,

:02:27.:02:30.

they're on the rise because of the controversial badger cull trial.

:02:31.:02:32.

Here's Leah. They're cute, small and seriously

:02:33.:02:39.

spiky. But across the UK, the number of hedgehogs has been going down for

:02:40.:02:43.

years. One reason for this is thought to be that the areas where

:02:44.:02:47.

they live have been built on or used for farming crops. But another

:02:48.:02:53.

threat is the badger. They both compete for the same food, a mix of

:02:54.:02:57.

slugs and worms, meaning the bigger animal wins. And in the wild badgers

:02:58.:03:03.

will often eat hedgehogs, too. Now, researchers from Exeter and

:03:04.:03:05.

Southampton University have found in the areas where badger culls are

:03:06.:03:08.

taking place, numbers of hedgehogs have more than doubled. We also saw

:03:09.:03:19.

from the same surveys that when you remove badgers, you ended up with

:03:20.:03:25.

more foxes around and that could have a negative effect on other

:03:26.:03:29.

wildlife. The key point is when you manage wildlife in an intensive way,

:03:30.:03:35.

you can end up with a whole host of unexpected and complex outcomes for

:03:36.:03:40.

other species. We need to think carefully before we undertake

:03:41.:03:43.

large-scale wildlife management such as this. The research was funded by

:03:44.:03:47.

the government department for environment, food and rural affairs,

:03:48.:03:50.

who are behind the badger cull. And not everyone agrees with it. So

:03:51.:03:53.

while numbers are on the up where the cull is taking place, in other

:03:54.:03:57.

parts of the country hedgehogs are struggling. Conservationists are

:03:58.:03:59.

warning unless action is taken these spiky creatures may not be with us

:04:00.:04:04.

for much longer. It's one of the bestselling toys of

:04:05.:04:08.

all time and today it celebrates 40 years of frustrating and puzzling

:04:09.:04:11.

millions of people. The Rubik Cube first started life in 1974 and was

:04:12.:04:15.

originally called The Magic Cube. More than 350 million have been sold

:04:16.:04:19.

worldwide and this new exhibition showcasing 40 years of its history

:04:20.:04:24.

is opening in the US. Our website's the place to see some

:04:25.:04:27.

video of a very speedy solving of the cube, as well as find out some

:04:28.:04:31.

fascinating Rubik's cube facts! Last up, manatee news. Four of the

:04:32.:04:34.

creatures rescued from illegal wildlife traders have been released

:04:35.:04:37.

back into the wild in Peru, in South America. Manatees, which are also

:04:38.:04:40.

known as sea-cows, are an endangered species so this was part of a

:04:41.:04:44.

conservation effort to help the creatures. The animals were very

:04:45.:04:47.

young when they were rescued so they have been raised in captivity but

:04:48.:04:50.

this was the moment they tasted freedom once again.

:04:51.:04:56.

That's all from me, Newsround's back just before seven. See ya!
