Now a special report from the Newsround team about how kids are | :00:00. | :00:08.
coping in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. The biggest storm | :00:09. | :00:13.
ever. Devastating lives all across the islands. I have come to the | :00:14. | :00:18.
Philippines, to find out for Newsround how children are coping | :00:19. | :00:22.
for Typhoon Haiyan. Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the | :00:23. | :00:26.
Philippines almost three weeks ago. Winds as strong as 200 miles an hour | :00:27. | :00:33.
tore homes apart, piece, by piece. Thousands of people were killed. | :00:34. | :00:39.
Millions more left homeless. The islands of Lete and Cebu were | :00:40. | :00:48.
hardest-hit. I travelled there to see how the children were dealing | :00:49. | :00:52.
with the disaster. We have arrived in Cebu, it is good to see that | :00:53. | :00:58.
people are getting back to work. Kids are going to school, shops are | :00:59. | :01:03.
open. People are selling food on market stalls, but a few kilometres | :01:04. | :01:06.
from here it is a different story. Although the area was not hit badly, | :01:07. | :01:11.
we are heading to meet some people doing their bit to help. | :01:12. | :01:16.
This is the big estuary house in Cebu. It is where the supplies come | :01:17. | :01:22.
in. People bag them up and they get sent to the | :01:23. | :01:30.
in. People bag them up and they get is open 24 hours a day. And you will | :01:31. | :01:37.
notice one thing, all of the volunteers are children or | :01:38. | :01:40.
teenagers. How long are you working here tonight, you have been at | :01:41. | :01:43.
school today, haven't you? Yes, we have been at school for at least | :01:44. | :01:48.
half a day. Two hours are staying here. It is our pleasure. We want to | :01:49. | :01:55.
give the time for those in need. You can give a better help to them. | :01:56. | :02:01.
Travel north into the disaster zone, I begin to see the damage brought by | :02:02. | :02:06.
the typhoon. While it seems that the emergency is over, people still | :02:07. | :02:10.
don't have electricity. You may be able to hear the sound of the | :02:11. | :02:15.
generator in the background, you hear it all the time here, but I | :02:16. | :02:20.
have come to see how the children are getting back on their feet. | :02:21. | :02:24.
Chris runs a school here, badly damaged by the wind. They are | :02:25. | :02:28.
worried they may have to tear down part of the school. I asked | :02:29. | :02:33.
countries to show me around. This would have been a classroom. | :02:34. | :02:38.
It would accommodate so many children? 80 students. | :02:39. | :02:46.
All of the equipment was damaged? Everything damaged. | :02:47. | :02:48.
It must be frustrating. How do you feel about it when you step into the | :02:49. | :02:52.
room and see all of this. This is the room where I cried... | :02:53. | :02:57.
You know. I don't know how to... Me and my family we don't know how to | :02:58. | :03:02.
reconstruct this again but we are trying our best. | :03:03. | :03:04.
What is happening to the children that come here for a class every | :03:05. | :03:08.
day? Where are they going? In the new building? Yes. | :03:09. | :03:12.
The worry for the children is that we are not sure if they can give | :03:13. | :03:17.
them some assurance that we can go on. We know that we can rebuild the | :03:18. | :03:22.
school. When I speak to the children here, | :03:23. | :03:24.
although their families are When I speak to the children here, | :03:25. | :03:28.
unharmed by the Typhoon Haiyan, they are upset that their houses and | :03:29. | :03:30.
school have been damaged. are upset that their houses and | :03:31. | :03:34.
hope for the future. So, how do you feel when you come | :03:35. | :03:39.
back to your school and you see it like this? My tears are about to | :03:40. | :03:44.
flow. I see the damage of the school. It is not OK. Then I was | :03:45. | :03:50.
thinking how we can continue our studies but... It is already gone. | :03:51. | :03:56.
Our roof was gone. It was blown way way by the Typhoon Haiyan. When we | :03:57. | :04:02.
came ba to our house it was all gone. My mother and father and I | :04:03. | :04:09.
looked for some roof to use for us to shelter from the rain. | :04:10. | :04:19.
Where are you staying now? We are in our house with a temporary roof. | :04:20. | :04:25.
It is OK. It's hard, isn't it? Really hard. | :04:26. | :04:28.
Is it important for you to come to school? Yes it is. Yes. In school | :04:29. | :04:37.
maybe I can earn after I graduate in the #2350u67. | :04:38. | :04:41.
-- in the future. I hope so. I hope to help my family return. | :04:42. | :04:44.
What do you want to do, when you think about graduating from school, | :04:45. | :04:49.
what do you hope to do? I will work hard and then I will help my family | :04:50. | :04:55.
and to pay back what they have done for us. | :04:56. | :04:57.
Everything that they have done for us. | :04:58. | :05:02.
Can I say a message? Yes. We lost our house but we never lost | :05:03. | :05:08.
our hope. This is where the action is really | :05:09. | :05:12.
taking place. Countries from all over the world | :05:13. | :05:15.
are working together to make sure that the vital aid gets to the | :05:16. | :05:19.
people that need it the most. Over there is the Hercules. And the Royal | :05:20. | :05:25.
Australian Air Force are about to head off to Tacloban with vital | :05:26. | :05:29.
supplies. So, tell us what you are doing here? | :05:30. | :05:35.
I'm here as part of the security attachment for the Australian C | :05:36. | :05:39.
130s. How is the atmosphere when you take | :05:40. | :05:42.
the aid to the affected areas? People are smiling, helping, running | :05:43. | :05:47.
around, trying to get things done. It has been really surprising and | :05:48. | :05:53.
I'm impressed by the people here. The Philippines has suffered a huge | :05:54. | :05:58.
disaster. Its changed people's lives forever, but the world has | :05:59. | :06:02.
responded. People here tell me that they are thankful for the help, but | :06:03. | :06:07.
this is just the beginning. It will take a lot longer for | :06:08. | :06:08. |
