Ha-ha-ha! There's the birthday boy... | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
-Hello, Ernie. -Oh, hello, Jack. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
Very happy birthday to you. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Oh, you remembered! | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
Can I buy you a cuppa at The Mermaid? | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Sounds good, but Shelly's told me to stay away today - apparently, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
there's going to be a birthday surprise. I think it's a cake. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Woo-hoo! Do you hear that, Salty, a cake? | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
In that case, we'll leave you to your fishing. Come on, girl. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
See you later, Jack. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
Happy fishing! | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Oh, that fish looks a little lonely. We need more. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
Perhaps a little magic will help. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Here we are, Shelly, how are you going? | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Oh, Jack. You surprised me! Hello. Hello, Salty. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
Get down, that's it. Is that the cake you've made for Ernie? | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
It is, I was thinking it needs a few more fish. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
Yes, it could do, he'd like that. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
Is he around? | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
He's over there, he's fishing. He won't be any trouble. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Good. Come and see the birthday dog biscuits I made for Salty. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
Did you hear that, Salty? Lucky you, eh? You stay there, good girl. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
Thank you very much! | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Ha-ha-ha! Dog biscuits! | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Noooo! | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
Oh! | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06 | |
Salty will love those biscuits, thank you - we'd better get | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
-back to The Rainbow, leave you to finish the cake. -OK. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
See you later, then, OK? | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
-Come on, you've been very good sitting there. -See you, Jack. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
-Toodle-ooh! Ta-ta! -See you, Salty. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
Right, the cake. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
Where is the cake? | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
Huh? | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31 | |
There she is, The Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:03:41 | 0:03:47
TOOT! TOOT! | 0:03:47 | 0:03:48
Hey-hey. Come on, Salty. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
# Dee-dee-dee-dee. # | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
Here we are. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
Into your bed, good girl, go on, that's it. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
Do you know, I do like a birthday surprise. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
Do you remember, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
when we got a surprise gift for Shelly's birthday? | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
Right, ooh, I'll just get comfortable, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
and I'll remind you... | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Once upon a twinkly time, The Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
waved goodbye to Whitby, and disappeared over the horizon, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
heading for a faraway port. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32

# Just Salty Dog and me. # | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
Oh, it was a long journey. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
And when we finally arrived, we moored The Rainbow in | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
a harbour which had tall towers | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
and domes shaped like onions. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
We were met by a merchant who gave a bow and said, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
"Greetings, travellers from afar. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
"I welcome you to my bazaar." | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
Well, her bazaar turned out to be a kind of market shop, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
stocked with all manner of amazing things we had never seen before. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
And then we spotted a rather tatty but beautiful old carpet. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:26
It was warm and had lovely sniffy old smells that Salty loved. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
"A fine choice your doggy friend has made," said the merchant, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
"for that carpet is a magic carpet." | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
I was astounded and Salty's whiskers whiffled in the air! | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44
A magic carpet! | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
We could take it home to Shelly. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
The merchant took me to one side | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
and explained there were magical words you had to say to fly it. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:55
The magical words were, | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
"Widdly-diddly-dee." | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
Salty and I were very eager to get this wonderful carpet home, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
so we paid the merchant and we dashed off. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
We hurried back through the narrow streets to The Rainbow, | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
but as we turned the corner, | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
a terrible shock awaited us in the harbour. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
The Rainbow had gone. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
"Maybe The Rainbow had sailed home without us," I thought. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
Sometimes The Rainbow does that. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
What we didn't know, was that the rascally pirate, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
Kitty Cutlass, had followed us all the way to the faraway port | 0:06:29 | 0:06:34
and whilst we were in the bazaar she had gone and taken our boat, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
leaving us there on the harbour with nothing but a carpet. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:43
"Still," said Salty, "it is a magic carpet, perhaps we can fly it home | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
"and we'll find The Rainbow on the way." | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
It sounded worth a try, so we started saying the magic words, | 0:06:52 | 0:06:57
"Widdly-diddly-dee." | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
But nothing happened. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
We tried again. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:04
"WIDDLY-DIDDLY-DEE," we said. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
But still, nothing. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
That merchant must have tricked us. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
Now we were in a pickle. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
Just then, a chance wind suddenly whipped the carpet into the air, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
and sent it skimming into the water. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
Well, Salty, she wasn't going to let Shelly's carpet get away | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
without a fight, and to my amazement she leapt into the sea after it, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
and they both disappeared under the waves. Disaster! | 0:07:32 | 0:07:37
Now I had lost The Rainbow, the carpet and Salty. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:41
But not for long - | 0:07:41 | 0:07:42
suddenly, with an enormous splash, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
there she was, skimming across the waves towards me, | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
sitting proudly on the carpet, I could hardly believe my eyes. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
It was a magic carpet after all, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
