And three white mice

Now, where's Mother?

0:01:130:01:15

Ah, that makes five!

Four baby kittens and one mother cat.

0:02:150:02:20

Sometimes the names of some animals' babies

0:02:210:02:26

are called something different.

0:02:260:02:29

See if you know any of these.

0:02:290:02:31

Here's a dog. A mother dog.

0:02:340:02:37

0:03:300:03:33

But sometimes they hiss.

0:03:330:03:35

Ssss! Ssss!

0:03:350:03:37

And her babies are called something different.

0:03:390:03:42

0:06:570:07:01

Another one here.

0:07:010:07:03

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.

0:07:040:07:10

Do you think that's an animal?

0:07:100:07:12

No. It's the clock.

0:07:150:07:17

Do you know what time it's saying?

0:07:180:07:20

The long hand is pointing straight up,

0:07:200:07:23

so that means it's something o'clock.

0:07:230:07:25

And the short hand, that's pointing straight down.

0:07:250:07:28

It's pointing at the number...6.

0:07:280:07:31

So today the clock says 6 o'clock.

0:07:310:07:34

Do you think it's saying the same time as the Play School clock?

0:07:360:07:40

Yes. It is.

MUSIC PLAYS

0:07:510:07:54

A duck looking at her egg.

0:07:540:07:57

A very large egg.

0:07:570:07:59

Once on a farm, there was a duck,

0:08:160:08:21

a mother duck.

0:08:210:08:23

And she was sitting on her eggs, keeping them warm

0:08:230:08:27

until they hatched out.

0:08:270:08:29

Well, she'd been sat on the eggs for several weeks, when one day...

0:08:310:08:36

..kwk, kwk, kwk...kwk, kwk...

0:08:380:08:42

one of the eggs hatched out

0:08:420:08:44

and there was one yellow fluffy duckling.

0:08:440:08:49

Then...kwk, kwk, kwk, kwk, kwk...

0:08:490:08:52

two yellow fluffy ducklings!

0:08:520:08:56

And then, kwk, kwk, kwk, kwk, another egg hatched out -

0:08:560:09:01

another yellow fluffy duckling.

0:09:010:09:04

Kwk, kwk, kwk, another yellow fluffy duckling.

0:09:040:09:08

Kwk, kwk, kwk, kwk, and another.

0:09:080:09:11

Five yellow fluffy ducklings.

0:09:110:09:14

But the sixth one, the sixth egg just wouldn't hatch out.

0:09:170:09:21

So the mother duck sat on it for another day, keeping it warm.

0:09:230:09:27

And then another day.

0:09:280:09:30

And another day.

0:09:300:09:32

And she was just about to give up when, all of a sudden,

0:09:320:09:36

kwk, kwk, kwk, kwk...

0:09:360:09:40

the other egg hatched out.

0:09:400:09:42

But it wasn't a yellow fluffy duckling.

0:09:420:09:45

It was a sort of big, awkward-looking, grey duckling.

0:09:450:09:50

"Oh, dear," said Mother Duck. "Oh, dear. That's a very ugly duckling."

0:09:500:09:56

"Never mind," she said. "Come along, children.

0:09:560:09:59

"Quack, quack, quack, quack."

0:09:590:10:00

And she waddled off down to the river

0:10:000:10:03

to teach her newborn ducklings how to swim.

0:10:030:10:06

Well, the yellow ducklings - straight into the water.

0:10:060:10:10

They could swim straight away.

0:10:100:10:13

And so could the big grey one.

0:10:130:10:15

But some of the animals came down from the farm nearby

0:10:150:10:18

to watch the ducklings taking to the water for the first time.

0:10:180:10:22

Cat sat on the river bank. "Meow, meow."

0:10:220:10:27

Then he spotted the big grey duckling.

0:10:270:10:29

"Meow. Well, it swims like a duck,

0:10:290:10:33

"so I suppose it must be one.

0:10:330:10:36

"Meow. Meow."

0:10:360:10:39

Then the hen came along. "Bwk, bwk, bwk! Oh, goodness me!

0:10:390:10:43

"Bwk, bwk, bwk! What's that? Bwk, bwk! Funny-looking thing, isn't it?

0:10:430:10:46

"Bwk, bwk, bwk! Oh, what a shame! Bwk, bwk, bwk!"

0:10:460:10:51

Then the pig came by.

0:10:510:10:52

HE SNORTS

0:10:520:10:54

"Well, I've seen some things in my time," said Pig.

0:10:540:10:57

"But that big, ugly, grey duckling there...

0:10:570:10:59

HE SNORTS

0:10:590:11:00

"Must look like his father."

0:11:000:11:02

HE SNORTS

0:11:020:11:04

Then Sheep came by.

0:11:040:11:06

"Baa. Baa!

0:11:060:11:08

"Well," said Sheep, "baa! If those ducklings were mine,

0:11:080:11:12

"I'd count the yellow fluffy ones as mine, but not that grey one.

0:11:120:11:17

"Baa. Baa!"

0:11:170:11:19

By this time, the grey duckling was getting a bit fed up with all this.

0:11:200:11:25

And then when the other yellow fluffy ducklings

0:11:250:11:28

started to tease him,

0:11:280:11:30

he decided to go off down the river on his own.

