OLD JACK HUMS A TUNE | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
You know what, Salty? Today is not just any old day. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
It's Christmas Day! | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
HE WHISTLES AND LAUGHS | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Hey, you know what? | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
I think it might be a good idea to get everybody together | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
for a good old Christmas sing-song - what do you reckon? | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
-Busy, busy! -Oh, look. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
There's Miss Bowline-Hitch. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Shall we go and ask her to join in? | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Come on. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
Oh, Miss Bowline-Hitch - Merry Christmas! | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Merry Christmas, Jack, and to you, Salty. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
I'm afraid I must dash, I'm busy-busy! | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
Listen, I was going to ask | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
if you fancied a sing-song tonight. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
-Oh. -Hm? | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
No - I am sorry. There's no sing-song on my list. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:24
Must dash - busy-busy! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Right - do you want a little push? There you are! | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
So...never mind, Salty. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Plenty more fish in the sea. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
Come on, girl. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
-Hello, Emily. -Oh! Hello, Jack! Happy Christmas. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
And a Happy Christmas to you, Emily, yes. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
You look busy. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
Oh, I'm just packing up some ice-creams and lollipops | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
to take to the hospital. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Oh, that is kind of you, Emily. Isn't that kind, Salty? | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
Well, some people have to stay in hospital during the holidays, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
so I thought I'd give them a treat. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
Yeah, yeah - listen, will you be back tonight? | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
I thought it would be nice | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
if we could all have a little sing-song together. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
I'm sorry, Jack. I won't be back in time. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
But I hope you have a lovely sing-song. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
-Bye-bye! -Bye-bye. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Oh, well - two down, Salty. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
Never mind. We'll keep trying. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
Hup! Come on. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
BELL JINGLES | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
-Ha! Captain Periwinkle. Ahoy there. -Oh, ahoy there! | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
Christmas at the ready, sir. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
Tinsel and holly bedecked on all sides. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
-So, where's that daughter of yours? -Shelly? | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
She asked me to look after things while she's away. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
I've closed for Christmas | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
and I'm going to the cliff tops to keep watch | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
in case I see three ships go sailing by. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Oh. I don't suppose you'll be back by tonight, then, will you? | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
I was hoping to have a sing-song with everybody, all together. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
-I'm sorry, old friend, but I promised to keep watch all night. -Oh. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
-Never mind. Sing well, sailor! Sing loud! -Yeah... | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
-Farewell! -Yeah - farewell to you, Captain. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
Oh, dear. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Huh! Ah! | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
-Fingers! -Toes! | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
THEY LAUGH | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
-Hello, you two! You look busy. -We are. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
We've got plenty of work to do today. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
What, delivering fish? It's Christmas Day! | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
I know, but not everyone eats turkey on Christmas Day. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
We're delivering these to... | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
-Filey. -Saltburn. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
Eh? | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46 | |
-Saltburn. -Filey. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
-The village down the road. -Oh. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
-They're having a lovely... -Seafood delight. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
They've asked us to stay. I love seafood delight! | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
It's a pity - I thought we'd have a nice sing-song tonight, | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
just like the old days. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
Oh, I'm sorry, Jack. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
-Maybe next year, eh? -Next year, yeah, done. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Don't forget the most important thing - | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
-Mary... -Christmas! | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
-No, no - Mary... -New Year? | 0:05:10 | 0:05:11
No, no, no - Mary JONES down at the big hotel | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
makes lovely mince pies, so pop in. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
THEY LAUGH | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
See you later, Jack! | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20
-Merry Christmas! -Merry Christmas, Salty! | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
Bye-bye. Well, that's it, Salty - it's just you and me, innit? | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
Still, you are the best company I could ever, ever have. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:32
HE LAUGHS | 0:05:32 | 0:05:33
Yes, you are. And I've got a lovely Christmas present for you. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
Shall we go and open it? Come on, then. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
Good girl. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:42
SHIP'S HORN TOOTS | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
There we are. Yeah - that's it. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
Here we go. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:55
I promised you a present, didn't I, Salty? | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
Can you guess what it is? | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
It's a bone, a lovely, tasty yum-yum. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
You can have that later. No, don't open it yet. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
Save it for your Christmas tea | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
and I'll rest my old bones over here. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
Oh - good girl. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
It's a lovely old time, Christmas - isn't it, Salty? | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
