# Those lovely Rockpool Tales. #

0:00:490:00:52

Oh, hello.

0:00:550:00:59

Salty and I, we've just been having a bit of a tidy up

0:00:590:01:02

on the Rainbow today.

0:01:020:01:03

Look at it.

0:01:030:01:04

Not too keen on tidying up, are you, Salty?

0:01:040:01:07

She makes most of the mess anyway.

0:01:070:01:09

Oh, would you believe that?

0:01:110:01:15

Look at this. Look at this.

0:01:160:01:20

This is my beautiful red kite.

0:01:220:01:26

Me and my dad made this together when I was a boy.

0:01:270:01:31

Yeah.

0:01:310:01:32

And we'd take it down to the beach every time it was windy,

0:01:320:01:36

which happens quite a lot in Staithes, doesn't it, Salty?

0:01:360:01:40

And we'd fly it.

0:01:400:01:42

Do you know what?

0:01:420:01:43

Finding this, it reminds me of a story.

0:01:430:01:47

It's a swoopy, divey, glidey sort of a story.

0:01:480:01:52

And it all happened when I was a boy

0:01:530:01:57

in a twinkly time long, long ago.

0:01:570:02:00

You know, I used to run down to play on the beach as often as I could.

0:02:020:02:08

Meeting up with my best friends,

0:02:080:02:11

Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.

0:02:110:02:14

It was particularly windy on the beach that day

0:02:160:02:19

and the kite was flying really well.

0:02:190:02:22

Ernie asked if he could try flying the kite himself

0:02:220:02:26

so I passed him the strings and said we could hold it together.

0:02:260:02:29

But Ernie, he wanted to fly the kite on his own.

0:02:290:02:33

"Don't worry, Jack," he said, and he grabbed the strings.

0:02:330:02:37

The kite swooped lower and lower until, with a sudden whoosh,

0:02:370:02:43

it came down.

0:02:430:02:45

Crunch. Oh, dear. Huh.

0:02:450:02:48

"We'd better go and see if it's all right," suggested Sue.

0:02:480:02:52

We followed the strings all the way across the beach

0:02:520:02:56

to where the kite had crashed

0:02:560:02:58

and we saw the tail had fallen into a rock pool nearby.

0:02:580:03:02

And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters,

0:03:020:03:06

a magical world appeared before our eyes.

0:03:060:03:10

One windy day, Sally the Starfish and Belinda the Blenny

0:03:150:03:20

were playing together in the seaweed when they heard a long, snaily sigh.

0:03:200:03:26

SNAIL SIGHS

0:03:260:03:28

It came from Sidney the Snail.

0:03:280:03:31

He was sitting on his favourite rock

0:03:310:03:34

gazing up through the water at the sky above.

0:03:340:03:37

"Hi, Sidney," said Sally.

0:03:370:03:40

"What are you looking at?"

0:03:400:03:42

Sidney sighed again.

0:03:420:03:44

"Look," he said.

0:03:440:03:46

They all looked up and there, high above them, flew a beautiful kite.

0:03:460:03:52

"I've been watching that big red bird

0:03:520:03:55

"fly in the sky all morning," he explained.

0:03:550:04:00

"So, why the big sigh?" asked Belinda.

0:04:000:04:04

Sidney sniffed.

0:04:040:04:05

"Because I would really love to fly in the sky, too."

0:04:050:04:10

"But you're a snail," said Sally.

0:04:100:04:13

"I know," replied Sidney.

0:04:130:04:16

"And that means I'm stuck down here on this rock."

0:04:160:04:20

"Maybe not," said Sally, with a big grin,

0:04:200:04:24

and she dashed off.

0:04:240:04:26

Well, what she brought back would've made your whiskers whiffle, Salty.

0:04:260:04:32

Buster the Crab, Andrew the Anemone and Sheena the Shrimp

0:04:320:04:36

were all helping Sally to push a strange-looking machine.

0:04:360:04:41

Sidney slid slowly over to take a closer look.

0:04:410:04:46

"What is it?" he asked.

0:04:460:04:48

"It's a rock pool rocket," Sally proudly announced.

0:04:480:04:52

"You get in the seat at that end.

0:04:520:04:54

"I pull on the stretchy seaweed at this end

0:04:540:04:57

"and, whoosh, you rocket into the sky."

0:04:570:05:00

Sidney's eyes lit up.

