0:01:390:01:40

-Hi, I'm Rehab.

-And I'm Adam.

-Today, we're going to be lock-keepers.

0:01:400:01:45

-BOTH:

-Let's go!

0:01:450:01:46

This is the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

0:01:460:01:50

When a boat needs to go up or downhill, along a canal or a river,

0:01:500:01:56

a lock is used to help them.

0:01:560:01:58

On each side of the lock, there are gates that let the water get

0:01:580:02:02

in or out, which helps the boats go up and down.

0:02:020:02:06

And the lock-keeper looks after the canals.

0:02:060:02:09

They welcome and help boaters travel along them.

0:02:090:02:13

Darren will be showing us what we need to do.

0:02:130:02:17

We need to listen very carefully, so that we stay safe.

0:02:170:02:21

Would you like to go to the locks so you're nice and safe?

0:02:210:02:26

I'd love to, and are you going to help?

0:02:260:02:28

Yes.

0:02:280:02:29

So, we're going to open this ground paddle,

0:02:320:02:35

which allows the water to come out underneath the boats,

0:02:350:02:39

and raises them slowly and gently -

0:02:390:02:41

-and safely, which is the main thing.

-Do the boats come up fast?

0:02:410:02:45

Not if we do it nice and gently, just nice and steady

0:02:450:02:48

and make sure they don't get banged about.

0:02:480:02:51

Darren is turning the paddle.

0:02:510:02:53

First, we set the water levels just right.

0:02:530:02:57

So, we just do three turns.

0:02:570:02:59

Put our safety hook on,

0:02:590:03:01

and then have a look and make sure there's not much going in.

0:03:010:03:04

Cos if you put it in too quickly and bash them about,

0:03:040:03:08

they start going, "Don't bash me about!"

0:03:080:03:10

Oh! Shall I help you?

0:03:120:03:14

-No!

-Sorry!

0:03:140:03:16

'We open the gates for the boat to go through.

0:03:160:03:20

'Two narrow boats can fit into this lock.'

0:03:200:03:22

Come on through!

0:03:220:03:24

This boat needs to go up the hill.

0:03:270:03:29

Now it's time to close the gates and let the water into this lock.

0:03:290:03:33

Darren closes the paddle.

0:03:330:03:35

So the boat is on the same level as the next part of the canal.

0:03:350:03:40

And off it goes to the next part of the lock.

0:03:400:03:44

The locks need to be looked after so they can be used for a long time.

0:03:450:03:50

These locks are over 240 years old.

0:03:500:03:53

We'll need these because you'll help me oil and grease the gates

0:03:530:03:57

-and the paddles.

-Thank you, Darren.

-You're more than welcome.

0:03:570:04:01

There you go, nice big bit of grease for you.

0:04:010:04:04

I'll turn, you get the grease on. That's it, get it all over.

0:04:040:04:08

Easier to use, is that. Fantastic job.

0:04:080:04:11

What is that big brush for?

0:04:110:04:13

This is a greasing brush that we use to grease

0:04:130:04:17

this type of gearing, so we can keep far away and not get it all over.

0:04:170:04:21

That's it. Bit down here, as well.

0:04:230:04:26

-Is that enough grease now, Darren?

-That's plenty.

0:04:260:04:29

We need to run the gearing up and down once, to make sure

0:04:290:04:33

it's all running beautiful for the future.

0:04:330:04:36

Oh, look at that! Lovely jubbly!

0:04:360:04:38

-Like it were brand-new. Thank you very much.

-You're welcome.

0:04:400:04:44

Now, we're going to do some painting.

0:04:440:04:46

We're painting the beam which helps to protect it.

0:04:460:04:50

Do you think you'll work for us when you get older?

0:04:500:04:53

-Yeah.

-Yeah, would you like it?

-Yeah.

0:04:530:04:55

-Adam, would you like to do some painting?

-Yeah.