Yes - full of memories. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
I've got a good story to tell, Salty. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
A winter's tale about a Christmas long, long ago. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
Once upon a twinkly time, long, long ago, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
I was a young fella, m'lad - you wouldn't have recognised me. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
I had a shock of think, black hair and freckles all over my face. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:47
I wasn't Old Jack back then. I was Young Jack. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Oh, it was so long ago. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
I had Salty's great-great-great-granddad, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
Sandy, with me. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
And even he was a little puppy. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
So, that Christmas, I woke up in the morning | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
and I ran all the way down to the harbour | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
to see my best friend, Sailor Sue. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
And there she was, with her great big smile | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
and her mop of wild red hair. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
I said, "Merry Christmas, Sailor Sue!" | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
And she said, "Merry Christmas, Young Jack!" | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
Now, Sailor Sue and I had been best friends | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
ever since we were born. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
We spent all our days together, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
swimming and playing and messing about with lobster pots. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
We always had such a good laugh together. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
But that Christmas morning, Sailor Sue looked a bit sad. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
I said, "What's wrong, Sailor Sue? It's Christmas Day! | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
"You're meant to be happy." | 0:07:43 | 0:07:44
She said, "Oh, Jack, a terrible thing has happened. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
"I had three Christmas presents, all ready for the big day, | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
"but then a great big wind came along, | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
"and it blew them out to sea. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
"I've lost them, Jack, and I don't know what to do." | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
So I said, "I'll help you find 'em, Sailor Sue." | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
She said, "Will you really, Jack?" I said, "Of course! | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
"What are best friends for? Come on!" | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
And we ran along the harbour wall till we got to my boat. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
But remember, this was many years ago, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
and the Rainbow...wasn't called the Rainbow back then, | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
cos she hadn't got her stripes yet. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
She was a just a little brown tub. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
So I said, "All aboard the Little Brown Tub! | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
"We're going on a quest." | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
"What's a quest?" said Sailor Sue. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
"It's a journey", I said, "a journey to find something." | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
"And we are going to find your lost Christmas presents. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
"Off we go!" | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
So, we set off on our Christmas quest, | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
Sailor Sue and me. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
Ho-ho! We zoomed along in the Little Brown Tub, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
heading north over the cold, wintry sea. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
There was snow in the air | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
and the wind nipped at our fingers and toes, | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
but we shivered and smiled, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
because we both loved being out at sea, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
in any kind of weather. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
And then we reached a huge iceberg. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
It was cold and frosty and towering above us. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
Sailor Sue called out, "There it is!" | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
And she pointed. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
And there, on top of the iceberg, was a top hat. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
She said, "The wind must have blown it all this way. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
"But that iceberg is ever so high - how are we going to get it down?" | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
I said, "Don't you worry about that." | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
And I blew a special whistle - it went... | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
HE WHISTLES | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
Ha! | 0:09:43 | 0:09:44 | |
And out of the sea came lots and lots of flying fish. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
And one of the flying fish leapt up, up, up | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
and knocked the top hat off the iceberg, | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
and it came tumbling down, down, down and...I caught it. | 0:09:55 | 0:10:01
And I said, "It's a very nice top hat, Sailor Sue. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
"Who's it for?" | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
She said, "Never mind that. We've got two more presents to find. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
"The Christmas Quest continues. Onwards!" | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
So we said goodbye to the flying fish | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
and sailed off in the Little Brown Tub, | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
top speed, heading west. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
Then we reached a big cliff-face, looming over us. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:29
It was the shore of some strange, distant land, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
but Sailor Sue pointed up and called out, "There it is!" | 0:10:32 | 0:10:37
Halfway up the cliff-face, on a narrow ledge, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
there was a bunch of flowers. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
"They're so high up", said Sailor Sue. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
"How can we get them down?" | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
I said, "Don't you worry about that." | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
And I blew another special whistle. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
This one went... | 0:10:52 | 0:10:53
HE WHISTLES | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
And out of the sky came my old friend Brenda the Stork. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
I called out, "Can you help us, Brenda?" | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
She said, "I certainly can. Please be patient. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
"Just wait a moment, thank you!" | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
Brenda swooped down, picked up the flowers in her beak, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:12
then she flew over the Little Brown Tub | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