0:05:000:05:03

He was going to fly.

0:05:030:05:05

He slithered into the seat of the rock pool rocket,

0:05:060:05:10

shrinking back in his shell for safety

0:05:100:05:12

until just his eyes were peeping out.

0:05:120:05:16

Then Sally pulled back on the stretchy seaweed.

0:05:160:05:19

And Andrew started the countdown.

0:05:200:05:23

"Five, four, three, two, one," he shouted.

0:05:230:05:28

Sally let go.

0:05:280:05:31

"Twang!" went the seaweed as it snapped in two.

0:05:310:05:35

"Boing!" went Sidney as he whooshed through the water.

0:05:350:05:39

"Whee!" he cried.

0:05:390:05:41

Oh... But, oh, dear.

0:05:410:05:43

Oh, dear. Instead of going upwards towards the sky,

0:05:430:05:48

the broken seaweed sent Sidney

0:05:480:05:51

whizzing across the sandy bed of the rock pool.

0:05:510:05:54

With an "ooh" and an "ouch" and an "o-o-o-ooh",

0:05:540:05:57

he bounced over and over like a pebble

0:05:570:06:00

until he landed with a squishy bump in a soft clump of seagrass.

0:06:000:06:05

"Are you all right, Sidney?" asked Belinda

0:06:050:06:08

with a worried look at the others.

0:06:080:06:10

Sidney blinked and smiled.

0:06:100:06:13

"Yes, I am.

0:06:130:06:16

"Can we try that again?"

0:06:160:06:18

Sally shook her head and held up the snapped seaweed.

0:06:180:06:23

"I'm afraid we can't. The rock pool rocket is broken."

0:06:230:06:27

"Oh, well," said Sidney.

0:06:270:06:30

"I suppose snails are just not supposed to fly.

0:06:300:06:34

-"Ho-ho-ho..."

-HE SIGHS

0:06:340:06:37

And he sighed another big snaily sigh.

0:06:370:06:41

And then Buster clicked and clacked over.

0:06:410:06:45

He had an idea.

0:06:450:06:48

"What if we all balance on top of each other like a tower

0:06:480:06:52

"with Sidney at the top?

0:06:520:06:54

"You'll be so high, you'll feel like you're flying."

0:06:540:06:57

So Andrew balanced on Buster, then it was Belinda's turn,

0:06:570:07:01

and then Sheena and then Sally, and right on top of the tower

0:07:010:07:06

was a thrilled Sidney.

0:07:060:07:07

Sidney's head popped out of the water's surface.

0:07:090:07:13

He could feel the sea breeze on his face.

0:07:130:07:16

"I'm almost flying," he chuckled

0:07:160:07:19

and he tried to stretch further towards the sky.

0:07:190:07:23

But Sidney's stretching started to make the tower wobble.

0:07:230:07:27

"Stay still, Sidney," called Buster from the bottom,

0:07:270:07:31

but it was too late.

0:07:310:07:33

The tower wobbled and wibbled one way and then the other

0:07:330:07:36

until, crash, down it came.

0:07:360:07:40

Well, everyone rushed over to where Sidney had landed

0:07:410:07:45

to check that he was all right.

0:07:450:07:47

"I'm sorry we couldn't make you fly," said Buster.

0:07:470:07:50

"Oh, that's all right, Buster," sighed Sidney.

0:07:500:07:53

"I suppose snails are just not meant to leave the ground."

0:07:530:07:58

And then a very strange thing happened.

0:07:580:08:03

Sidney the snail started to leave the ground.

0:08:030:08:07

He blinked a few blinks as he rose up

0:08:090:08:12

through the water of the rock pool.

0:08:120:08:15

The others all gazed at him in surprise.

0:08:150:08:19

Sidney felt a tugging on his tail and there he saw wrapped around it

0:08:190:08:23

was a long piece of red seaweed that was pulling him up.

0:08:230:08:29

He must've got tangled in it when he fell from the tower.

0:08:290:08:33

"That's funny-looking seaweed," said Sheena.

0:08:330:08:37

Of course, you know what Sidney was tangled in, don't you?

0:08:370:08:41

SALTY BARKS

0:08:410:08:42

That's right, Salty.

0:08:420:08:44

It wasn't seaweed.

0:08:440:08:46

It was tail of the kite.

