Hello! Newsround has arrived on BBC 1. We are staying put until you are | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
up-to-date with the day's top stories. Leah and Ricky here to | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
guide you through it all. Don't switch over, otherwise you miss | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
this. We find out why the popularity of | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
some pooches could mean curtains for British breeds. And find out | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
how you could be cooking for the Queen. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
First, to the debate that is not going away, Scottish independence. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
Today, the people who want Scotland to break away from the rest of the | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
UK have been outlining their plans for a big vote on the issue. Joe is | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
live for us at Holyrood, the Scottish Parliament, where it has | 0:00:41 | 0:00:46
all been happening. He has the latest news for us. Bring us up to | 0:00:46 | 0:00:54
date. Well, it has been quite a day here. A couple of hours ago, right | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
here in this very room, the most important politician in Scotland, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
the First Minister Alex Salmond, outlined his plans to let people | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
here vote on whether they want Scotland to be independent. The | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
headlines are that he wants a simple vote on independence, so | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
people who live in Scotland will be able to say yes or no, rather than | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
have other options to increase Scotland's powers which had been | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
suggested. He has said the vote should be held in 2014 and that 16 | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
and 17 year-olds who were normally too young to vote on political | 0:01:20 | 0:01:26
decisions should also be allowed to have their say. Here is what he | 0:01:26 | 0:01:33
said. Independence will give us the chance to design policies for | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
Scotland's needs. That means we can make Scotland the country we all | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
know it can be, a fairer nation. Now he received a big round of | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
applause at the end of his speech, so does that mean that most people | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
are in favour of Scottish independence? Well, not necessarily. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
The UK prime minister David Cameron has already said he does not want | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
the United Kingdom to split up and also says the majority of Scottish | 0:01:56 | 0:02:06
0:02:06 | 0:02:06 | ||
people don't want it either. don't think we have enough industry | 0:02:06 | 0:02:11
to go it alone. It is a big step to take. Yes, I think we have the | 0:02:11 | 0:02:16
power to do it ourselves. People want something better and they may | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
think independence will give them back but I have my doubts. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
So, how big a deal would it be if Scotland could become independent? | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
A very big deal. Scotland has been part of the UK for more than 300 | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
years, but aside from that, there are a lot of questions about how | 0:02:32 | 0:02:37
things would be divided up. Scotland has access to a lot of oil | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
in the North Sea and they would want that all for themselves. But | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
the UK as a whole also has a lot of debt, so if Scotland were to leave, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:54
it would need to take on a portion of that. There are other things | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
like Scotland needing its own army and no longer having the BBC/ but | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
at the moment, there are no suggestions that you would need a | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
passport to cross the border from England. The next step though is | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
for Alex Salmond to meet David Cameron to discuss the plans | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
further. Thanks, Joe and we will have more | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
from Scotland tomorrow. Now, picture the scene. December | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
2012 and the whole country is in the grip of royal fever. The | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
Queen's Diamond Jubilee is in full swing and there are parties on the | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
street, banners being waved and people cheering as Her Majesty get | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
ready for a splendid meal fit for royalty. A meal you could be | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
making! Yes, you could bag a trip to the Buckingham Palace to serve | 0:03:31 | 0:03:36
up grub for the Queen. And that is just where I have been. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
In the summer of this year, a select number of children will get | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
to come to the kitchens at Buckingham Palace, to see if their | 0:03:42 | 0:03:47
winning menu can be created for the Queen. So I have come to find out | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
what she likes. To answer that important question, I got to meet | 0:03:52 | 0:03:59
the Palace's head chef, Mark Flannaghan. What does the Queen | 0:03:59 | 0:04:05
like to eat? I could not possibly go into the specifics. So, coming | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
up with a menu for Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee, is going to be | 0:04:08 | 0:04:17
tough. Tell us what would make a winning menu. I would hope to see a | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
lot of regional choice. I would encourage them to talk to their | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
grandparents to see what they like to eat and to use the vegetables | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
and fish from their local area. This is not the first time a dish | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
has been created for the Queen. To mark Her Majesty's coronation in | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
1953, this was invented, coronation chicken! What would you guys come | 0:04:37 | 0:04:44
up with almost 60 years on? I would cook a big chocolate cake with | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
strawberries on the top. I would probably bake a Victoria sponge | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
that -- because of Queen Victoria but I might call it an Elizabeth | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
sponge! I might make some chicken tikka masala because everyone likes | 0:04:57 | 0:05:02
it. The food has to be British and represent the region you live in. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
They need to be easily produced in the form on these posh canapes. The | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
winners will get to cook right here and serve the Queen at a special | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
reception to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
All day we have been asking you online what it you would cook for | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
Her Majesty. Meghan from Berkshire said she would cook macaroni and | 0:05:20 | 0:05:25
cheese. If she doesn't like it, she can have bread! Jason from Derby | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
says, I would cook her noodles for starter, gammon and pineapple for | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
her main and spotted dick for pudding. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Now, when you think of extinct animals, your mind might turn to | 0:05:36 | 0:05:42
dodos? Already gone! Or pandas? Always at risk. But what about | 0:05:42 | 0:05:47
British dogs? Well, not all of them. A new study says some breeds are at | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
serious risk because people have turned their attention to more | 0:05:50 | 0:05:55
exotic dogs. Flick through the pages of any | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
magazine these days and you'll see that certain breeds of dog have | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
become the must-have celebrity accessory. Thanks to Paris Hilton, | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
actress Katherine Heigl and film star Mickey Rourke, breeds like | 0:06:04 | 0:06:11
chihuahuas and huskies are in demand like never before. But now | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
there is a warning that could have a devastating effect on some other | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
more traditional breeds of man's best friend. Dog experts, the | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
Kennel Club, said the obsession with celeb-like pooches has left | 0:06:21 | 0:06:31
0:06:31 | 0:06:31 | ||
some types of dog on the verge of extinction. Old-fashioned breeds | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
are beginning to lose their popularity with the public because | 0:06:34 | 0:06:39
so many new breeds are coming into the country. One of the worst | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
affected is the English setter. Demand for them has gone down by | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
two-thirds in the last ten years and last year, there were less than | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
300 setter pups registered in the whole of the UK. Not all breeds are | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
in trouble. The popularity of the official royal dog, the corgi, has | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
gone through the roof since the royal wedding last year, with sales | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
up 134 per cent! But after years as man's best friend, it seems some | 0:07:01 | 0:07:07
other breeds of very sadly going out of fashion fast. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
And finally, yesterday we told about the northern lights that were | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
visible from some parts of the UK. Now check out these new pictures of | 0:07:15 | 0:07:24
what has been causing them. They show a solar storm heading towards | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
Earth. It can interfere with technology down here like | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
electrical power grids, communications systems and even | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
sat-navs. But don't worry, it will not do you any harm. That is your | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
lot, everyone. Thank you for stopping by. I will be back just | 0:07:37 | 0:07:45 |
