Over the last week, riots have turned streets in some of England's

:00:10.:00:14.

biggest cities into battlegrounds. Some of the people taking part have

:00:14.:00:19.

been as young as 11 or 12. It has been a strange and in some places

:00:20.:00:23.

very scary week. I have been reporting on the trouble for

:00:23.:00:27.

Newsround. Nothing seemed to have calmed down, I want to understand

:00:28.:00:37.
:00:38.:00:38.

more about what has been going on, and why. -- now things seem to have

:00:38.:00:41.

calmed down. Saturday on Tottenham in north

:00:41.:00:47.

London, violence breaks out after a peaceful protest about a local man,

:00:47.:00:50.

Mark Duggan, being shot dead by police who were trying to arrest

:00:50.:00:55.

him. It starts with throwing things at the police, and ends in

:00:55.:01:04.

distraction. -- destruction. That is the biggest building to go up in

:01:04.:01:08.

flames in Tottenham. It used to be a carpet showroom with flats on the

:01:08.:01:11.

top, and more than 20 families had to be rescued before the building

:01:11.:01:16.

was completely destroyed. It still smells like a bonfire here. It is

:01:16.:01:21.

already clear that this isn't about protesting. It is robbery and

:01:21.:01:26.

vandalism. Over the next couple of days, the violence spreads to other

:01:26.:01:31.

parts of London. Looters, many of them teenagers, some younger,

:01:31.:01:36.

smashed shop windows and steel trainers and televisions. Let's get

:01:36.:01:41.

some watches. It didn't stop at theft. The looters set fire to the

:01:41.:01:46.

shops they had robbed. Londoners had not seen flames like these

:01:46.:01:49.

since the Second World War. Over the next few days, London was

:01:49.:01:55.

quieter, but other places were hit. Parts of Birmingham and Manchester

:01:55.:01:58.

were the worst affected. There were outbreaks in Leeds, Liverpool,

:01:58.:02:04.

Nottingham, Leicester, Gloucester and Bristol. Many of those involved

:02:04.:02:09.

have been arrested. Nearly 1,000 in London, more than half of them

:02:09.:02:16.

under 20 years old, and hundreds in other cities. The violence has left

:02:16.:02:21.

people without businesses and homes. This man is now homeless. He and

:02:21.:02:25.

his mum were in their flat when the shop below was set on fire, they

:02:25.:02:31.

have lost everything. I don't understand why people do this.

:02:31.:02:34.

the past couple of days, we have shown you what the streets have

:02:34.:02:38.

been looking like, but I want to show you the inside of a shop that

:02:38.:02:43.

has been smashed up. This is a baby shop. Everything has been taken

:02:43.:02:47.

down, everything has been smashed, the till desk was totally pulled

:02:47.:02:52.

out and the shop is a complete tip. Some people have been heard, and

:02:52.:02:56.

lots have been really frightened. There were helicopters going over

:02:56.:03:02.

my house, I could hear a load of smashing noises on the cards. I was

:03:02.:03:08.

getting quite scared. -- the cars. After the riots, the clean-up. You

:03:08.:03:12.

might think there are troublemakers everywhere, but in reality, the

:03:12.:03:17.

chaos has been caused by a tiny minority of people. Volunteers from

:03:17.:03:21.

London to Manchester have been on the streets, helping to clean up

:03:21.:03:25.

the mess, including these kids in Ealing in west London. We saw it on

:03:25.:03:31.

the news, we wanted to help out. It is our home town here. I want to be

:03:31.:03:36.

helpful. We shouldn't put it to the people that own the shops, we

:03:36.:03:40.

should help as well, because there is loads of damage that has

:03:40.:03:44.

happened. I went back to Tottenham where the trouble started. This

:03:45.:03:49.

leisure centre has been converted into a base to help families whose

:03:49.:03:52.

homes have burnt down. The donations keep coming. This is

:03:52.:03:56.

where people who have lost their homes can come to pick up essential

:03:56.:04:01.

supplies like bedding, clothes, food and even toys. How has it made

:04:01.:04:06.

you feel, to see Tottenham going through this? I was very sad. They

:04:06.:04:11.

don't deserve to lose their homes. Over nothing. Seeing these people

:04:11.:04:15.

working together to help the victims of the riots made me wonder

:04:15.:04:20.

why a few turn to violence. There have been serious riots in

:04:20.:04:25.

Tottenham and other places before, in the 1980s. These were largely to

:04:25.:04:28.

do with race. Black people in particular thought the police

:04:28.:04:33.

treated them unfairly. Things have changed a lot since then. The

:04:33.:04:36.

police make much more effort to talk to different communities,

:04:36.:04:41.

though some people around here say they still don't trust them. This

:04:41.:04:45.

time, the trouble across parts of England has involved people of all

:04:45.:04:49.

races, and they are certainly not protesting against anything in

:04:49.:04:53.

particular. Listen to these guys in Manchester, who didn't want to

:04:53.:04:57.

appear on camera. Why are you going to miss the opportunity to get free

:04:57.:05:01.

stuff? I am not bothered, I will keep doing this every day until I

:05:01.:05:05.

get caught. Nothing is going to get happened to me, I won't get

:05:05.:05:09.

grounded, I might get shouted at but that is it. The fact that so

:05:09.:05:13.

much of the draw has been pointless vandalism means most politicians

:05:13.:05:18.

are reluctant to see things like poverty as a cause for all of this,

:05:18.:05:22.

of and certainly not an excuse. see some of the poorest people in

:05:22.:05:26.

the world, who have nothing. They are not in this country, often,

:05:26.:05:29.

they are brought in Africa and different places. They are not

:05:29.:05:34.

behaving like this. I grew up poor, just down the road from here. You

:05:34.:05:39.

have to know the difference between right and wrong. Stealing is wrong.

:05:39.:05:43.

These Tottenham kids definitely know that. They have been really

:05:43.:05:47.

upset by what has happened to their area. Do you really think they are

:05:47.:05:50.

protesting about the killing of that man, or just taking the

:05:50.:05:55.

opportunity to steal? Mostly, people are saying it is just to do

:05:55.:06:01.

it for fun, and it was the opportunity. They are not using

:06:01.:06:05.

their brains, they are just robbing for the fun of it. Why do you think

:06:05.:06:09.

these guys are feeling -- are not feeling bad about the people they

:06:09.:06:15.

are hurting? Because everyone else is doing it. They just feel like it

:06:15.:06:20.

is OK. Most of the people are young. Bake just want a sense of

:06:20.:06:25.

involvement. -- they just want. Maybe most people have been getting

:06:25.:06:29.

involved simply out of greed. completely stealing and vandalism,

:06:29.:06:37.

it is not writing in any political sense, there are no ideas. They are

:06:37.:06:40.

not protesting about one thing. they are interested in what they

:06:41.:06:44.

can wear, what they can prove to their friends, that they are

:06:44.:06:48.

wearing something better than their neighbours. People are now debating

:06:49.:06:53.

the deeper reasons behind why this Rick -- this trouble has happened.

:06:53.:06:58.

They are blaming a range of things like parenting, the gap between

:06:58.:07:03.

rich and poor, or two people joining gangs and using mobiles to

:07:03.:07:07.

spread trouble. What everyone agrees on is that those involved

:07:07.:07:10.

have to be caught and punished. The police keep releasing pictures of

:07:10.:07:14.

those caught on camera and many are already going to court. Over the

:07:14.:07:20.

past week, we have seen some terrible Pavia -- behaviour from a

:07:20.:07:23.