but not the flying-in-the-air sort, | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
no, no, this was a magic sea carpet. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
They like to fly under the water, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
that's why you don't see them very often. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
And with a magic sea carpet to transport us we might be able to get | 0:08:09 | 0:08:13
home in time for Shelly's birthday and find the missing Rainbow. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:18
I jumped onto the carpet next to Salty. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
"Hold on tight," I shouted. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
And down under the water we flew. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
Fish stared open-mouthed | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
as they saw us speed by on our magic sea carpet. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
I don't think they'd ever seen one before - a seahorse waved to us, | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
wanting to hitch a lift. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
"Could you give me a ride to the sand bank, please?" he called. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
We didn't see why not, it was on the way, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
so we picked him up and we sped off. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
From our sea carpet we spotted | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
Mr and Mrs Cod and their two tiddlers dragging home the shopping. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:55
"Do you want a lift home, Mrs Cod, with your shopping? | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
"We could drop you off, it's on our way." | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
"Well, we don't usually ask for lifts, it's up to Harold," she said. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
Well, Mr Cod had a brief think about this, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
but before he had a chance to say anything, Mrs Cod announced, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
"Harold says yes." | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
"Right, dear," said Harold. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
And they all climbed aboard. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
It was crowded on the carpet with Seahorse, | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
Mr and Mrs Cod and two tiddlers together with Salty and me, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
and the weight, the weight was slowing the carpet down. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
At this rate we'd never get back to Staithes. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
And then something terrible happened. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
"Watch out..." Mr Cod suddenly shouted in alarm. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
"..fishing net!" | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
With a whoosh, the fish all scarpered quickly, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
as a large net swept towards us. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
Who did the net belong to? | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
Well, I'll tell you. Kitty Cutlass was on board our ship, The Rainbow. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
"I've already made a catch and it feels like something big," | 0:09:57 | 0:10:02
she laughed. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
So, imagine her surprise when what | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
she fished out of the net was Salty and me and a soggy carpet. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:13
And imagine my surprise to find I was back aboard The Rainbow. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:18
"Ah, but she's my boat now," Kitty smirked. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:23
Oh, that got me ruffled, I can tell you, and Salty's whiskers, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
they began to whiffle at an alarming rate. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
But then I had an idea. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
"I'll offer you a swap, Kitty. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
"You give us The Rainbow back, | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
"and we'll give you this magic carpet," I suggested. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
Salty, she was horrified. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
We were giving Shelly's gift away, and to Kitty Cutlass, of all people. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:51
Well, of course, the greedy pirate couldn't resist, could she? | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
"Hmmm, a magic carpet! That's got to be better than a silly old boat." | 0:10:55 | 0:11:00
So, we swapped. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
We got our beloved Rainbow back, | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
and Kitty Cutlass took the magic carpet onto her boat | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
and immediately sat on it, waiting for it to fly. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
But nothing happened. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:14
Well, of course it didn't. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
What Kitty didn't know, it was a magic sea carpet, and anyway, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
she didn't know the magical words, either. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
"Stupid carpet," she said, crossly. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
And she threw it over the side, as I always knew she would. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:33
And then she sailed off in a grump. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
Salty and I fished the carpet out of the water and hung it out to dry. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:43
By the time we got back to Staithes it was dry | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
and in perfect condition to give to Shelly. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
And do you know what Shelly did with it? | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
She put it down outside her cafe as a special place for Salty to | 0:11:52 | 0:11:59
curl up contentedly and enjoy its sniffy old smells. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:04
Hee-hee-hee. Wasn't that nice of her? | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
TOOT! TOOT! | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
Did you like that story, Salty? | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
All true, of course. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
Mind you, my stories always are! Ho-ho-ho! | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
Well, Ernie, you ready for your birthday surprise? | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
It'll be more of a surprise for Shelly. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
-Eh? -Look. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
Oh, no. That an accident? | 0:12:45 | 0:12:49
Oh, never mind. Come on, perhaps we had better go and tell her. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:54
I suppose so. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:55
Bring it with you. Ho-ho-ho! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
Come on down, dog. That's it. Oh, dear me. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
Ernie, have you come for your birthday surprise? | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
I've come to tell you about the birthday cake. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
What, this one? | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
My birthday cake! | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
You baked me another one. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
You are magic, Shelly. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
Happy birthday, Ernie! | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
Thank you, Shelly. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:21
-I thought you were going to put more fishes on it? -I did. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
What? | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29 | |
You're right, I'm going to have to get my eyes tested! | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
Come on, everybody, who's for birthday cake? | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
Now, hang on, that's mine. That one's mine. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
Well, Salty, that's it for today, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
we'll see all our friends again next time. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
Oh, and we'll see you next time, as well. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
Bye-bye. Come on, girl. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