0:04:550:04:58

You missed a bit there.

0:04:580:05:00

You're doing a really good job, though.

0:05:000:05:02

We're on a work boat.

0:05:020:05:04

We're not here just for fun, we're here for more jobs!

0:05:040:05:08

You guys want to come and give me a hand?

0:05:080:05:11

We're scraping the green moss off the wall.

0:05:110:05:14

This helps to keep the canal clear and tidy.

0:05:140:05:18

-Adam, what's been the best part of your day?

-Scraping.

0:05:180:05:21

Rehab, what's been the best part?

0:05:220:05:25

Scraping the walls and the gates.

0:05:250:05:27

Oh! Been good to have you, you've been a big help.

0:05:270:05:30

You're doing a good job!

0:05:300:05:32

-Can we go through another gate?

-Course we can!

0:05:340:05:37

-ALL:

-Come on, Captain!

0:05:370:05:38

Oh, great work, Rehab and Adam! You both made excellent lock-keepers.

0:05:450:05:49

Now, we're excited in the clubhouse today because we're joined

0:05:490:05:54

by illustrator Korky Paul and some book-loving Let's-Goers.

0:05:540:05:58

-Hi, everyone! ALL:

-Hello!

0:05:580:05:59

Korky, you've illustrated loads

0:05:590:06:01

of children's books, including the spooky Winnie books.

0:06:010:06:06

-Why do you love drawing so much?

-When I was your age,

0:06:060:06:09

I just loved drawing and I loved doing crazy drawings like cartoons.

0:06:090:06:13

Lovely. Hey, Soph, do you have a question?

0:06:130:06:16

Please could you give us some tips for our drawing?

0:06:160:06:19

Top tip, Sophie, is draw every day. Do you do that?

0:06:190:06:22

-Yeah.

-We would love for you to draw us a spooky picture.

0:06:220:06:26

-We can draw a monster!

-Draw a monster?

-Yeah!

0:06:260:06:29

-What shall we call the monster?

-Tusk.

-Tusk?

0:06:290:06:32

So now, the first thing we're going to do...

0:06:320:06:35

is give him some eyes. Right, so let's draw some eyes.

0:06:350:06:40

-I think he should have scary eyes!

-OK. So, he's got eyes.

0:06:400:06:44

-Who wants an elephant nose?

-Ooh!

-Elephant nose is good,

0:06:440:06:48

we like elephant noses. We've got an elephant nose here

0:06:480:06:51

and a little thing on the end.

0:06:510:06:53

Right, little thing on the end, like that.

0:06:530:06:56

-OK.

-Looking good.

0:06:560:06:58

Who wants floppy rabbit ears? Or shall we do big elephant ears?

0:06:580:07:02

-Yeah!

-Big ears.

-Yeah, big elephant ears, like that.

0:07:020:07:05

Who likes snappy crocodile teeth?

0:07:050:07:08

-Oh, me!

-Yes!

0:07:080:07:09

Chika-chika-chika...

0:07:090:07:11

OK, and then we have a big mouth like that. Chika-chika-chika...

0:07:110:07:15

-Wow.

-Do some little arms here.

-A body!

-And a body, yes.

0:07:150:07:19

-Let's give him a nice, round body here.

-Oh, well cool!

0:07:190:07:22

Ducks' legs? Will we give him one frog leg and one duck leg?

0:07:220:07:26

-Now, what's special about frogs' legs?

-They're green!

0:07:260:07:29

-And they've got those little...?

-Webs?

-Fingers!

-Well done.

0:07:290:07:33

Their feet have little webs. That little thing there.

0:07:330:07:37

You're going to have the other leg up here.

0:07:370:07:39

Shall we do that? Little ankle. How's that look?

0:07:390:07:43

-Shall we give him a tail?

-Yeah.

0:07:430:07:44

-Shall we give him little spikes?

-Yeah.

