Come on, up here. Come on. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
-Oh, Miss Bowline-Hitch, no tricycle today? -Broken. It won't go! | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
Sam's repairing it for me. It's very inconvenient. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
-Oh, well, I'm sure she'll get it fixed very soon. -I hope so! | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
-I need it for this afternoon. I'm very busy today, very busy-busy! -Yes. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:04
Come on, Salty, we'll see how Sam's getting on. Busy-busy! | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
-Oh, all right, Jack? Salty! -Hello, Sam, how's it going? | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
No problem, just a simple matter of replacing the bearings, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
oiling the, um...something else. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
-Are you sure you know what you're doing? -Of course I do. Oh! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
BANG! CRASH! | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
I'll fix that later. I'm making a list. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
I think Miss Bowline-Hitch needs it back soon. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
-She's very... -Busy-busy? -Yeah, that's what she said. -Oh, dear! | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
-Did she say when she wanted it for? -She wants it for this afternoon. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
-Oh, dear! -Is that a problem? | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Well, Jack, to be honest, I'm better with scooters. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
They're simpler. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Three-wheeled cycles are a bit complicated for me! | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
CRASH! BANG! | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
-I'll add that to the list. -I think you've got your work cut out there. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
-I'll leave you to it. Good luck! -Thanks, Jack. -Yeah, bye-bye. -Bye! | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
-Come on, Salty. Bye. -Oh, dear. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
There she is - the Rainbow. What have you got for us today, m'dear? | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
Hee-hee! Come on, Salty. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
# Dee-dee, dee-dee. # | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
Here we are. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:31
You settle down there, girl. Poor old Sam, eh? | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
She's got a bit of a job on her hands | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
fixing that tricycle, you know. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
Wonder if I have any old tools here that she could... | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
What's this? | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
Bubble mixture. What is that doing in here? Hmm? Eh? | 0:03:53 | 0:03:58
It's yours, isn't it, Salty? You were... | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
You're always losing that. I don't know...ha! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Do you remember the last time we lost your bubble mixture? Ha-ha! | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
That was a bit of an adventure, that was. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
Oh, let me get myself comfortable and I'll tell you the story. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
What are you doing? | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
This is going to make your whiskers stand on end, girl. Ha-ha-ha! | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
And as we sailed, we sang. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
# Just Salty dog and me are sailing on the sea | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
# There's many a thing we know we should fix | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
# But we prefer trying our favourite tricks | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
# Drifting away on a hot sunny day | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
# Just Salty dog and me. # | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
Now, on this particular day, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
Salty wanted to practise her bubble-blowing tricks. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
She's very good at blowing bubbles. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
I fetched her bottle of bubble mix | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
and Salty's special bubble-blowing wand. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
I dipped the wand in the bubble mix | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
and then held it up like this. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
Salty then blew a huge bubble. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
I think it must have been the biggest bubble Salty had ever blown. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
It got so big it almost filled the deck of the Rainbow. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
"Oh, that's a real corker!" I said. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
But just as Salty was considering giving up being a sea dog | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
and starting a career in the circus...BANG! | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
The bubble popped! | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
And as it popped, it knocked the bottle of bubble mixture | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
over the side of the Rainbow and...PLOP! | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
Into the deep sea. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
"Aaaaarrr!" howled Salty. "My bubble mix!" | 0:05:45 | 0:05:51
And we watched it disappear down and down. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
"Don't worry, girl," I said, "We'll get it back." | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
So, before you could say "limboing lobsters" | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
we were under the waves in search of Salty's bubble mixture. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
We wandered for a while and we hadn't gone far | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
when a very handsome cardinalfish, | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
all silvery-greyish with black stripes, | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
appeared from a thick clump of seaweed. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
"Hello!" I said, "We've lost a bottle of bubble mixture, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
"you haven't seen it, have you?" | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
The cardinalfish twitched his tail | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
and swam in circles around the seaweed | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
but he didn't say anything, not a word. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
"Perhaps he's shy," said Salty. Mr and Mrs Cod swam by. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:39
"Bubble mixture?" said Mrs Cod, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
"We haven't seen anything, have we, Harold?" | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
"No, dear," said Mr Cod. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
"And it's no use asking Natty, the cardinalfish," | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
Mrs Cod continued. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
"He used to be ever so chatty but he hasn't said a word for days." | 0:06:50 | 0:06:55
She was right. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Natty didn't say anything, he just kept twitching his tail | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
and swimming around the seaweed. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
"I think he wants us to follow him," I said. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
"Yeah. Come on, Salty, we may come across the bubble mix on the way. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
"Come on, this way!" | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
So...off we went. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:14
It was me, Salty and Mr and Mrs Cod following Natty around the seaweed. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
Round and round the seaweed, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
again and again and Salty was starting to get dizzy! | 0:07:22 | 0:07:27
"We seem to be going around and round the same patch of seaweed," | 0:07:27 | 0:07:32
