Ah! Hello there! | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
I'm Old Jack and this is Salty. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
Salty loves living here with me | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
and she often has adventures of her own. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
So, are you sitting comfortably? | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
Good. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36 | |
Then I'll tell you one of Salty's Waggy Tales! | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
HOOTER BLOWS | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
It was washing and cleaning day in Staithes. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
Once every month, all of Salty's precious things | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
got washed and cleaned. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
Her basket was brushed, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
her special carpet was swept | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
and her blue blankie was washed. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Now, in all the world, the one thing Salty hated | 0:00:59 | 0:01:04
was having her blue blankie washed. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
"It doesn't need washing!" she howled. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
"I like its smelly smells. I like it the way it is now!" | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
Well, this particular day, Salty was so fed up | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
with having her blankie washed she decided to hide it. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
She trotted through Staithes, looking for a place to put it | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
and, before long, she'd gone as far as the lifeboat station | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
and there, beside the long wall, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
was a large pile of lobster pots. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
The perfect place to hide a blankie! | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Salty carefully pushed the blankie underneath a lobster pot | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
and was very pleased with the results. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
You could hardly see it. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
But then, the fishermen came by | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
and one by one they picked up the lobster pots | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
and carried them off to their boats. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Eventually, there were no lobster pots left on the quayside at all. | 0:01:55 | 0:02:00
Just Salty's blue blankie. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Salty decided she needed a better place to hide it. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:08
So she picked it up and carried it over the bridge | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
and down an alleyway until she found the perfect spot. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
On a wall sat a cardboard box - | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
she could hide blue blankie in the cardboard box | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
until washing and cleaning day was over. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
"He-he! Perfect!" | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
She dropped it into the cardboard box | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
and looked very pleased with herself. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
But what Salty didn't realise was that today was also bins day, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:39
and all the rubbish in Staithes was being collected and taken away | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
to be dropped into the big, noisy dustcart. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
Before you could say "smelly blankets", | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
the box was picked up and taken away. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
"No!" barked Salty. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
She didn't want blue blankie to be squished and squashed | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
in the back of a dust cart! | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
The lady collecting the rubbish must have heard Salty's barking | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
because she stopped what she was doing and looked at Salty. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
Then she looked inside the box and smiled. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
She rummaged around and pulled blue blankie out, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
then she carefully hung it on a wall | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
for Salty to gather up. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
Salty was very, very grateful. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
No more cardboard boxes for her, | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
she needed to find somewhere much safer to hide blue blankie. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
And then she saw the perfect place. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
It was on the back garden of a house. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
A lovely basket that was just right for putting blankies in. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
She sneaked into the garden | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
and carefully put blue blankie in the basket | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
where it would be safe. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
But Salty was wrong. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
It wasn't safe at all. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
A man came out of his house picked the basket up | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
and put blue blankie straight in the washing machine | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
with some other clothes. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:07
It was a laundry basket! | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
The worst place to hide a blue blankie | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
that you didn't want to be washed. Oh. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Salty had to wait for an hour | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
for blue blankie to come out of the washing machine | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
and then another three hours for it to dry! | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
But when she finally got her blankie | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
down from the washing line, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
it smelt clean and fresh | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
and, well, not too bad, really. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
"Perhaps I should hide blue blankie in laundry baskets more often," | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
thought Salty, as she trotted back down the street. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
All the way back to The Rainbow and home. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
Lovely old Salty! | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
She's the best dog in the world. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53 |
