0:00:490:00:53

Oh, where is it, Salty?

0:00:530:00:56

I know I've seen it somewhere.

0:00:560:00:59

Hello. We're trying to find the one thing I need for today's story

0:00:590:01:03

and it should be here somewhere in all this old sport stuff.

0:01:030:01:09

I don't know.

0:01:090:01:11

Where are you going?

0:01:110:01:13

Oh, oh, you clever girl.

0:01:140:01:17

You've got it, haven't you? You clever dog. She's got it.

0:01:170:01:21

That is my old tennis ball.

0:01:210:01:24

Ah, good. Now I can tell you the story

0:01:240:01:29

about the time we used that old ball for a game of cricket

0:01:290:01:32

on the beach.

0:01:320:01:34

It all happened when I was a boy,

0:01:340:01:37

in a twinkly time long, long ago.

0:01:370:01:40

In those days I used to run down to play on the beach

0:01:420:01:45

as often as I could,

0:01:450:01:47

meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.

0:01:470:01:52

Ernie had planted pieces of driftwood upright in the sand

0:01:530:01:58

to be our stumps.

0:01:580:02:00

Sue had her cricket bat with her

0:02:000:02:02

and I was trying to knock over the driftwood with my tennis ball.

0:02:020:02:06

I ran up and bowled the ball.

0:02:060:02:09

Whack!

0:02:090:02:10

Sue sent the ball whizzing across the sand.

0:02:100:02:13

"Come on, Sue," I said.

0:02:130:02:15

"You've been in bat all day."

0:02:150:02:17

She was really very good.

0:02:170:02:20

Ernie threw the ball back to me and I bowled the ball again,

0:02:200:02:23

this time as fast as I could.

0:02:230:02:25

Sue took a big swing at it and, whack,

0:02:250:02:30

the ball sailed up in the air and disappeared,

0:02:300:02:33

plop, in the middle of the rock pools.

0:02:330:02:37

Well, we dashed over to find it

0:02:370:02:39

but there are a lot of rock pools in Staithes.

0:02:390:02:42

It was going to be a long hunt.

0:02:420:02:44

"Perhaps it's down here somewhere," said Sue.

0:02:440:02:48

So, we knelt down and gazed deep down into the glittery waters

0:02:480:02:54

and there a magical world appeared before our eyes.

0:02:540:02:59

One morning, Sally the starfish popped her head

0:03:030:03:06

out of the rock pool for a quick look around.

0:03:060:03:10

Floating nearby on the surface was a large round thingummybob.

0:03:100:03:15

"What is that?" she asked Reginald the great, wise limpet.

0:03:160:03:21

Reginald looked at it for a moment and sighed.

0:03:210:03:25

"It's a tennis ball.

0:03:250:03:28

"The blobfish who live out in the big wide sea like to play catch.

0:03:280:03:33

"Their tennis balls are always landing in the rock pool."

0:03:330:03:39

"Wow," thought Sally.

0:03:390:03:40

"I must tell my friends."

0:03:400:03:42

And she dashed off.

0:03:420:03:45

Now, down below, another rock pooler had also spotted the tennis ball.

0:03:450:03:51

"Oh, we can't have that," he said.

0:03:510:03:54

It was Bertram, the butterfish.

0:03:540:03:57

"Very untidy. It'll have to go.

0:03:570:03:59

"Buster, get the honker. There's a job to do.

0:03:590:04:03

"Buster!"

0:04:030:04:05

And he bustled off.

0:04:050:04:07

Soon there was a clinking and a clanking sound

0:04:070:04:10

and a strange machine was wheeled out.

0:04:100:04:14

It was the seagull honker.

0:04:140:04:17

SALTY BARKS Yes, I know, Salty.

0:04:170:04:19

We know it was just an old car hooter, really, don't we?

0:04:190:04:23

Anyway, it was being pushed by Bertram and it was very heavy.

0:04:230:04:28

"There, that should do it," said Bertram.

0:04:290:04:33

He looked up at the tennis ball floating above and then

0:04:330:04:36

he looked over at the top of a rock where Buster the crab

0:04:360:04:39

now stood with a small boulder.

0:04:390:04:42

"Ready when you are," called out Buster.

0:04:420:04:45

"Push," shouted Bertram.

0:04:450:04:48

Buster pushed the boulder and it dropped straight down with a plip

0:04:480:04:54

right onto the squishy end of the seagull honker.

