Hi, I'm Martin, with your Newsround
udpate, and we're talking | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
about the freeezing temperatures
that have hit the UK. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:22
But it looks like those
of you in Scotland will be | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
seeing the worst of it. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:28
A red weather warning
has been issued. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Here's more. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
At the moment, most
of the UK looks like this. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
It's cold, it's windy and it's
covered in the white stuff. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Lots of you guys have been
enjoying the snow... | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
THEY SCREAM | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
And in some places, there's
going to be a whole lot more of it. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:45
A red warning has been issued
in Scotland by The Met Office, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
who monitor the weather. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
That's very rare. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
It's the first time in five years
that one's been issued for snow. | 0:00:52 | 0:01:00
It's this area called
the central belt - | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
from Edinburgh to Glasgow -
that's been affected by the warning. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
It means that problems
like power cuts are expected. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
Weather experts want people to take
care to stay safe in the snow. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
At least 400 schools were shut
in Scotland this morning and, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
with more snow to come,
there'll be plenty of time to make | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
snow angels tomorrow. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
My hat came off! | 0:01:18 | 0:01:25
It wasn't just Scotland that saw
schools close today. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
Kids around the country had a bonus
day off because of the bad weather. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
Here's what some of
you have getting up to. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:36
Hi, we're Isla, Jess
and Campbell, and we're from... | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
The Isle of Scotland! | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
And we're off school
today, and we're going... | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
Sledging! | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
THEY SCREAM. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:51
Hi, my name is Harriet,
and I live in Bolton. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
It's freezing cold. | 0:01:59 | 0:01:59
There's only been a little bit
of snow, but I'm lucky | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
because my school's been open. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
It's minus five degrees. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
Today, school is closed,
so I'm going to do snow angels. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:12
And snowballs. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
And snowmen. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:20
We're not at school. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
We're from Edinburgh. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
It's snowing today. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
We went sledging today. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:31
Hi, my name is Abby,
and I'm six years old. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
I'm from Glasgow. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
My school was closed,
so I get to play in the... | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
snow! | 0:02:38 | 0:02:44 | |
I'm going to make a snow angel. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:51
Well, that lot were
wrapped up to stay warm. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
But it's not just the snow
that makes you feel cold | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
on days lilke today -
there's also something called | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
the wind chill factor. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
Sounds interesting. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
So what is it? | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
It is absolutely freezing
at the moment, but did you know | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
that the temperature we feel
is different to the actual | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
temperature of the air around us? | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Now, outside the studios
here at Newsround, it says it's | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
around minus one degrees,
but it also says it | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
feels like minus seven. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
Now, that's because of something
called the wind-chill factor. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:29
Weather experts often call
wind-chill the 'feels | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
like' temperature. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
It's worked out using the air
temperature, humidity - | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
that's how much water vapour
is in the air - and wind speeds. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
All this information is combined
with the science of how heat is lost | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
from the human body. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
So, on a cold, windy day like today,
why does it feel even | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
colder than it really is?! | 0:03:50 | 0:03:57
On a calm day, our
bodies insulate us. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
We give off heat, so we warm
the air around us. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
It's a bit like having a warm
force field, or blanket. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
But when it's cold and windy,
the breeze hits the face and cools | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
the skin to almost the same
temperature as the air. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
It essentially blows the blanket
away, so we feel much colder. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
So, there you have it, wind-chill! | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
Pretty cool, eh? | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
Woo! | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28 | |
It is so windy! Help! | 0:04:28 | 0:04:34
This pair is having a great time
exploring his snowy enclosure at | 0:04:35 | 0:04:42
Chester Zoo. Animals like this tiger
braved the weather to get fresh air | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
and some decided to see what it
tasted like. Why not? | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
