Good afternoon, I'm Ayshah.

0:00:030:00:06

On Newsround today, we're talking about some major news to do with

0:00:060:00:08

the Hillsborough Disaster of 1989.

0:00:080:00:15

Today is a huge day for the city of Liverpool,

0:00:200:00:23

and football supporters across the UK.

0:00:230:00:25

It's because of a disaster that happened at a football stadium

0:00:250:00:25

called Hillsborough in 1989.

0:00:280:00:31

In a minute, we'll find out about what's been going on today.

0:00:310:00:34

But first, let's look back at what happened 27 years ago.

0:00:340:00:39

On Saturday the 15th of April, 1989, Liverpool fans arrived

0:00:390:00:43

at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium to watch the FA Cup semi-final.

0:00:430:00:49

Too many fans were let into the stadium, and many of them

0:00:490:00:52

got caught up in a crush.

0:00:520:00:56

96 people died and hundreds more were injured.

0:00:560:01:01

Because of this disaster, football stadiums have changed.

0:01:010:01:04

Fans all have seats and there are no longer metal fences

0:01:040:01:06

between the pitch and the stands.

0:01:060:01:12

This has made football grounds much safer, so a disaster like this

0:01:120:01:15

could never happen again.

0:01:150:01:17

Since the disaster, families of the victims have been

0:01:190:01:21

searching for answers to what happened at Hillsborough.

0:01:210:01:24

For the past two years, an inquest has been

0:01:240:01:27

trying to find the truth.

0:01:270:01:28

And today, the decisions have been made.

0:01:280:01:33

The BBC's Judith Moritz was at the inquest

0:01:330:01:35

and sent this report for Newsround.

0:01:350:01:36

An inquest is where you find out how and why somebody died.

0:01:390:01:41

And at Hillsborough, very sadly, 96 people died.

0:01:410:01:43

So there's a lot to find out and, also, it happened nearly 30 years

0:01:430:01:48

ago - it's taken a really long time to get the answers.

0:01:480:01:53

Well, today, it was decided that the Liverpool fans who died,

0:01:530:01:56

they died because the policeman who was in charge of

0:01:560:02:02

the game they were at made a really big mistake.

0:02:020:02:05

He allowed too many people to go inside the football ground,

0:02:050:02:08

and there was a crush.

0:02:080:02:10

Well, the families of the people who died say they are really pleased

0:02:100:02:14

to find out at last what's happened, but they also say they really

0:02:140:02:17

miss their relatives very much.

0:02:170:02:19

And if you go to Newsround online, you can find our full guide

0:02:210:02:24

on the Hillsborough Disaster, which includes what happened

0:02:240:02:27

in 1989, why it's still important today, and more

0:02:270:02:30

about today's decisions.

0:02:300:02:35

And there's also advice on what you should do

0:02:350:02:37

if anything in the news upsets you.

0:02:370:02:40

To find out more about why today's decision does matter so much,

0:02:410:02:46

Ricky has been to a school in Merseyside to talk to

0:02:460:02:51

students there about Hillsborough.

0:02:510:02:52

I've grown up with the story.

0:02:520:02:54

It's always been something that's bothered us all.

0:02:540:02:56

It's always been fresh in our mind.

0:02:560:02:57

I think it definitely should be talked about,

0:02:570:02:59

it should be remembered, because it was one of

0:02:590:03:02

the most significant events in football history.

0:03:020:03:03

Because a lot of them were young, and they had their lives ahead

0:03:030:03:06

of them, and it was really unfair that their lives were just cut short

0:03:060:03:10

just because they went to a football game.

0:03:100:03:11

My dad was actually at the match in 1989 and he was actually

0:03:110:03:15

evacuated out of the ground as it was happening,

0:03:150:03:17

and he actually knew what went on.

0:03:170:03:20

I've been to the Memorial at Anfield every year

0:03:200:03:22

for as long as I can remember.

0:03:220:03:25

My mum takes me, and the atmosphere there is something that I can't

0:03:250:03:28

describe, because it's so...

0:03:280:03:29

It's so different and it's so heartbreaking.

0:03:290:03:31

It affected everyone.

0:03:310:03:33

There was 96 people with families and most of them had nieces,

0:03:330:03:36

nephews, sons and daughters that they'll never get to meet.

0:03:360:03:41

The Hillsborough Disaster may have happened 27 years ago, but people

0:03:410:03:45

are still talking about it today, especially in and around Liverpool.

0:03:450:03:49

One of the boys who died at the football match in 1989

0:03:490:03:52

came to this school.

0:03:520:03:55

Kevin was just 15 years old and there is a memorial

0:03:550:03:58

here to remember him.

0:03:580:04:01

Well, I've come here to find out what the kids here think

0:04:010:04:04

about today's decision.

0:04:040:04:04

I think it's the result that everybody wanted to hear.

0:04:040:04:07

We spent so long waiting for a result, and we finally

0:04:070:04:11

got it, and it's hopefully what everybody wanted.

0:04:110:04:13

Definitely, there will be a big relief in Liverpool,

0:04:130:04:17

because it kind of brings everyone in Liverpool together as a community

0:04:170:04:21

and knowing that such a good outcome has came from it,

0:04:210:04:25

that's kind of the outcome everyone's hoped for and everyone's

0:04:250:04:27

wanted justice for so long,

0:04:270:04:29

so everyone will be thrilled with it.

0:04:290:04:32

Since I've been growing up, Hillsborough's always been

0:04:320:04:34

a question over what happened, and I think today is really

0:04:340:04:37

going to be a bit of a relief to people that they actually know

0:04:370:04:40

really what actually happened, rather than it being a question

0:04:400:04:43

of how did it happen, why and who was responsible?

0:04:430:04:47

I think it's important to remember it, so it won't happen again,

0:04:470:04:51

and it is a lesson, so that mistakes can't be repeated,

0:04:510:04:56

so I think it's appropriate that it is still in the news,

0:04:560:04:59

but some of the families can finally find peace

0:04:590:05:01

now that they have justice.

0:05:010:05:03

They will feel that...

0:05:030:05:06

They will feel relieved and I reckon they will be able to take a step

0:05:060:05:09

forward, but they will never be truly able to forget those

0:05:090:05:12

that they have lost.

0:05:120:05:14

Now that they've got the result that they were unlawfully killed,

0:05:140:05:18

then they can mourn the dead and grieve the way that they should

0:05:180:05:21

have been able to do 27 years ago.

0:05:210:05:25

Thanks, Ricky, for that report.

0:05:250:05:28

That's all from the team today.

0:05:280:05:29

We're back on TV tomorrow morning.

0:05:290:05:31

Hope you have a good evening.

0:05:310:05:38

I'll

0:05:380:05:38

I'll see

0:05:380:05:38

I'll see you

0:05:380:05:38

I'll see you soon,

0:05:380:05:38

I'll see you soon, goodbye.