0:04:540:04:59

It gave a "too-choo"

0:04:590:05:02

and shot a huge jet of air upwards through the shell.

0:05:020:05:05

The jet of air hit the tennis ball and with a "la-loop"

0:05:050:05:10

it popped out of the rock pool and landed on the rocks nearby.

0:05:100:05:14

"There," said a very satisfied Bertram.

0:05:150:05:19

"Job done."

0:05:190:05:20

Meanwhile, Sally had dragged her friends away

0:05:200:05:23

from a game of hide-and-seek to show them the tennis ball.

0:05:230:05:28

Andrew the anemone and Belinda the blenny gazed up.

0:05:280:05:32

The tennis ball was gone.

0:05:320:05:35

"Are you sure you saw something?" said Andrew.

0:05:350:05:38

"Yes," said Sally

0:05:380:05:40

but she had no idea where it was now.

0:05:400:05:42

Well, Andrew and Belinda decided to head back to their game

0:05:420:05:46

and Sally was left all alone.

0:05:460:05:49

Now, at that moment a cheeky seagull landed beside the rock pool.

0:05:490:05:56

It saw the tennis ball and thought it might make a tasty treat

0:05:560:06:01

so it tipped its hat... SALTY BARKS

0:06:010:06:04

Yes, Salty, all the seagulls in Staithes have hats, don't they?

0:06:040:06:08

It's funny that, yes.

0:06:080:06:10

Anyway, it picked the tennis ball up in its beak

0:06:100:06:13

and flapped off into the sky.

0:06:130:06:17

But the tennis ball was way too big for the seagull's beak

0:06:170:06:20

and after a moment he squawked and dropped it.

0:06:200:06:24

The tennis ball tumbled back down and landed, splosh,

0:06:250:06:29

back in the rock pool.

0:06:290:06:31

Sally looked up.

0:06:310:06:33

"Oh, the tennis ball, it's back," she shouted

0:06:330:06:37

and she dashed off to tell her friends.

0:06:370:06:39

Well, Bertram heard Sally's shout, too,

0:06:390:06:42

and he looked out of his doorway and sighed.

0:06:420:06:45

"Oh, Buster," he called.

0:06:450:06:48

"It's back. Get a bigger bolder."

0:06:480:06:51

Once again Bertram and Buster wheeled the seagull honker outside.

0:06:530:06:58

This time, Buster heaved a medium-sized boulder

0:06:580:07:02

right onto the squishy end.

0:07:020:07:04

There was a mighty "sha-boosh"

0:07:040:07:07

and the tennis ball was sent spinning out of the rock pool.

0:07:070:07:12

It landed on a seaweedy piece of sand far away.

0:07:120:07:17

"There," said a very satisfied Bertram.

0:07:170:07:20

"Job done."

0:07:200:07:22

Meanwhile, Sally had brought her friends back to see the tennis ball.

0:07:220:07:27

"There. Look," smiled Sally.

0:07:270:07:30

"But where is it?" Asked Belinda quietly.

0:07:300:07:34

They looked up.

0:07:340:07:35

The tennis ball had gone.

0:07:350:07:38

"It was there.

0:07:380:07:39

"I'm sure it was," cried Sally.

0:07:390:07:42

Andrew and Belinda shook their heads and went back to their game.

0:07:420:07:47

Sally didn't know what to do.

0:07:470:07:49

Now, the tennis ball didn't stay long on the seaweedy piece of sand

0:07:490:07:54

because a little girl called Sue found it

0:07:540:07:58

and Sue was practising her cricket shots.

0:07:580:08:03

She threw the ball up in the air and, whack,

0:08:030:08:07

hit it with the cricket bat.

0:08:070:08:09

It sailed up, up, up into the air

0:08:090:08:12

and do you know where it landed?

0:08:120:08:15

Yes, you're right. Yes, right back in the rock pool where it started.

0:08:150:08:20

Splosh.

0:08:200:08:22

Oh, Reginald closed a weary eye.

0:08:220:08:25

There were a lot of tennis balls landing in his rock pool today.

0:08:250:08:30

Down below, Sally heard the splosh of the tennis ball landing

0:08:300:08:35

and she looked up.

0:08:350:08:37

"It's back!" she yelled.

0:08:370:08:39

"My tennis ball is back."

0:08:390:08:41

This time, Andrew and Belinda came rushing over and they saw it, too.

0:08:420:08:49

SALTY BARKS Yes, I know, I know, Salty.

0:08:490:08:52

You're not the only one who gets excited about tennis balls.