I said to Natty. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:33
Well, Natty seemed quite upset by this. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
He twitched his tail more than ever. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
"We need to find our bubble mixture," I continued. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
Suddenly, Natty opened his mouth. "Look in the seaweed!" he blurted. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:50
He was right. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:51
Nestled in the seaweed was the little bottle of bubble mixture. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:56
Salty was thrilled! | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
But Natty wasn't. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
As he had opened his mouth to speak to us, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
you'll never believe what happened. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
Lots and lots of teeny, tiny, shimmery little fishes swam out. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:13
"My fry, my fry, my baby fish! They're escaping!" Natty cried. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:18
"They're not big enough to be free in the sea yet." | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
And then, I remembered. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
A daddy cardinalfish | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
looks after his eggs in his mouth until they hatch out into fry - | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
that's baby fish - and until they grow big enough to swim in the sea. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:36
"Oh, dear. Natty was looking after the fry in his mouth," I said. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:41
"No wonder he wasn't chatty, Harold," said Mrs Cod. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
"No, dear," said Mr Cod. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:46
Well, the tiny fry were now drifting off in all directions | 0:08:46 | 0:08:51
like dandelion seeds on the wind. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
"Wahey! We're in the big sea!" they cried. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
"Quick! They're not safe!" cried Natty. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
"I need to keep them in my mouth for a few more days | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
"until they're a bit bigger. I don't want to lose them!" | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
"We'll help you catch them," I said. "But how?" | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
And then Salty's whiskers whistled. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
She was having one of her bright ideas. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
She dashed into the seaweed and grabbed the bubble mix | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
from its seaweedy hiding place and brought it back to me. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
"Salty," I said, "this is no time for blowing bubbles." | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
But Salty announced it was the perfect time for blowing bubbles, | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
so I took out the bubble wand, I held it up and Salty blew. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:37
She blew out a huge bubble. Her biggest yet. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:44
And it wafted and bobbled and hovered and wobbled | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
and scooped up all the little fry inside it. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
Salty then blew the bubble in Natty's direction. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
"Oh, oh, here they come! My little fry!" Natty cried. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
As the bubble settled over him, he popped it with his nose | 0:09:59 | 0:10:05
and the teeny-tiny fry all dropped gently back into his mouth | 0:10:05 | 0:10:12
where they were safe again. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
"Bye-bye!" said the little fry. "See you when we're bigger!" | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
Mrs Cod was very impressed. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
"Salty is an excellent bubble blower, | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
"isn't she, Harold?" she said. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
"Yes, dear." said Mr Cod. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
Natty, he flicked his tail happily. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
"Salty," I said, "I think that is Natty's way of saying thank you | 0:10:32 | 0:10:37
"without opening his mouth again." | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
And Natty nodded happily. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Salty gave Natty a nuzzle with her nose. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
She was very pleased that his fry were safe | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
and, of course, she was very happy | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
that we had found her bubble mixture. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
"Come on, Salty! Time to be getting back to Staithes," I said. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:02
So, we said our goodbyes | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
and before you could say "somersaulting seagulls" | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
we were back on board our beloved Rainbow, heading for the horizon. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:14
As the evening sun shone on the deck, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Salty practised her bubble-blowing tricks and she didn't stop | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
until we were back in Staithes and home again. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
Did you like that story, Salty? All true, of course. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
Mind you, my stories always are. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
DOOR OPENS | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
How are you doing with Miss Bowline-Hitch's tricycle, Sam? | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
Not good, Jack, not good! How long have I got? | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
-Uh, well, I'm not really sure. -Yoo-hoo! -Huh! | 0:11:57 | 0:12:02
-She's back! Don't let her in. -No. Leave this to me. Come along, Salty. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:08
-Hello, Jack! -Oh, ha-ha! Miss Bowline-Hitch. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
-About your tricycle... -It should be ready by now. Busy-busy. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
-Well, it's like this... -Busy-busy! | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
Oh, dear. Oh, dear, Salty. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
Miss Bowline-Hitch is not going to be too pleased | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
about her tricycle lying in bits in there. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
Well, at least nobody's shouting! | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
Ha-ha! Oh! | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
-Right, Miss Bowline-Hitch, all sorted? -I'm very pleased. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
-VERY pleased indeed. -Oh, really? -Yes, look! | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
My tricycle wasn't ready, so Sam's lent me this marvellous scooter! | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
-It's just right. -Of course. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
Now, I really must be on my way. Busy-busy! | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
Good luck. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:54
-Well, that worked out better than I thought it would! -Well done, Sam. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
You made a busy lady very happy! | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
Good. I'll have it all fixed by tomorrow. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
-Now, I'd like to make a busy old sailor happy too. -Really? | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
Let me buy you a cup of tea at the Mermaid. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
Thank you very much, you're on. Oh, could I do with a cup of tea! | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
Well, Salty, that's it for today. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
We'll see all our friends again next time. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
Oh, and we'll see you next time as well. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
Bye-bye! Come on, girl. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32 |
