Hi, I'm Martin, and this

is a snowy Newsround Special!

First, hundreds of schools have

been shut as the Beast

from the East hits the UK.

Freezing winds from Siberia

in Russia have blown snow

across large parts of the country.

Ricky's been taking a look.

There's been loads

of snow across the UK,

and it's not stopping yet.

In fact, this week's expected to be

the coldest we've had this winter,

with temperatures already dropping

to minus 8.9 Celsius in Hampshire.

Brrr!

Good news if you like building

snowmen, but not if you're trying to

get somewhere.

Hundreds of trains and some

flights have had to be

cancelled, and drivers are being

told to take extra care on the

roads.

The east of England

is the worst affected so far.

In Kent, a snow emergency

has been declared.

Hundreds of schools are shut

because of up to ten

centimetres of snow

in

places including north-east England,

North Wales, Yorkshire and the

south-east of England.

Even Chester Zoo has had to shut.

And if you haven't got

much snow, there's still

time.

The snow's on the move,

heading to the Midlands and central

and eastern Scotland.

By Wednesday, there

could be as much as 20

centimetres of snow on the ground

in some parts of Scotland, eastern

England and Northern Ireland.

And what's in store for Thursday?

You guessed it - more snow!

And it's snowing.

It's snowing for the

first time in five

years.

We're really liking it.

You hope that school's

going to be cancelled.

And we can go out sledging

and make snow angels and

throw snowballs.

Our school's been closed down

because of the snow.

So now, we're going

to be having loads

of fun outside playing.

Yeah!

The snow feels like INAUDIBLE ...

But this one feels crunchy.

I hope it snows more

so I can build a

snowman after school.

I don't remember

having snow like this

before, so it's good.

We built a snowman in

the park, and then we

came here.

It's very unusual to have snow next

to the sea, so we've been

very excited to be school as well.

Well, this is what's been

happening this afternoon,

right outside Newsround HQ.

One minute, the sun's shining -

the next, it all goes

dark as a blizzard hit!

Now, this is my hometown, Glasgow.

All looking calm at the moment,

but yellow warnings for snow

are in place for most of Scotland

from tonight for the next 24 hours.

So, we'll check back

there tomorrow, with up to 20

centimetres of snow expected.

And it's not just the UK

which is being hit by the snow.

Loads of places in

Europe have it, too.

I've been taking a look.

First, let's head to Rome in Italy.

It can be a warm city,

but not right now.

The people there haven't had weather

like this for almost six

years.

This is the famous Coliseum

in Italy's capital.

Gladiators fought there

thousands of years ago,

but now the tourist,

and even a little dog,

are enjoying the snow instead.

Lots of schools have been close.

Next, to Switzerland.

Lake Constance can

be pretty chilly in

winter, but this is something else.

Check out that frozen bike.

In Munich in Germany,

people still went

swimming outside.

You wouldn't catch me doing

the front crawl in this

weather.

Finally, to Bihac in Bosnia,

for the snow is so deep,

soldiers are having

to clear the roads.
