sea birds - puffins. In a tiny island off the coast of west Wales, | :00:28. | :00:31. | |
they've come up with some unusual ways to trick and bring the sea | :00:32. | :00:35. | |
birds back to the shore. We sent Nel to find out more. | :00:36. | :00:43. | |
This is Ramsey Island, one of the tie the islands of the Pembrokeshire | :00:44. | :00:49. | |
coast. It is one of the most beautiful places in Wales and is a | :00:50. | :00:53. | |
great place to spot some sea birds off the tall rocky cliffs. One sea | :00:54. | :01:03. | |
bird is hard to find right now, the puffin. It wasn't always the story. | :01:04. | :01:09. | |
Up until the late 1800s, thousands of them lived and bred happily on | :01:10. | :01:13. | |
the island, but that stopped when the rats arrived. It all started | :01:14. | :01:17. | |
with a shipwreck and the rats who abandoned ship swam here to safety. | :01:18. | :01:24. | |
Puffins live in burrows, which made it easy for the rats to sneak in and | :01:25. | :01:29. | |
eat their eggs, so the puffins left. Now the rats have gone, so how do | :01:30. | :01:34. | |
you get puffins back? Conservation groups have been working on it and | :01:35. | :01:38. | |
they have some pretty interesting ideas. With these fake puffins made | :01:39. | :01:43. | |
of plastic, the idea was that birds on the water will see these, there | :01:44. | :01:48. | |
is a busy colony there and they will go up. Unfortunately, it didn't | :01:49. | :01:52. | |
work. We came across and colleagues in Northern Ireland who had speaker | :01:53. | :01:59. | |