0:08:460:08:49

"Whoo!" called Sidney as he was pulled higher.

0:08:490:08:53

"Quick, everyone!" shouted Buster. "Grab him."

0:08:530:08:57

One by one, the friends grabbed hold of the kite tail

0:08:570:09:01

as it whizzed past them.

0:09:010:09:02

They tried to pull it back down, but it was too strong.

0:09:020:09:07

With an enormous plip, it pulled them all out of the water.

0:09:070:09:12

Sidney and his little friends then shot past a snoozing Reginald

0:09:120:09:16

with a great whoosh.

0:09:160:09:18

"Hi, Reginald," shouted Sidney.

0:09:190:09:22

"Flying snails?" yawned Reginald. "Whatever next?"

0:09:220:09:27

Well, in no time at all,

0:09:290:09:30

Sidney and his friends found themselves high up in the sky.

0:09:300:09:34

"Wow! Look!" laughed Sidney.

0:09:340:09:37

"I'm tangled in the tail of the big red bird.

0:09:370:09:41

"Whee-whee-whee-whee!

0:09:410:09:43

"Look at the view. Whoo!"

0:09:430:09:46

Well, the kite swooped and dived this way and that.

0:09:460:09:51

Sidney was having great fun, but his friends couldn't hold on forever.

0:09:510:09:56

"We need to get back home," called Sally.

0:09:560:10:00

So, Sheena the Shrimp nibbled away at the kite's tail

0:10:000:10:05

until Sidney was untangled.

0:10:050:10:08

"The next time we swoop over the rock pool, let go," Buster shouted.

0:10:080:10:14

The kite did one last dive, it glided low over the rock pool,

0:10:150:10:22

and with a splash, splash, splosh,

0:10:220:10:25

the rock poolers let go and plopped back down into the water.

0:10:250:10:31

Sidney was the last to drop.

0:10:310:10:34

He took a final look at the amazing view

0:10:340:10:38

before floating gently down to the rock pool floor,

0:10:380:10:43

where he landed safe on his favourite rock.

0:10:430:10:48

Everyone crowded round Sidney.

0:10:480:10:51

"What an adventure," laughed Andrew as he bounced around.

0:10:510:10:55

"Let's fly again," shouted Sheena.

0:10:550:10:58

But Sidney, he said nothing.

0:10:580:11:00

He just blinked.

0:11:000:11:02

"Would you like to fly again?" Sally asked him.

0:11:020:11:06

Sidney shook his head and smiled.

0:11:060:11:10

"You know," he said, "it was fabulous to fly.

0:11:100:11:15

"I'll never forget it, but...

0:11:150:11:17

"I'm a snail and snails aren't really supposed to fly.

0:11:170:11:23

"Anyway, I like it in the rock pool with all my friends around

0:11:230:11:27

"watching the seaweed swish

0:11:270:11:30

"while I'm sitting here on my favourite rock."

0:11:300:11:35

He gave one last look up at the sky

0:11:360:11:40

and then carried on playing with his friends

0:11:400:11:44

-for the rest of the day.

-HE CHUCKLES

0:11:440:11:47

We left the rock pool

0:11:470:11:49

carrying the long wet tail of the kite in a big messy bundle.

0:11:490:11:54

We got the kite back onto the beach

0:11:540:11:56

and Ernie was very keen to fly it again.

0:11:560:11:59

He picked up the long strings while Sue and I

0:11:590:12:02

held the kite high before letting it fly up into the air.

0:12:020:12:07

The tail of the kite was really wet

0:12:070:12:10

and, as the kite flew, drops of water from the tail fell down.

0:12:100:12:14

It was just like rain.

0:12:140:12:16

"We will need to keep the kite flying

0:12:160:12:18

"until the tails are dry," said Sue.

0:12:180:12:21

And that's just what we did.

0:12:210:12:22

Flying and playing all afternoon until it was time for us to go home,

0:12:220:12:29

when the tide started to come in

0:12:290:12:31

and covered the rock pool

0:12:310:12:34

like a great seaweedy blanket.

0:12:340:12:36

Ha-ha! I have some lovely memories of flying this kite, I do.

0:12:470:12:51

It's a bit windy today.

0:12:510:12:53

You fancy going for a fly, do you, Salty, eh?

0:12:530:12:57

So why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?

0:12:570:13:02

Bye-bye. Come on.
