Good morning, I'm Jenny, live with your Newsround update this | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
bank holiday Monday. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
You won't want to miss all this! | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
The UK is battered by Storm Katie, and... | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
why less-than-cute animals are missing out. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
It's Newsround. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
First this morning, Storm Katie has hit the UK, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
leaving thousands of homes without power. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Southern England and Wales have seen the worst of the storms, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
with some flights cancelled because of very strong winds. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
The bad weather is expected to ease later on today. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:42
Now, on the news we often hear about animals that are endangered | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
or facing extinction. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
But have you noticed how most of those animals | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
are usually pretty cute? | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
Well what about the not-so-cute animals? | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
A study has found that ugly animals are struggling to get | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
the same attention. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
Here's Hayley. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
SQUEAKING. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
It's like something from a nightmare. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
A gargoyle face, a crumbling nose, fleshy wings and a loud, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:08
high-pitched squeak! | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
SQUEAKING. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
This is the orange leaf-nosed bat! | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
And it's probably not going to win a beauty contest anytime soon. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
But Australian researchers say this endangered mammal, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
and many others like it, deserve a lot more attention | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
than they're getting. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
A new study has found a lot of animals in Australia are missing | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
out on funding and research, because, well, they're just | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
not pretty enough. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
The study looked at 331 Australian mammals and put them into three | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
categories - the good, the bad and the ugly. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:46
We all know the good ones - the cute animals that people | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
tend to love. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
Creatures like kangaroos, koalas and echidnas. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
The bad ones are often pests - they need to be watched | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
so that they don't harm other animals or the environment. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
They include cats, rabbits and foxes. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
And then there's the ugly. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
They're the animals that often come out at night and we normally don't | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
pay much attention to them. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
Creatures like bats, rats and flying foxes. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
It's this last group that could be in danger of becoming extinct, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
which is a big problem, because every animal plays | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
an important role in the ecosystem. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
For example, small bats can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes an hour. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
So fewer bats could mean more mosquitoes! | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
Scientists think the country's ugly animals deserve just as much | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
attention as the cute and cuddly ones. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
So, Australians are being asked to be citizen scientists - | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
regular people who help keep tabs on the animals living around them. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
Have a look for yourself. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
Up close, you might discover even the so-called ugly ones can actually | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
be pretty cute! | 0:02:53 | 0:03:01
Fancy getting yours hands on your very own virtual-reality system? | 0:03:01 | 0:03:07
Well, deliveries of the long-awaited Oculus Rift headsets are being made | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
to homes around the world this morning. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
The goggles allow users to enter a completley | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
computer generated world. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
They've been available to pre-order since January. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
But with a price tag of ?500, you'll have to start | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
saving your pocket money. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
Next - are you addicted to tech? | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
That's the question the latest Newsround special is asking. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
We set a year 7 class an epic challenge to find out if technology | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
is taking over their lives. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Here's a taster of what to expect. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
Could you handle it? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
We're going to split this class into three different groups. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:47
Now, the first group is going to be able to use technology | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
whenever you want. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
The second group will only be allowed to use technology for two | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
hours a day over the next three days. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
The final group won't be able to use any technology whatsoever | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
for the next three days. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:12
It says here that using tech before bedtime can also affect your sleep. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20
Mum! | 0:04:20 | 0:04:21 | |
Mum! | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24 | |
I can't join in. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
I miss it a lot. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
I don't know what to do with myself, I'm just so bored. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
I haven't missed them as much as I thought I would. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:37
Maybe we should take a step back from it and...go outside. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:47

and adding to your skill set. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15

is it really that important for me to check in on what the latest | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
cat video is? | 0:05:31 | 0:05:32
Probably not. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
Finally, a koala has received a police escort to save it | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
from being injured. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40
This furry little guy wandered onto a busy road in Brisbane, | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
Australia. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
2 motorists captured this footage of the koala taking a casual stroll | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
along the road, stopping all the traffic. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
The police helped shepherd it to safety, staying closeby | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
until the koala climbed up into a tree. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
