Good morning - I'm Ricky.

0:00:130:00:15

First today, you'll probably

have heard about the big

0:00:150:00:17

question of the moment -

how can we cut the amount of plastic

0:00:170:00:20

we use and throw away?

0:00:200:00:23

More than eight million tonnes

of plastic ends up in the world's

0:00:230:00:26

oceans each year.

0:00:260:00:27

That's a truckload every minute!

0:00:270:00:29

So, what's the problem with plastic?

0:00:290:00:32

Martin's been finding out...

0:00:320:00:39

These are trash islands in the

Caribbean. It looks like a stretch

0:00:400:00:44

of land but it's floating rubbish

like plastic bags, spoons and

0:00:440:00:49

bottles. They are created by

currents in the ocean. Sadly, this

0:00:490:00:56

is not the only place in the world

where plastic pollution is a

0:00:560:01:01

problem.

Plastic is all around the

planet on every shoreline, it's even

0:01:010:01:05

down to The Deep ocean, places we

have never visited, we go there for

0:01:050:01:09

the first time and our rubbish has

beaten us there.

Back in the day,

0:01:090:01:14

milk and fizzy drinks used to be

bought in glass bottles and food

0:01:140:01:17

would be wrapped in paper. Now,

plastic is lots of things we use

0:01:170:01:22

every day and it is really useful.

300 million tonnes are produced each

0:01:220:01:27

year, but 40% of that is. We will

only use once before it's thrown

0:01:270:01:33

away, like straws, crisp packets,

bottles and carrier bags. How

0:01:330:01:46

bottles and carrier bags. How does

plastic end up in the ocean?

Some of

0:01:470:01:48

it is blown in, lots of it comes

from rivers, some can come a long

0:01:480:01:51

way, some from ships at sea, Summers

left by tourists on beaches. Some

0:01:510:01:53

enters by the toilet. There's a

whole range of ways it can get

0:01:530:01:56

there, the problem is once it's

there that is where it will stay.

0:01:560:01:59

Scientists are warning that within

the next 30 years the amount of

0:01:590:02:03

plastic in our oceans could outweigh

the fish. Each year, 100,000 animals

0:02:030:02:08

in the sea are killed by plastic. It

can hurt on track them and it they

0:02:080:02:13

can also mistake it for food. One in

three sea turtles and 90% of sea

0:02:130:02:18

birds have eaten it. It ends up on

our dinner table, are we eating

0:02:180:02:27

plastic as well?

We recently looked

at fish collected locally, of 500

0:02:270:02:30

fish we found a third had small

quantities of plastic in their gut.

0:02:300:02:35

It's not a cause for concern for

eating their special, the quantities

0:02:350:02:39

are quite small, unless we do

something about it the quantities

0:02:390:02:42

fish, birds and will increase.

There

are lots of groups trying to help

0:02:420:02:48

tackle plastic pollution and the

government is promising to do more.

0:02:480:02:50

But there are ways we can all help

right now. Here are Richard's top

0:02:500:02:56

tips. Make sure you always throw

your rubbish in the bin. If you

0:02:560:03:00

don't need something, don't use it.

And of course, the cycle when you

0:03:000:03:04

can.

0:03:040:03:05

If you want to know more about how

plastic affects our planet head over

0:03:050:03:09

to Newsround online where we've got

a full guide.

0:03:090:03:12

Next, are teen romances

bad for your grades?

0:03:120:03:14

Well, that's what one headteacher

in North Wales thinks,

0:03:140:03:16

so much so that he wrote

to his pupils telling

0:03:160:03:18

them to avoid them.

0:03:180:03:23

Well, let's hear what some

Year 10s think ...

0:03:230:03:30

I don't think teachers should be

allowed to tell you what you want to

0:03:300:03:33

do because it's your private life

and you should be able to do what

0:03:330:03:36

you want.

If you have a boyfriend or

girlfriend, you won't be able to

0:03:360:03:43

think straight, but you could be the

same about friends or family

0:03:430:03:46

problems.

Situations where people

are not revising or doing the work.

0:03:460:03:55

MIB on everyone else's mind whether

you will break up so that would

0:03:550:03:58

cause a lot of drama between not

just the people involved in the

0:03:580:04:01

relationship but everybody around

them.

It affects their graves

0:04:010:04:06

personally, then that could be fair

enough, but to say it to a whole

0:04:060:04:10

group of people when you don't know

if it's affecting them or not, I

0:04:100:04:13

think it's on fire.

What you do in

your free time is up to you, if you

0:04:130:04:18

choose to revise and do the studying

menu will get the best grades, it's

0:04:180:04:22

up to you what you choose to do.

0:04:220:04:25

We've been asking for your views

on this one and loads

0:04:250:04:27

of you have been voting

on the Newsround website.

0:04:300:04:33

Finally - move over,

Wall-E , there are some

0:04:330:04:35

new cleaning droids in town.

0:04:350:04:38

These four dirt-busting bots

were put through their paces

0:04:380:04:40

at a train station in Germany.

0:04:400:04:42

They raced against each other

as part of a contest to choose

0:04:420:04:45

a new cleaning machine to keep

the German stations spick and span.

0:04:450:04:49

I think this guy needs

to get a wriggle on!

0:04:490:04:53

That's all for now.

0:04:530:04:54

We're back at 8.15 with those big

school romance vote results.

0:04:540:04:56

Don't miss it.