0:08:520:08:57

"Wow," said Andrew.

0:08:570:08:59

"You were right. That's amazing."

0:08:590:09:02

Sally was very pleased.

0:09:020:09:04

"It's come back to see me," she smiled.

0:09:040:09:08

But just as she was speaking,

0:09:080:09:11

"Heave!"

0:09:110:09:13

They all heard the sound of Buster giving his mightiest heave.

0:09:130:09:18

This time he was pushing a huge boulder.

0:09:180:09:23

It landed with a mighty "floop" on the squishy end

0:09:230:09:28

of the seagull honker and

0:09:280:09:30

"fwoo-shoo",

0:09:300:09:33

a jet of air hit the tennis ball

0:09:330:09:35

and it flew out of the rock pool high,

0:09:350:09:37

high in the air and landed far, far away

0:09:370:09:41

in the big wide sea.

0:09:410:09:43

"Perfect," said a very satisfied Bertram.

0:09:430:09:47

"That's got rid of it once and for all."

0:09:470:09:50

"No," cried Sally. "My tennis ball.

0:09:500:09:54

"It's gone forever."

0:09:540:09:56

Well, although Bertram was only trying to keep the rock pool tidy,

0:09:560:10:01

he didn't like to see Sally looking sad.

0:10:010:10:04

"You know, Sally," he said.

0:10:060:10:08

"Tennis balls don't really belong in rock pools.

0:10:080:10:13

"Why don't you go and see where it is now?"

0:10:130:10:16

So, Sally swam up to the surface,

0:10:180:10:21

crawled onto the rocks using all of the suckers on her little arms

0:10:210:10:26

and she sat gazing out to sea.

0:10:260:10:29

"I'll never see it again," she sighed.

0:10:290:10:32

But then, there was a distant "boing"

0:10:340:10:38

and suddenly the tennis ball flew up in the air.

0:10:380:10:42

Sally stared and do you know what you saw?

0:10:430:10:47

SALTY BARKS Yes, that's right, Salty. Yes.

0:10:470:10:50

She saw two very, very happy blobfish playing a lovely game of catch.

0:10:500:10:56

They had got their ball back again.

0:10:570:11:00

So, Bertram's seagull honker

0:11:000:11:04

had been helpful after all.

0:11:040:11:07

Well, Sally was thrilled.

0:11:080:11:11

Yes, the tennis ball was doing what tennis balls do best,

0:11:110:11:15

bouncing and whizzing around

0:11:150:11:17

and the two blobfish,

0:11:170:11:19

they were having the time of their lives.

0:11:190:11:23

"My tennis ball has gone to a very happy home," smiled Sally

0:11:230:11:28

and she watched the blobfish play catch

0:11:280:11:31

all day long until the sun finally dipped down into the sea

0:11:310:11:35

and disappeared behind the horizon.

0:11:350:11:38

Now, while we had been gazing into the rock pool,

0:11:410:11:44

do you know what had happened?

0:11:440:11:47

A seagull had found my tennis ball,

0:11:470:11:50

picked it up in his beak

0:11:500:11:52

and flown off into the sky.

0:11:520:11:54

"Look," shouted Ernie, "That's the tennis ball."

0:11:540:11:58

As it flew over the beach, it let out a squawk and, of course,

0:11:580:12:03

it let go of the tennis ball.

0:12:030:12:06

You knew that was going to happen, didn't you? Yes, of course you did.

0:12:060:12:10

The tennis ball dropped right onto the driftwood

0:12:100:12:13

we were using as stumps and knocked it down.

0:12:130:12:17

Well, Ernie and I almost fell over laughing.

0:12:170:12:20

"I think you're finally out," I said to Sue.

0:12:200:12:23

"Well, I'm not sure that's in the rules," she replied

0:12:230:12:27

but she was laughing. too.

0:12:270:12:30

So she let me and Ernie have a go at batting

0:12:300:12:34

and we played and played until the tide started to come in

0:12:340:12:39

and covered the rock pool like a great seaweedy blanket.

0:12:390:12:43

OLD JACK LAUGHS

0:12:530:12:55

Go on, Salty.

0:12:550:12:56

She's been wanting to do that all day.

0:12:570:13:00

So, why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?

0:13:000:13:06

What a good girl. Good girl.

0:13:060:13:08

Goodbye.

0:13:080:13:09

Come on, then.

0:13:090:13:11

Are you ready? Are you ready?

0:13:130:13:14

Go on, Salty.
