Welcome to Newsround everyone. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
Leah here today with some of this: | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
The new 12-sided ?1 coin. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
And my school's been taken over by baby chicks. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
This is Newsround. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:19
So, first, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, says he's doing | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
everything he can to help thousands of steel workers | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
who could lose their jobs. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
It's after the company - Tata Steel - said it wants to sell | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
off its UK factories because they're not making money. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Ricky's been to Port Talbot in South Wales, home of Britain's | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
biggest steelworks, to find out more. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
It's quite huge. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
Big. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52 | |
Yeah, big. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
Is it steam or smoke? | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
Both. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59 | |
Wherever you are in Port Talbot, it's not very hard to miss | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
the steelworks. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
There they are behind me. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
You can see it from pretty much all over the town and kids have been | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
telling me today that they would be pretty sad if it was to close. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
Alfie and Lily your dad works at the steelworks, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
he has worked there for six years, hasn't he? | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Yes. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20 | |
What do you think would happen if it was to close? | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
Well, I would miss seeing the ships going in and out. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:28
What is it like having a dad to works at the steel works, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
is it quite cool? | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
Yes, it is cool. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
It is a really nice place to live you have the beach there and then | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
you have the mountains, where I live, which is like my back | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
garden, so it is nice to explore different types of sceneries. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
How a big deal is the steel works for this town? | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
It is something major because there are so many jobs | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
there and so many of my friend's parents work there and it means | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
so much to them, if they keep their jobs. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
It is a really big deal. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
I know loads of people, loads of neighbours and everything | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
working in the area. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
It would affect them. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:09
They all have children. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
If it closes they will all be out of work. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
It it was to close would it be quite sad? | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Yes, it would be quite bad for the country, the economy. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
People would lose jobs. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
Could you imagine Port Talbot without the factory? | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
No. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:22 | |
I can't. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
No. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24 | |
Definitely not. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Now, guys, you might be about to tuck into your tea soon. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
But do you know much about what's on your plate? | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
Well, some farmers went to one school in North London to help out | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
kids there, including Tia. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
Chickens. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:39
Scarecrows. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
And a wooden cow. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
Today we are finding out where our food comes from. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
This farm workshop has arrived at school to give us classes | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
on planting fruit and veg. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
Discovering how to grow grain and what foods they are found in. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:55
We are finding out how chickens live and how to keep | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
them happy, too. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
And a happy chicken equals a happy egg. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
All day my school has been taking part in workshops, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
where we have been learning more about what farmers do and what tools | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
they use to produce food for us. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
You can even milk a cow. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
OK, it's a wooden one, but you get the idea. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:23
This all may look very a-moos-ing but there is serious | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
learning going on. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
We have come here today to tell you what we do on our home | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
farms in Wales. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
We are excited to be here to tell you how we produce food | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
which you guys will hopefully eat. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
It is important you know where it comes from, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
because you need to understand what you are eating | 0:03:39 | 0:03:45
and you need to understand the health benefits it can give. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
There is loads to get stuck into. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:49
This little mill is used to grind grain to make flour. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
One of the workshops these guys are doing is learning how | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
to build a scarecrow. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
That's really important for farmers because if birds come they get | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
scared of the scarecrows and it protects their crops | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
and all the food that they need to grow. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:14
Although farming is not something I would want to do myself | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
when I grow up, these workshops have definitely taught me about the food | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
I eat and where it comes, from which I think is really | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
important for all of us to appreciated. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
And any excuse to hold a baby chick is good for me, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Thank | 0:04:34 | 0:04:34 | |
Thank you | 0:04:34 | 0:04:34
Thank you Tia. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
All of our stories are online, including the new ?1 coin | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
with 12 sides that will be in use next year. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
But you'd need nearly ?3 million of them for these - | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
the world's most expensive trainers. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
They're gold and diamond-encrusted. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
But not your thing? | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Well, how about finding out which bird was the MOST spotted | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
in schools this year? | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
That's all waiting online for you. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
But for now, that's all from Newsround, we're back tomorrow. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
Bye. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02 |