and let go of the flowers | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
so that they fell down, down, down... | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
And Sailor Sue caught them with both hands. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:23
I said, "That's a very pretty bunch of flowers. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:27
"Who are they for?" | 0:11:27 | 0:11:28
She said, "Never mind that - we've got one more present to find. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
"The Christmas Quest continues. Onwards!" | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
So we said goodbye to Brenda the Stork | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
and sailed off in the Little Brown Tub, | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
top speed, heading south. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
Soon, we came upon Bluey the Whale. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
BLUEY SNORES | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
He was fast asleep, snoring and bobbing up and down | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
on top of the waves. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
Sailor Sue pointed up and said, "There it is!" | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
But I couldn't see anything. I said, "Where?" | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
And she said, "THERE!" | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
So I got out my trusty telescope and had a look. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:10
There was a gold ring, right on top of Bluey's head. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
"It's too high up", said Sailor Sue. "How can we get it down?" | 0:12:15 | 0:12:20
I said, "Don't you worry about that." | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
And I blew another special whistle. This one went... | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
HE WHISTLES | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
And the waves parted | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
and there was my old friend, Pearl the Mermaid. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
We said, "Merry Christmas, Pearl!" And then we told her the problem. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
She said, "Don't worry - all you need is this." | 0:12:42 | 0:12:47
And she held up a big, long tickly feather. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:52
I said, "We better stand back, Sailor Sue." | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
So we did and Pearl swam up to Bluey | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
and tickled him with the feather. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
Bluey woke up and he sneezed a great, big, enormous sneeze. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:11
He went, "Blah...lah...lah...PHOO!" | 0:13:11 | 0:13:16
And a huge fountain of water blew out of his blowhole. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
It sent the gold ring spinning through the air, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
it went up, up, up and then down, down, down. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
Sailor Sue and I both reached out and we caught it - together. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
"Hooray!" said Sailor Sue. "Well done, Jack!" | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
I said, "That's a very nice gold ring, but...who is it for?" | 0:13:36 | 0:13:41
She said, "Never mind. The Christmas Quest is over. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
"We found all the presents. Now it's time to go home, Jack." | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
So we wished Bluey and Pearl a very merry Christmas | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
and we sailed all the way back home. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
As soon as we arrived at the harbour, I said... | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
"We always have so much fun together, don't we, Sailor Sue? | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
"I...I wish we could do this all day long. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
"But you'd better deliver those Christmas presents, | 0:14:05 | 0:14:09
"before they get blown away again." | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
And Sailor Sue smiled. She said... | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
"They were never blown away. I was only pretending. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
"I did it myself. I scattered the presents far and wide, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:24
"all over the sea - north and west and south." | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
I said, "Why? Why did you do that? | 0:14:27 | 0:14:32
"Hold on a minute...who are those presents for?" | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
She handed me the top hat. She said, "The top hat is for you, Jack." | 0:14:36 | 0:14:42
I said, "Oh! Well, it's very nice. Thank you." | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
Then she held up the flowers and said, | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
"The flowers are for me." | 0:14:49 | 0:14:51
I said, "Oh! Well, that's nice. You look lovely." | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
And she said, "The gold ring is for both of us." | 0:14:55 | 0:15:01
I said, "Is it? Why's that, then?" | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
She said, "Because I'm going to marry you, Young Jack. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:09
"I'm going to marry you and we can spend our lives together, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
"having fun and adventures and quests every single day. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:17
"What do you say, Jack? Will you marry me?" | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
Oh...I was delighted. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
What a Christmas present! I was smiling from ear to ear. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:29
I said, "Oh, yes, I certainly will, Sailor Sue. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
"Will you marry me?" | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
She said, "Yes, I will." | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
And I said, "Merry Christmas, Sailor Sue." | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
And she said, "Merry Christmas, Jack, my love." | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
And we got married! | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
On Christmas Day, I married the most beautiful girl | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
in the whole wide world. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
And we sailed away and we had fun and adventures | 0:15:52 | 0:15:56
and quests every single day. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
HE LAUGHS FONDLY | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
Oh, that was a long, long time ago. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
My hair's no longer black. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
And my freckles? Oh, long since gone. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
Ah... | 0:16:09 | 0:16:11 | |
But I still think of her, Salty. Every single day. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
And on Christmas Day, I think of her more than ever. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
Merry Christmas, Sailor Sue. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:24
Merry Christmas, sweetheart. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
HE SIGHS | 0:16:28 | 0:16:29
Do you know, it's a shame we never had that sing-song. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
Oh, she loved a good old sing-song, did Sue. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
MUSIC PLAYS | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
Eh? | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40 | |
Can you hear that, Salty? | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
That's music I can hear. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
Look, Salty! It's night already. And it's snowing, too! | 0:16:47 | 0:16:51
It really is Christmas, isn't it? | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
Come on, girl, let's go and take a look. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
