Oh, where is it, Salty? | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
I know I've seen it somewhere. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Hello. We're trying to find the one thing I need for today's story | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
and it should be here somewhere in all this old sport stuff. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:09
I don't know. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Where are you going? | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
Oh, oh, you clever girl. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
You've got it, haven't you? You clever dog. She's got it. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
That is my old tennis ball. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
Ah, good. Now I can tell you the story | 0:01:24 | 0:01:29
about the time we used that old ball for a game of cricket | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
on the beach. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
It all happened when I was a boy, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
in a twinkly time long, long ago. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
In those days I used to run down to play on the beach | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
as often as I could, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:52
Ernie had planted pieces of driftwood upright in the sand | 0:01:53 | 0:01:58
to be our stumps. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Sue had her cricket bat with her | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
and I was trying to knock over the driftwood with my tennis ball. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
I ran up and bowled the ball. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
Whack! | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
Sue sent the ball whizzing across the sand. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
"Come on, Sue," I said. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
"You've been in bat all day." | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
She was really very good. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
Ernie threw the ball back to me and I bowled the ball again, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
this time as fast as I could. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
Sue took a big swing at it and, whack, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
the ball sailed up in the air and disappeared, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
plop, in the middle of the rock pools. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
Well, we dashed over to find it | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
but there are a lot of rock pools in Staithes. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
It was going to be a long hunt. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
"Perhaps it's down here somewhere," said Sue. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
So, we knelt down and gazed deep down into the glittery waters | 0:02:48 | 0:02:54
and there a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
One morning, Sally the starfish popped her head | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
out of the rock pool for a quick look around. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
Floating nearby on the surface was a large round thingummybob. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:15
"What is that?" she asked Reginald the great, wise limpet. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:21
Reginald looked at it for a moment and sighed. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
"It's a tennis ball. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
"The blobfish who live out in the big wide sea like to play catch. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
"Their tennis balls are always landing in the rock pool." | 0:03:33 | 0:03:39
"Wow," thought Sally. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
"I must tell my friends." | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
And she dashed off. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
Now, down below, another rock pooler had also spotted the tennis ball. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:51
"Oh, we can't have that," he said. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
It was Bertram, the butterfish. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
"Very untidy. It'll have to go. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
"Buster, get the honker. There's a job to do. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
"Buster!" | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
And he bustled off. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Soon there was a clinking and a clanking sound | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
and a strange machine was wheeled out. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
It was the seagull honker. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
SALTY BARKS Yes, I know, Salty. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
We know it was just an old car hooter, really, don't we? | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
Anyway, it was being pushed by Bertram and it was very heavy. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
"There, that should do it," said Bertram. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
He looked up at the tennis ball floating above and then | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
he looked over at the top of a rock where Buster the crab | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
now stood with a small boulder. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
"Ready when you are," called out Buster. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
"Push," shouted Bertram. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
Buster pushed the boulder and it dropped straight down with a plip | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54
right onto the squishy end of the seagull honker. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59
It gave a "too-choo" | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
and shot a huge jet of air upwards through the shell. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
The jet of air hit the tennis ball and with a "la-loop" | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
it popped out of the rock pool and landed on the rocks nearby. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
"There," said a very satisfied Bertram. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
"Job done." | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20
Meanwhile, Sally had dragged her friends away | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
from a game of hide-and-seek to show them the tennis ball. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
Andrew the anemone and Belinda the blenny gazed up. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
The tennis ball was gone. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
"Are you sure you saw something?" said Andrew. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
"Yes," said Sally | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
but she had no idea where it was now. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
Well, Andrew and Belinda decided to head back to their game | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
and Sally was left all alone. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
Now, at that moment a cheeky seagull landed beside the rock pool. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:56
It saw the tennis ball and thought it might make a tasty treat | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01
so it tipped its hat... SALTY BARKS | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Yes, Salty, all the seagulls in Staithes have hats, don't they? | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
It's funny that, yes. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
Anyway, it picked the tennis ball up in its beak | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
and flapped off into the sky. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
But the tennis ball was way too big for the seagull's beak | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
and after a moment he squawked and dropped it. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
The tennis ball tumbled back down and landed, splosh, | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
back in the rock pool. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
Sally looked up. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
"Oh, the tennis ball, it's back," she shouted | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
and she dashed off to tell her friends. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
Well, Bertram heard Sally's shout, too, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
and he looked out of his doorway and sighed. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
"Oh, Buster," he called. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
"It's back. Get a bigger bolder." | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Once again Bertram and Buster wheeled the seagull honker outside. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:58
This time, Buster heaved a medium-sized boulder | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
