Hey, guys. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
I'm Whitney and this is your Friday morning Newsround. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
Coming up... | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Amazing new pictures sent from space. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
The British team chasing glory in the America's Cup. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
And how you score big in a surfing competition. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
So, the general election is just under two weeks away | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
and that's when millions of adults across the UK get to vote | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
for the party they want to be in charge of the government. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
But what is the government? | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
What's an election and a party? | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
Well, here's Ricky to explain. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
It's almost time for the general election! | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
It doesn't sound like the most exciting thing in the world | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
but it is a huge deal and over the next few weeks, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
you're probably going to hear a lot of... | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
This election... | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
General election... General election... | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
A bit of this... | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
MPs... The Government... | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
And almost certainly a few... | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
The general election... Vote... | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Government... | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
So, strap in and listen up and let me | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
try and explain what those words actually mean. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
First up, the election. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Well, a general election usually happens every five years, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
but not always. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
It's when people get to decide who should form a | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
Government and run the country. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
Next, the Prime Minister. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
He or she is head of the Government here in the UK. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
That person is responsible for most of the big decisions | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
that affect your lives. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
They're in charge of the Government. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
And it's usually formed by the party that wins the election. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:37
Hey-hey! | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
No. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40 | |
Not that kind of party. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
You won't find cake and sausage rolls here. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
In politics, a party is a group of people | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
who share the same ideas. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
There are quite a few parties. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
That takes us on to MPs or Members of Parliament. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
In fact, there are 650 of them in total. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Their job is to look after the people in their constituency | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
and that's the area where people voted for them. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
Those MPs also work in the Houses of Parliament which is where | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
new laws and ideas on the way the country should be run | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
get talked about. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
On election day, if you're 18 or over, you'll get to vote. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
That means you get to choose who you want | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
to be your MP, the person who speaks in Parliament | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
for the area where you live. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
But this is nothing like voting for the X Factor | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
or Strictly Come Dancing. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
There is no app, you can't use your mobile phone | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
and you only have one vote. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
You mark an X on a piece of paper at a polling station | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
which is usually inside a school. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
So that means, on the day of the general election, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
loads of you get the day off! | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
So, there you have it. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
MPs, Government, vote... | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
Simple! | 0:02:44 | 0:02:50
Later today, hundreds of athletes will be competing in | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
the Great City Games in Manchester. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
Lots of big names will be taking part, including two-time | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
Paralympic gold medallist Jonnie Peacock. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
He says the event is a chance to show the world the UK is united | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
following the attack in the city on Monday. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
These events are the ones that we need. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
We need to show that it doesn't stop us. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
You know, and I think that's what we show great | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
in this country and I think that's what we do a great job of | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
is that we will wake up the next day, we will get on | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
with our lives, we will stand up, we will go to our jobs, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
we will turn up to events | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
and we will show our support together. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
Next up and it's the oldest competition | 0:03:30 | 0:03:31
in international sport, arguably one of the most | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
difficult trophies to win. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
The America's Cup is the most famous sailing event | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
in the world and guess what - it's back this weekend. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
In its 166-year history, it's never been won by a British team | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
but Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie is looking to break | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
the curse and lead his team team to a first victory. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
For everyone in this team, it would be the biggest achievement | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
if we can pull this off, if we can win the America's Cup for Britain. | 0:03:54 | 0:04:00
You know, look at our sporting maritime heritage, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
it's the one thing that's missing. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:03
It would be huge. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
And it's the World Surfing Games right now in France | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
with surfers from more than 40 countries taking part. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
That's a lot of people. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
But how do you score in surfing? | 0:04:12 | 0:04:13
Well, it's not about being the fastest to the finish line, | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
or the most goals scored. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:17
So how do you win? | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
To win at surfing, you have to impress a panel of judges, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
but what are they looking for? | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
Difficulty. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
Surfers get rewarded for picking big, steep, challenging waves | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
and going for difficult moves. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
Innovation. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
Don't just copy everyone else. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:38
Judges are impressed when competitors show moves | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
that are different and unique. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
Combining major moves. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
Doing one big move is impressive enough, but if you can go | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
smoothly from one to another, you get even more points. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
Variety. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
Competitors need to show that | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
they've got lots of different skills. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
Speed, power and flow. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
This is how fast you move in the water, | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
how much power is in your turns and how well you connect | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
your moves together. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:11
Handy hint - if you can see lots of spray, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
it's probably a powerful ride. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
Master all of these and you might just become a champ. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:24
Now, take a look at this! | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
Those shots of the planet Jupiter have been sent back earth | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
by Nasa's spacecraft Juno. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
The team of scientists who have been studying them say the pictures | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
have taken their breath away. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
They've been amazed by the storms at the gas giant's poles. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
And in some of the pictures, dozens of hurricanes - | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
each the size of Earth - can be seen clustered together. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
Pretty amazing! | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
That's all from me. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Newsround's back right this afternoon with Jenny at 4:20pm. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
Bye for now. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:57 |
