That's a great question. Why does our heart beat?

I love to make my drum beat, but our heartbeat is even more brilliant.

Today's question is, "Why does our heart beat?"

Our hearts are important for every part of our brilliant bodies

so all of the Neurons will be helping me today.

Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.

Travis likes karate and Eilidh likes meerkats.

But they both want to know why our heart beats,

so today for one day only, Travis and Eilidh become the experimenters!

-Hi, Guys.

-BOTH: Hi, Nina.

Welcome to my science lab. Come on in.

Now you asked why does our heart beat, which is a great question.

Why do you want to know?

Because when I hug my mummy I can hear her heart beat.

-And we want to know why it beats.

-Oh, I love a good hug, don't you?

BOTH: Yes!

And our heart is an important part of our brilliant body

so we should find out why it beats.

For our first experiment, we're going to use our senses.

ALL: Woo-hoo! A senses experiment. We're ready, Nina.

Can you show me where you think your heart is in your body?

-It's here.

-Here.

-Very good. You're right.

Our heart is in the middle of our chest a little bit to the left.

Now you're probably used to seeing pretend hearts like this one,

but a real heart is quite different.

Have a look at this model and describe it for me.

-It's got tubes.

-Yes.

-And they're like veins.

-Yeah, they are like veins.

We've got tubes going in and tubes coming out.

And there's also some hollow spaces inside that are called chambers.

As Eilidh was saying earlier, we can sometimes hear our heartbeat

so let's put these on.

Hear a heartbeat? Sounds like a job for me, Nina.

It certainly is, Belle. This is called a stethoscope.

Doctors use them to listen to our hearts beating.

Just press the round bit to your chest and listen.

BA-BOOM BA-BOOM

-Can you hear your heart beating?

-BOTH: Yes.

Wow! Nina's heartbeat sounds like a drum beating.

Ba-boom! Ba-boom! Ba-boom!

It does, Belle.

Let's see if we can make a noise that sounds like our heartbeat.

Ba-boom! Ba-boom! Ba-boom!

ALL: Ba-boom! Ba-boom! Ba-boom!

OK, so let's take our stethoscopes off. Wow!

So we have used our senses to see what a heart looks like.

And to feel and hear our heart beating.

But we still don't know why our heart beats.

So to find out I think we need to visit a place where people

have lots of fun.

Let's go, experimenters!

BOTH: Yeah!

Where do you think we're going today?

Nina said it's a place where people have lots of fun.

Maybe it's a chocolate factory! That would be lots of fun for me.

It doesn't look like a factory, Bud.

Sharpen your senses, Neurons, we're here.

And Nina feels very excited.

So, experimenters, you asked why does our heart beat.

To help answer that question, I've brought you to this fun park

to find out about the really important job our heart does.

Our heart helps move blood all around our brilliant bodies.

So it sends blood all the way up to our heads,

all the way down to our toes, and all around everywhere in between.

-Now, do you see this White Water ride?

-BOTH: Yes, Nina.

Well, we're going to pretend that the water moving around

this ride is like the blood moving around inside our bodies.

And unfortunately we're going to have to...

..have a go on the ride!

-BOTH: Yeah!

-Follow me!

SCREAMING AND LAUGHING

Oh, my word! Oh, dear! It feels very fa-a-a-ast!

SCREAMING

That was brilliant!

-Did you enjoy that, guys?

-BOTH: Yes! It was great!

But how does the water move around the ride?

That's a great question, Eilidh.

Finding out the answer will also tell us

more about why our heart beats.

Over there in the middle of the ride is a big machine called a pump.

It pushes the water round the White Water ride.

Our heart is our body's pump.

But instead of moving water,

the heart pumps to move blood around inside us.

That's what our heart is doing when it beats inside our chest.

-Watch.

-SHE LAUGHS

So, every time our heart beats it moves blood around inside us.

This happens again and again. Our hearts are always beating

and always pumping blood all the way around our bodies.

The blood keeps going round and round inside us all day

and all night.

Like the water goes round and round the ride.

That's right, Ollie. But how does this work?

Let's head back to the lab for one final experiment.

BOTH: Yes!

Now here is a model of the body.

If you squeeze this pretend heart with your hand, just like this,

it pumps the red water inside the tubes around the body.

And our real body has lots of little tubes inside it too.

And the heart pumps blood through them to all the places it's needed.

Eilidh, would you like to have a go at pumping the heart?

Travis, watch carefully and tell us what's happening inside the tubes.

Off you go, Eilidh.

What can you see happening, Travis?

The glitter is coming up

and the blood's coming through the tubes.

Well spotted.

Remember we're pretending that the red water inside the tubes

is blood inside our bodies

being pumped around by our hearts.

And the water has bits in it, glittery bits,

because our blood also has things in it.

Our blood carries important things like the oxygen we breathe in

and good stuff from the food we eat.

Remember when we listened to our hearts earlier?

Well, let's do that again

Ooh!

-BA-BOOM BA-BOOM

-So, listen.

Ba-boom! Ba-boom! Ba-boom!

-I can hear, "Ba-boom, ba-boom," can you?

-Yes.

-Yes.

Let's see if anything happens to our heartbeat

when we do some exercises.

OK, now let's check our hearts again. Oh, in my ears.

-Are they beating slower or faster?

-Faster.

-Faster.

-Yeah!

Your heart's beating MUCH faster now, Nina.

-Ba-boom, ba-boom. Ba-boom, ba-boom!

So, when we run around or do any kind of exercise

our bodies need extra supplies of oxygen

to help release energy from our food,

so our heart beats a lot faster

to pump the blood around the body more quickly,

delivering more oxygen.

You asked, "Why does our heart beat?", I think we've answered it.

We discovered that our heart beats

because it's pumping blood around inside us

to the tops of our heats, the tips of our toes

and everywhere in between. That's an important job

because our blood carries good things that our bodies need.

Like oxygen we breathe and good stuff from food we eat.

When we exercise our bodies need more of these good things

so our heart has to work harder to pump the blood around inside us

even faster.

That's why we feel and hear our heart beating

when we've been running around being active.
