Afternoon everyone, Ricky here with Wednesday's Newsround. | :00:13. | :00:16.
Today, across the world, people are remembering the Holocaust. | :00:17. | :00:19.
It's a chance for people to think about the millions of Jewish people | :00:20. | :00:22.
and others who were killed by Hitler and his Nazi party during World War | :00:23. | :00:25.
I've been looking back at what happened and hearing | :00:26. | :00:30.
When World War II broke out in 1939, Germany was run by Adolf Hitler | :00:31. | :00:36.
Hitler thought Jewish people were inferior and planned ways | :00:37. | :00:42.
Anti-Jewish laws were passed and windows were smashed and Jewish | :00:43. | :00:48.
people were forced out of their homes. | :00:49. | :00:51.
The Nazis rounded up millions of Jews as well as disabled people, | :00:52. | :00:54.
gay people and other groups that Hitler thought were inferior, | :00:55. | :00:57.
and sent them to prisons called concentration camps. | :00:58. | :01:01.
Families were split up and forced to do hard physical work | :01:02. | :01:04.
It is thought seven out of ten Jews across Europe died. | :01:05. | :01:14.
Some children did escape Nazi Germany. | :01:15. | :01:17.
Ruth was one of those who managed to escape. | :01:18. | :01:20.
Street by street, the Jews were cleared, and any moment | :01:21. | :01:23.
We opened the door to a woman from the British Embassy who had | :01:24. | :01:28.
She brought the entry visa to Britain, train tickets to get | :01:29. | :01:35.
through Germany, through Holland and a ferry to Ramsgate. | :01:36. | :01:41.
Heinz also managed to escape the Holocaust. | :01:42. | :01:45.
Frank, my brother, was in Leeds and he tried to get me a trainee | :01:46. | :01:51.
post and he finally succeeded and we came to Leeds. | :01:52. | :01:56.
We managed to get visas for our parents and they came, | :01:57. | :02:00.
thank God, because four days later war broke out. | :02:01. | :02:04.
Every year people remember those who lost their lives | :02:05. | :02:06.
It helps teach us about these terrible events and make sure | :02:07. | :02:11.
they are not forgotten so they can never happen again. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Well one holocaust survivor has been sharing his story with hundreds | :02:18. | :02:20.
of pupils across the country, via the first ever live stream | :02:21. | :02:26.
I went to meet some of the children watching. | :02:27. | :02:45.
Most of us wore this Jewish star. Rudy Oppenheimer is a survivor of a | :02:46. | :02:53.
concentration camp in Germany. He was just 12 years old when he was | :02:54. | :02:57.
sent to the camp along with his family. We walked for three miles | :02:58. | :03:06.
and we could see the camp. Concentration camps were places | :03:07. | :03:09.
where the Nazis kept people prisoner. The Nazis made conditions | :03:10. | :03:14.
so bad that people would die. People were deliberately killed or allowed | :03:15. | :03:20.
to starve. Rudy's mum and dad were among those who died. People today, | :03:21. | :03:26.
we do not realise how much we have got and for them they were nearly | :03:27. | :03:30.
dying and the lives were almost being taken away for who they were. | :03:31. | :03:36.
On the 15th of April 1945, the British Army liberated the camp. It | :03:37. | :03:42.
makes me feel really sad knowing someone has gone through that at the | :03:43. | :03:46.
same age as me. It is weird to think that 70 years ago people could be so | :03:47. | :03:51.
different and racist to how we are now. Everyone should be treated the | :03:52. | :03:58.
same way. For generations to come, they should know about what happened | :03:59. | :04:02.
and remember it. Nobody should have gone through that and it is | :04:03. | :04:05.
upsetting that so many people had to. As the people who survived the | :04:06. | :04:11.
Holocaust, travelling is not as easy to share the stories. This | :04:12. | :04:15.
interactive talk gives young people the chance to find out what happened | :04:16. | :04:24.
70 years ago. There is a special guide to the Holocaust on our | :04:25. | :04:28.
website. Also online, you can hear more from survivors who were held in | :04:29. | :04:32.
concentration camps. There are lots of other interesting | :04:33. | :04:38.
stories for you to look at and new stories are being added | :04:39. | :04:41.
all the time, so keep coming back. Enjoy the rest of your day Jenny's | :04:42. | :04:44.
back in the morning with more great stories for you so from | :04:45. | :04:48.
the Newsround team. | :04:49. | :04:51. |
