Morning everyone, I'm Martin with your Thursday headlines. Coming up | :00:00. | :00:09.
in the next five: It's school report day, with thousands of you taking | :00:10. | :00:13.
over the BBC's news services. We hear from reporters in the south | :00:14. | :00:17.
west of England on how they've been affected by the winter floods. And | :00:18. | :00:20.
find out why 1D's Niall was looking nervous yesterday. This is | :00:21. | :00:27.
Newsround. But first, on Newsround, you'll have | :00:28. | :00:31.
got used to the likes of Ricky, Leah and me telling you all about the | :00:32. | :00:37.
day's top stories. But today parts BBC News are handing control over to | :00:38. | :00:41.
you. Around 30,000 young reporters from over 1000 schools have been | :00:42. | :00:44.
given the chance to make their own reports on the stories that matter | :00:45. | :00:48.
to them. Robert Blake's Science College have this report on how | :00:49. | :00:51.
their area was affected by the winter floods. | :00:52. | :01:00.
The floods may have stopped making headlines but communities across the | :01:01. | :01:05.
country are still reeling in the aftermath. Earlier this year, parts | :01:06. | :01:10.
of Moorland near Bridgwater was flooded for the first time in its | :01:11. | :01:16.
history, leaving houses devastated and uprooting families from their | :01:17. | :01:20.
homes. This is the first time that 14-year-old Georgina has returned | :01:21. | :01:27.
home since the water subsided. I was in France. A friend contacted me | :01:28. | :01:31.
through social media. She said we had been flooded and everything. It | :01:32. | :01:37.
made me want to go home. Her brother tried to rescue what he could before | :01:38. | :01:41.
emergency services made them leave in the middle of the night. I had | :01:42. | :01:46.
only packed by close the day before. I had my hair dryer in my bag! I put | :01:47. | :01:52.
things in the conservatory thinking they were safe. It seems like a | :01:53. | :01:57.
waste of time. There is no chance of surviving this. When the rivers | :01:58. | :02:05.
burst their banks, over a quarter of the Somerset levels were flooded. | :02:06. | :02:15.
Despite 50,000 sandbags... And 62 pumps operating 24 hours a day, the | :02:16. | :02:19.
force of nature was too strong to hold back. The government may have | :02:20. | :02:25.
pledged more money to flood defences but for families here, it is too | :02:26. | :02:32.
little, too late. This is Robert Blake science college reporting for | :02:33. | :02:35.
BBC News. And in our next bulletin at 08.15 | :02:36. | :02:38.
our school reporters meet two very special movie star guests! You can | :02:39. | :02:42.
check out tonnes more on the School Report website too. | :02:43. | :02:46.
Thousands of bird watchers took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch and | :02:47. | :02:50.
now the results are in. Blue tits had their highest position since the | :02:51. | :02:54.
survey began in 1979. Sightings of starlings also increased but | :02:55. | :02:56.
sparrows are still the most common bird coming in the number one | :02:57. | :02:59.
position. Football now and Celtic secured | :03:00. | :03:02.
their third Scottish title in a row last night, after beating Partick | :03:03. | :03:06.
Thistle 5-1. Neil Lennon's side came out strong, with striker Anthony | :03:07. | :03:10.
Stokes scoring two goals. Amazingly, the Scottish Champions still have | :03:11. | :03:15.
seven games to play this season. Liverpool are back to second in the | :03:16. | :03:18.
Premier League, just one point behind Chelsea, after a 2-1 win over | :03:19. | :03:22.
Sunderland last night. Steven Gerrard opened up the scoring just | :03:23. | :03:25.
before half time with a free-kick, and Daniel Sturridge made sure of | :03:26. | :03:28.
the three points just after the restart. They have got the games in | :03:29. | :03:44.
hand. Obviously, they are out of the Champions League. Chelsea are strong | :03:45. | :03:50.
squad. For us, we are enjoying being up there. We have been improving. | :03:51. | :03:54.
And West Ham were gifted their first win in four games with this bizarre | :03:55. | :03:58.
own goal from Hull's James Chester. Sam Allardyce's men came from a goal | :03:59. | :04:02.
down to win the match but were still booed off by the crowd at the end. | :04:03. | :04:07.
And Andy Murray hasn't been able to defend his Miami Masters title in | :04:08. | :04:10.
Florida. He was knocked out last night at the quarterfinal stage by | :04:11. | :04:15.
world number two, Novak Djokovic. Just enough time to tell you to head | :04:16. | :04:19.
to the website to check out both our special programmes from this week, | :04:20. | :04:22.
yesterday's front line Families, Nel's report on the kids in | :04:23. | :04:24.
Afghanistan's capital Kabul, and while you're there, something a | :04:25. | :04:27.
little different, you can send us your questions for the coach of The | :04:28. | :04:33.
Voice, Ricky Wilson. Normally it would be thousands of | :04:34. | :04:36.
fans queuing up to see him - but this time it was 1d's Niall waiting | :04:37. | :04:40.
in line. Here is he looking a bit nervous as he lined up to meet the | :04:41. | :04:44.
Queen at Buckingham palace. She held the reception to celebrate people | :04:45. | :04:47.
from Ireland who've made a contribution to Britain. Niall said | :04:48. | :04:51.
it was an absolute honour to be invited. That's all from me, | :04:52. | :04:54.
Newsround's back right here in about half an hour. | :04:55. | :05:02. |
