Hi. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13 | |
Whitney here with your top stories
this Saturday afternoon. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Events are being held around
the world to remember | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
the six million Jewish people
and millions of other | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
people who were killed
by the Nazis in the lead up | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
to and during World War II. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Most of the victims were killed
because they belonged to certain | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
racial or religious groups
which the Nazis wanted to wipe out. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
Ricky has this report. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
When World War II broke out
in 1939, Germany was run | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
Hitler thought Jewish
people were inferior, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
and planned ways to kill them. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
Anti-Jewish laws were passed. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Jewish shops had
their windows smashed. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
And Jewish people were forced
out of their homes. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
The Nazis rounded up millions
of Jews, as well as disabled people, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
gay people, and other groups Hitler
thought were inferior, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
and sent them to prisons called
concentration camps. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
Families were split up,
forced to do hard physical work, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
and there was little food. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
Millions of people were
deliberately killed there. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
It is thought nearly seven
out of every ten Jews | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
from across Europe died. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
Some children did manage
to escape Nazi Germany. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Ruth was one of those
who managed to escape. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
Street by street, Jews were cleared. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
And at any moment,
it was probably our turn. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
We opened the door to a woman
from the British Embassy | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
who had braved the curfew. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
She brought the entry visas
to Britain, train tickets | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
to get through Germany,
through Holland, and | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
a ferry to Ramsgate. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
Heinz also managed to
escape the Holocaust. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
There was nowhere to go. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
No country wanted us. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
Frank, my brother, was in Leeds. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
And he tried very hard
to get me a training post. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
And he finally succeeded,
and I came to Leeds. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
We managed to get visas
for our parents, and they came - | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
thank God, because four days later,
war broke out. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Every year, people remember
those who lost their | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
lives in the Holocaust. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
It helps teach us about these
terrible events, and makes sure | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
they are not forgotten
so that they can never happen again. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:22
And to find out more
about the Holocaust and why events | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
are held to remember what happened,
you can head to our guide | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
at Newsround online. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
And if you're upset by this story
or by anything you hear in the news, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
there's loads of help and advice
there too. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Now to football, and it's the fourth
round of the FA Cup this weekend. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
Manchester United were
in action last night | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
against League 2 side Yovil Town. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
The big talking point ahead
of the game was Alexis Sanchez's | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
debut, and he did not disappoint. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
He put in a Man of the Match
performance and set up two goals | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
as United eventually won
the game 4-0. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
There are 12 games on this
afternoon, and Leicester City | 0:02:59 | 0:03:04
are currently 3-0 up
against Peterbourough. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
Now, if you're planning a trip
to the cinema this weekend, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
we've got some inspiration for you. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
Earlier this week, the Oscar
nominations were announced. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
Also called the Academy Awards,
they recognise the best | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
films of the year. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
But, has your favourite
made the cut? | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
Here's Ricky with the details. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
The Oscars - celebrating
the best of Hollywood. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32

Mexican boy who dreams | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
of becoming a musician. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
It's up against The Boss Baby. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48

We'll find out who the winners
are on Sunday the 4th of March. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
Where's my suit and tie?! | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
Thanks, Ricky. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
We have just 11 days
until the Winter Olympics | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
in PyeongChang get under way,
where some of the best athletes | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32

on the ice and snow. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
But if you can't wait till
then, here's a taste | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
of something pretty special. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:38

are competing in the 2018 X Games, | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
which are taking place in Aspen
in the US. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51

snowboarders, snowmobilers
and snowbikers will take | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
over Buttermilk Mountain
for the action sports competition. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
The X Games started over 20 years
ago, in the summertime. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
It wasn't until two years later,
in 1995, that a winter | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
competition was added,
giving men and women the chance | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
to do things like this... | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
This is awesome! | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
These guys are the business. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25
Bring on the Winter Olympics! | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
And they haven't been the only
ones enjoying the snow. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Giant panda Quin Quin could bear-ly
contain her exitement | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
at this year's snowfall. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:35
She even discovered the perfect
slope for a bit of sledging. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
Oh, go on then, one more time... | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41

causing panda-monium?! | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
