We find out about the battle that was supposed to end World War One. | :00:08. | :00:23.
But first - massive news in the world of football. | :00:24. | :00:26.
Roy Hodgson has resigned as England manager after his side were beaten | :00:27. | :00:29.
2-1 by Iceland in the European Championships last night. | :00:30. | :00:34.
The loss means England are now out of the European Championships. | :00:35. | :00:38.
Their loss to iceland, the lowest ranked team in the Euros | :00:39. | :00:41.
- will go down as one of the biggest shocks in international football | :00:42. | :00:44.
Jenny was watching in france and sent us this report | :00:45. | :00:54.
on what happened on a dramatic night in Nice. | :00:55. | :00:57.
Roy Hodgson's said where expected to win against a nation | :00:58. | :00:59.
who have a population just 330,000, roughly the same size as Leicester. | :01:00. | :01:05.
England started well and took the lead within five minutes. | :01:06. | :01:07.
Wayne Rooney scoring from the penalty spot. | :01:08. | :01:09.
And Rooney scores! CHEERING | :01:10. | :01:15.
But just 34 seconds later, Iceland stunned England | :01:16. | :01:19.
Sigurdsson scoring with this effort, following poor defending. | :01:20. | :01:25.
In the 19th minute, Sigthorsson shot from just inside the box and scored. | :01:26. | :01:33.
Joe Hart perhaps should have done better. | :01:34. | :01:40.
In the second half, England dominated the game but just couldn't | :01:41. | :01:42.
In the end, they were outfought, out-thought and outdone | :01:43. | :01:46.
Iceland held on the famous victory, the first time they have ever beaten | :01:47. | :01:54.
Then, straight after the final whistle, this happened. | :01:55. | :02:01.
My contract was always up after the Euros. | :02:02. | :02:07.
So, now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress | :02:08. | :02:09.
of this young, hungry and extremely talented group. | :02:10. | :02:22.
Well done, Iceland. They go on to Paris. | :02:23. | :02:32.
On the July first, 1916, British soldiers were sent to fight | :02:33. | :02:37.
a battle that was supposed to finish World War One. | :02:38. | :02:39.
But, by the end of the Battle of the Somme, more than a million | :02:40. | :02:42.
Even now people can't agree on whether it was the right decision | :02:43. | :02:47.
100 years ago, Britain and its allies were | :02:48. | :02:52.
For two long years, both sides slogged it out, | :02:53. | :02:54.
firing at each other from trenches like this one. | :02:55. | :03:02.
The British were fighting here and the Germans were over there. | :03:03. | :03:04.
After all that time, no one was making any progress. | :03:05. | :03:09.
So, the people in charge of the British Army came up | :03:10. | :03:14.
They hit the Germans as hard as they could with artillery | :03:15. | :03:19.
The plant was from there... They were wrong and the Germans were | :03:20. | :03:32.
waiting. They weren't able to take them as planned. The soldiers were | :03:33. | :03:39.
met with a wall of bombs and bullets. 20,000 were killed and | :03:40. | :03:43.
40,000 were wounded. In just the first day. Many were just teenagers. | :03:44. | :03:49.
They saw it as a big adventure but the reality was very different. Lots | :03:50. | :03:53.
of death and things young people should never experience. Even though | :03:54. | :03:57.
tens of thousands of soldiers were being killed in these fields, the | :03:58. | :04:00.
Army commanders decided the soldiers must fight on. The result? Even more | :04:01. | :04:08.
lives lost. It had a huge effect back home. Groups of men from the | :04:09. | :04:13.
same towns and cities volunteered in huge amounts of people were lost. | :04:14. | :04:17.
With the news coming through that thousands were not coming back home, | :04:18. | :04:21.
it was only a matter of time before families were expecting a knock on | :04:22. | :04:25.
her door to inform them they had lost somebody. In the four months | :04:26. | :04:29.
that it lasted, more than 1 million soldiers died on both sides. People | :04:30. | :04:33.
in charge said it had to be done to win the war. But others argue that | :04:34. | :04:37.
so many young men should never have died. Even today, you can see the | :04:38. | :04:41.
results of the Battle all around us in the UK. In your hometown, there | :04:42. | :04:48.
is properly a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died on the | :04:49. | :04:51.
Somme. It was a battle of it changed Britain. They will be hearing more | :04:52. | :04:55.
from Martin and France throughout this week. I'm back right here in | :04:56. | :04:59.
half an hour. I buy. | :05:00. | :05:03. |