right onto the squishy end. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
There was a mighty "sha-boosh" | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
and the tennis ball was sent spinning out of the rock pool. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:12
It landed on a seaweedy piece of sand far away. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
"There," said a very satisfied Bertram. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
"Job done." | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
Meanwhile, Sally had brought her friends back to see the tennis ball. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:27
"There. Look," smiled Sally. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
"But where is it?" Asked Belinda quietly. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
They looked up. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:35
The tennis ball had gone. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
"It was there. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:39
"I'm sure it was," cried Sally. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
Andrew and Belinda shook their heads and went back to their game. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:47
Sally didn't know what to do. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
Now, the tennis ball didn't stay long on the seaweedy piece of sand | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
because a little girl called Sue found it | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
and Sue was practising her cricket shots. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:03
She threw the ball up in the air and, whack, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
hit it with the cricket bat. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
It sailed up, up, up into the air | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
and do you know where it landed? | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
Yes, you're right. Yes, right back in the rock pool where it started. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:20
Splosh. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
Oh, Reginald closed a weary eye. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
There were a lot of tennis balls landing in his rock pool today. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:30
Down below, Sally heard the splosh of the tennis ball landing | 0:08:30 | 0:08:35
and she looked up. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
"It's back!" she yelled. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
"My tennis ball is back." | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
This time, Andrew and Belinda came rushing over and they saw it, too. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:49
SALTY BARKS Yes, I know, I know, Salty. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
You're not the only one who gets excited about tennis balls. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
"Wow," said Andrew. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
"You were right. That's amazing." | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
Sally was very pleased. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
"It's come back to see me," she smiled. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
But just as she was speaking, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
"Heave!" | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
They all heard the sound of Buster giving his mightiest heave. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:18
This time he was pushing a huge boulder. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:23
It landed with a mighty "floop" on the squishy end | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
of the seagull honker and | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
"fwoo-shoo", | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
a jet of air hit the tennis ball | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
and it flew out of the rock pool high, | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
high in the air and landed far, far away | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
in the big wide sea. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
"Perfect," said a very satisfied Bertram. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
"That's got rid of it once and for all." | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
"No," cried Sally. "My tennis ball. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
"It's gone forever." | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
Well, although Bertram was only trying to keep the rock pool tidy, | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
he didn't like to see Sally looking sad. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
"You know, Sally," he said. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
"Tennis balls don't really belong in rock pools. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:13
"Why don't you go and see where it is now?" | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
So, Sally swam up to the surface, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
crawled onto the rocks using all of the suckers on her little arms | 0:10:21 | 0:10:26
and she sat gazing out to sea. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
"I'll never see it again," she sighed. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
But then, there was a distant "boing" | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
and suddenly the tennis ball flew up in the air. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
Sally stared and do you know what you saw? | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
SALTY BARKS Yes, that's right, Salty. Yes. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
She saw two very, very happy blobfish playing a lovely game of catch. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
They had got their ball back again. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
So, Bertram's seagull honker | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
had been helpful after all. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
Well, Sally was thrilled. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
Yes, the tennis ball was doing what tennis balls do best, | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
bouncing and whizzing around | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
and the two blobfish, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
they were having the time of their lives. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:23
"My tennis ball has gone to a very happy home," smiled Sally | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
and she watched the blobfish play catch | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
all day long until the sun finally dipped down into the sea | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
and disappeared behind the horizon. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
Now, while we had been gazing into the rock pool, | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
do you know what had happened? | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
A seagull had found my tennis ball, | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
picked it up in his beak | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
and flown off into the sky. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
"Look," shouted Ernie, "That's the tennis ball." | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
As it flew over the beach, it let out a squawk and, of course, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
it let go of the tennis ball. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
You knew that was going to happen, didn't you? Yes, of course you did. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:10
The tennis ball dropped right onto the driftwood | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
we were using as stumps and knocked it down. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
Well, Ernie and I almost fell over laughing. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
"I think you're finally out," I said to Sue. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
"Well, I'm not sure that's in the rules," she replied | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
but she was laughing. too. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
So she let me and Ernie have a go at batting | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
and we played and played until the tide started to come in | 0:12:34 | 0:12:39
and covered the rock pool like a great seaweedy blanket. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
OLD JACK LAUGHS | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
Go on, Salty. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:56
She's been wanting to do that all day. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
So, why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time? | 0:13:00 | 0:13:06
What a good girl. Good girl. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
Goodbye. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
Come on, then. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
Are you ready? Are you ready? | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
Go on, Salty. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16 |
