Oh, hello. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
Salty and I, we've just been having a bit of a tidy up | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
on the Rainbow today. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Look at it. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
Not too keen on tidying up, are you, Salty? | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
She makes most of the mess anyway. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
Oh, would you believe that? | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
Look at this. Look at this. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
This is my beautiful red kite. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
Me and my dad made this together when I was a boy. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
Yeah. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32 | |
And we'd take it down to the beach every time it was windy, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
which happens quite a lot in Staithes, doesn't it, Salty? | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
And we'd fly it. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
Do you know what? | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
Finding this, it reminds me of a story. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
It's a swoopy, divey, glidey sort of a story. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
And it all happened when I was a boy | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
in a twinkly time long, long ago. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
You know, I used to run down to play on the beach as often as I could. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:08
Meeting up with my best friends, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
It was particularly windy on the beach that day | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
and the kite was flying really well. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Ernie asked if he could try flying the kite himself | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
so I passed him the strings and said we could hold it together. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
But Ernie, he wanted to fly the kite on his own. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
"Don't worry, Jack," he said, and he grabbed the strings. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
The kite swooped lower and lower until, with a sudden whoosh, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:43
it came down. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
Crunch. Oh, dear. Huh. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
"We'd better go and see if it's all right," suggested Sue. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
We followed the strings all the way across the beach | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
to where the kite had crashed | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
and we saw the tail had fallen into a rock pool nearby. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
One windy day, Sally the Starfish and Belinda the Blenny | 0:03:15 | 0:03:20
were playing together in the seaweed when they heard a long, snaily sigh. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
SNAIL SIGHS | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
It came from Sidney the Snail. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
He was sitting on his favourite rock | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
gazing up through the water at the sky above. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
"Hi, Sidney," said Sally. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
"What are you looking at?" | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
Sidney sighed again. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
"Look," he said. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
They all looked up and there, high above them, flew a beautiful kite. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:52
"I've been watching that big red bird | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
"fly in the sky all morning," he explained. | 0:03:55 | 0:04:00
"So, why the big sigh?" asked Belinda. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
Sidney sniffed. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
"Because I would really love to fly in the sky, too." | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10
"But you're a snail," said Sally. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
"I know," replied Sidney. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
"And that means I'm stuck down here on this rock." | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
"Maybe not," said Sally, with a big grin, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
and she dashed off. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
Well, what she brought back would've made your whiskers whiffle, Salty. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:32
Buster the Crab, Andrew the Anemone and Sheena the Shrimp | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
were all helping Sally to push a strange-looking machine. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
Sidney slid slowly over to take a closer look. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:46
"What is it?" he asked. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
"It's a rock pool rocket," Sally proudly announced. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
"You get in the seat at that end. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
"I pull on the stretchy seaweed at this end | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
"and, whoosh, you rocket into the sky." | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
Sidney's eyes lit up. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
He was going to fly. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
He slithered into the seat of the rock pool rocket, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
shrinking back in his shell for safety | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
until just his eyes were peeping out. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
Then Sally pulled back on the stretchy seaweed. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
And Andrew started the countdown. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
"Five, four, three, two, one," he shouted. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
Sally let go. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
"Twang!" went the seaweed as it snapped in two. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
"Boing!" went Sidney as he whooshed through the water. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
"Whee!" he cried. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
Oh... But, oh, dear. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
Oh, dear. Instead of going upwards towards the sky, | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48
the broken seaweed sent Sidney | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
whizzing across the sandy bed of the rock pool. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
With an "ooh" and an "ouch" and an "o-o-o-ooh", | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
he bounced over and over like a pebble | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
until he landed with a squishy bump in a soft clump of seagrass. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
"Are you all right, Sidney?" asked Belinda | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
with a worried look at the others. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
Sidney blinked and smiled. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
"Yes, I am. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
"Can we try that again?" | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
Sally shook her head and held up the snapped seaweed. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
"I'm afraid we can't. The rock pool rocket is broken." | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
"Oh, well," said Sidney. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
"I suppose snails are just not supposed to fly. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
-"Ho-ho-ho..." -HE SIGHS | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
And he sighed another big snaily sigh. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
And then Buster clicked and clacked over. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
He had an idea. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
"What if we all balance on top of each other like a tower | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
"with Sidney at the top? | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
"You'll be so high, you'll feel like you're flying." | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