0:11:300:11:34

So he swam off down the river to get a bit of peace and quiet.

0:11:340:11:39

And he stayed down the river for quite a long time.

0:11:390:11:42

One day, he was sitting by the river bank

0:11:430:11:46

just minding his own business,

0:11:460:11:48

when he saw some great big beautiful white birds

0:11:480:11:53

swimming down towards him.

0:11:530:11:55

And they had great big long white necks and huge white feathers.

0:11:550:12:00

"Oh," thought the grey duckling, "if only I looked like that."

0:12:010:12:05

Well, just as they were going past him,

0:12:070:12:09

one of these big beautiful white birds stopped

0:12:090:12:13

and, looking at the duckling, said, "Look, look, everybody,

0:12:130:12:18

"here's a beautiful white swan."

0:12:180:12:20

The ugly duckling thought, "They're looking at me."

0:12:210:12:24

So he looked in the water at his reflection.

0:12:240:12:27

And he had a beautiful long white neck

0:12:270:12:30

and beautiful big white feathers, just like these other birds.

0:12:300:12:35

He was a swan.

0:12:350:12:36

"I am, I'm a swan," he said to himself.

0:12:360:12:40

"My egg must have got mixed up with those duck eggs.

0:12:410:12:44

"I'm not a duck at all. I'm a swan!"

0:12:440:12:47

"Wait for me!" he cried, "Wait for me."

0:12:470:12:50

And off he swam up the river with all the other swans.

0:12:500:12:53

You see, he wasn't an ugly duckling at all.

0:12:530:12:56

He was a beautiful white swan.

0:12:580:13:01

# I'm not just an ugly duckling

0:13:040:13:09

# No feathers all stubby and brown

0:13:090:13:13

# "Yes, the best Yes, quite the best

0:13:210:13:25

# "You're the best around"

0:13:250:13:28

# Not a quack, not a quack, not a waddle or a quack

0:13:280:13:32

# But a glide and a whistle and a snowy white back

0:13:320:13:38

# And a head so noble and high

0:13:380:13:43

# Say, who's an ugly duckling?

0:13:430:13:49

# Not I! #

0:13:490:13:51

HE WHISTLES TUNE

0:13:510:13:53

Some paper swans for the paper garden.

0:14:070:14:11

I'll make another one.

0:14:120:14:14

All you need is a bit of plasticine.

0:14:140:14:17

And a tiny bit of pipe cleaner.

0:14:170:14:19

Bend the pipe cleaner...

0:14:210:14:23

to look like a swan's head.

0:14:230:14:26

Then a long neck.

0:14:260:14:27

Like that.

0:14:310:14:34

Stick the plasticine on.

0:14:340:14:35

There.

0:14:400:14:41

There's the neck and the body.

0:14:430:14:45

Now all you need is some wings.

0:14:450:14:47

Piece of paper. Fold it in half.

0:14:490:14:53

Then I'll just cut out half a heart shape.

0:14:530:14:57

Like that.

0:15:130:15:16

That's going to become the swan's wings.

0:15:160:15:19

Put the body in the middle.

0:15:190:15:21

There's another swan.

0:15:300:15:32

Put him in the garden, too.

0:15:320:15:34

Swans belong to whoever is king or queen.

0:15:440:15:47

And that's what the children are pretending to be

0:15:470:15:50

in the poem this week.

0:15:500:15:51

They're pretending to be a king and queen in their own garden.

0:19:160:19:19

BIRD CALLS

0:19:270:19:30

Tall trees.

0:19:340:19:35

They're called poplars.

0:19:360:19:38

And the floppy trees are willows.

0:19:400:19:43

What's that?

0:19:460:19:47

It's a baby swan.

0:19:510:19:54

There's the swans. Two grown-up swans

0:19:540:19:57

and one baby.

0:19:570:19:59

He's called a cygnet.

0:20:000:20:02

Some people are having a quiet sail along the river.

Five white mice.

0:22:280:22:31

How many pets are there altogether?

0:22:310:22:34

Well, there's five white mice.

0:22:350:22:38

COCKATOO SQUAWKS

0:22:400:22:41

And there's Katoo. That makes six.

0:23:020:23:06

Quack.

0:23:080:23:10

Quack, quack.

0:23:100:23:12

Do you know how this pop-up works?

0:23:120:23:15

It's a cone with a stick going through it

0:23:150:23:18

and this stuck on the stick.

0:23:180:23:20

It's an old cheese box

0:23:200:23:23

with a picture on one side...

0:23:230:23:25

and a different picture on the other.

0:23:250:23:28

You could use any kind of picture, really.

0:23:280:23:30

And then when it goes down into the cone, you can twist it

0:23:300:23:34

and up it comes with the other side. So you go...

0:23:340:23:37

Quack.

0:23:370:23:38

Quack, quack.

0:23:400:23:42

Quack.

0:23:420:23:43

Quack, quack.

0:23:430:23:46

Time for us to go now.

0:23:460:23:48

But perhaps you'd like to make some white paper swans.

0:23:480:23:51

-Till tomorrow, goodbye.

-Goodbye.