So Andrew balanced on Buster, then it was Belinda's turn, | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
and then Sheena and then Sally, and right on top of the tower | 0:07:01 | 0:07:06
was a thrilled Sidney. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:07
Sidney's head popped out of the water's surface. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
He could feel the sea breeze on his face. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
"I'm almost flying," he chuckled | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
and he tried to stretch further towards the sky. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
But Sidney's stretching started to make the tower wobble. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
"Stay still, Sidney," called Buster from the bottom, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
but it was too late. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
The tower wobbled and wibbled one way and then the other | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
until, crash, down it came. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
Well, everyone rushed over to where Sidney had landed | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
to check that he was all right. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
"I'm sorry we couldn't make you fly," said Buster. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
"Oh, that's all right, Buster," sighed Sidney. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
"I suppose snails are just not meant to leave the ground." | 0:07:53 | 0:07:58
And then a very strange thing happened. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:03
Sidney the snail started to leave the ground. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
He blinked a few blinks as he rose up | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
through the water of the rock pool. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
The others all gazed at him in surprise. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
Sidney felt a tugging on his tail and there he saw wrapped around it | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
was a long piece of red seaweed that was pulling him up. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:29
He must've got tangled in it when he fell from the tower. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
"That's funny-looking seaweed," said Sheena. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
Of course, you know what Sidney was tangled in, don't you? | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
SALTY BARKS | 0:08:41 | 0:08:42
That's right, Salty. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
It wasn't seaweed. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
It was tail of the kite. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
"Whoo!" called Sidney as he was pulled higher. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
"Quick, everyone!" shouted Buster. "Grab him." | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
One by one, the friends grabbed hold of the kite tail | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
as it whizzed past them. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:02
They tried to pull it back down, but it was too strong. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:07
With an enormous plip, it pulled them all out of the water. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:12
Sidney and his little friends then shot past a snoozing Reginald | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
with a great whoosh. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
"Hi, Reginald," shouted Sidney. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
"Flying snails?" yawned Reginald. "Whatever next?" | 0:09:22 | 0:09:27
Well, in no time at all, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:30
Sidney and his friends found themselves high up in the sky. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
"Wow! Look!" laughed Sidney. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
"I'm tangled in the tail of the big red bird. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
"Whee-whee-whee-whee! | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
"Look at the view. Whoo!" | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
Well, the kite swooped and dived this way and that. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:51
Sidney was having great fun, but his friends couldn't hold on forever. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
"We need to get back home," called Sally. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
So, Sheena the Shrimp nibbled away at the kite's tail | 0:10:00 | 0:10:05
until Sidney was untangled. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
"The next time we swoop over the rock pool, let go," Buster shouted. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:14
The kite did one last dive, it glided low over the rock pool, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:22
and with a splash, splash, splosh, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
the rock poolers let go and plopped back down into the water. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:31
Sidney was the last to drop. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
He took a final look at the amazing view | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
before floating gently down to the rock pool floor, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
where he landed safe on his favourite rock. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48
Everyone crowded round Sidney. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
"What an adventure," laughed Andrew as he bounced around. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
"Let's fly again," shouted Sheena. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
But Sidney, he said nothing. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
He just blinked. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
"Would you like to fly again?" Sally asked him. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
Sidney shook his head and smiled. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:10
"You know," he said, "it was fabulous to fly. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:15
"I'll never forget it, but... | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
"I'm a snail and snails aren't really supposed to fly. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:23
"Anyway, I like it in the rock pool with all my friends around | 0:11:23 | 0:11:27
"watching the seaweed swish | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
"while I'm sitting here on my favourite rock." | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
He gave one last look up at the sky | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
and then carried on playing with his friends | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
-for the rest of the day. -HE CHUCKLES | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
We left the rock pool | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
carrying the long wet tail of the kite in a big messy bundle. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:54
We got the kite back onto the beach | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
and Ernie was very keen to fly it again. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
He picked up the long strings while Sue and I | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
held the kite high before letting it fly up into the air. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:07
The tail of the kite was really wet | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
and, as the kite flew, drops of water from the tail fell down. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:14
It was just like rain. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
"We will need to keep the kite flying | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
"until the tails are dry," said Sue. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
And that's just what we did. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:22
Flying and playing all afternoon until it was time for us to go home, | 0:12:22 | 0:12:29
when the tide started to come in | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
and covered the rock pool | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
like a great seaweedy blanket. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
Ha-ha! I have some lovely memories of flying this kite, I do. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
It's a bit windy today. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
You fancy going for a fly, do you, Salty, eh? | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
So why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time? | 0:12:57 | 0:13:02
Bye-bye. Come on. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05 |