0:07:440:07:47

THEY GIGGLE

0:07:470:07:49

Look at that!

0:07:490:07:50

We've got some watercolours.

0:07:500:07:52

What's special about watercolour is it loves water.

0:07:520:07:55

The first thing to do is you do your light colours first, OK?

0:07:550:07:59

-Yellow!

-Let's do a little bit of yellow. Oh, look at that!

0:07:590:08:02

If we put blue on top of yellow, what colour's it going to go?

0:08:020:08:06

-Green!

-Well done. Let's take a little bit of blue.

0:08:060:08:09

-Oh, look at that. Little bit of green.

-It's green!

-Nice!

0:08:090:08:13

OK, a little bit of blue back there.

0:08:130:08:15

Oh, you see now, I didn't wash my brush.

0:08:150:08:17

You see how dirty it went? Clean the brush off again, let's take red.

0:08:170:08:22

-When you put red on yellow, what colour do you get?

-Orange!

0:08:220:08:25

Right! Now, what's a good colour for frogs' legs?

0:08:250:08:29

-ALL:

-Green!

-Green!

0:08:290:08:30

Look at that. Bit of green in there.

0:08:300:08:32

-What's a good colour for ducks' legs?

-Yellow!

0:08:320:08:35

Oh, look at that! Nice.

0:08:350:08:37

-Shall we give him a nice tongue?

-He looks really funny!

0:08:370:08:41

There you go. And then we put a little signature over here.

0:08:410:08:45

-There you go!

-Fantastic! What a brilliant picture!

0:08:450:08:48

Why don't you use some of Korky's tips to create

0:08:480:08:52

a picture on the CBeebies website?

0:08:520:08:54

OK, Korky. How do you fancy seeing some spooky Send-Ins?

0:08:540:08:58

Oh, we love spooky Send-Ins cos they're scary!

0:08:580:09:01

Woohoo!

0:09:010:09:03

Let's-Goer Thomas is showing off the pumpkin

0:09:070:09:10

he picked and his spooky skeleton costume.

0:09:100:09:12

And this is six-year-old Theo,

0:09:120:09:14

who made a frighteningly good paper pumpkin.

0:09:140:09:17

Sophia's created a creepy Halloween basket from the CBeebies website.

0:09:170:09:22

She's making more designs for her friends.

0:09:220:09:25

Here's four-year-old Lily doing a robot dance in her home-made

0:09:250:09:29

robot costume. Robo-brilliant!

0:09:290:09:32

And this is Let's-Goer Ronny,

0:09:320:09:34

who created a robot of his very own, called Robert!

0:09:340:09:37

Matthew, Sophie, Theo and Holly all loved getting messy,

0:09:380:09:42

making gooey robo-slime!

0:09:420:09:44

And Isla Rose had lots of fun gluing and painting her shiny silver robot.

0:09:440:09:50

If you've been inspired or if you've made something

0:09:500:09:54

you want to share,

0:09:540:09:56

send it over. Grab a grown-up,

0:09:560:09:58

visit the CBeebies website, and look for The Let's Go Club.

0:09:580:10:01

-Korky, thank you for joining us!

-It was great,

0:10:010:10:04

I had a lot of fun! Thank you.

0:10:040:10:06

Now, I've just seen Craig pulling a load of costumes

0:10:060:10:09

out of our dressing-up box.

0:10:090:10:11

Craig, what ARE you up to?

0:10:110:10:13

This isn't a costume, Lizzie!

0:10:130:10:16

I am Chef Craig, king of the kitchen!

0:10:160:10:19

It was the Great British Bake-Off final on Wednesday,

0:10:190:10:24

so, to celebrate, I thought I'd dish up a load of your brilliant bakes!

0:10:240:10:29

First up, Freya!

0:10:310:10:33

No soggy bottom on YOUR pineapple upside-down cake.

0:10:330:10:37

Harry, your colourful cupcakes make you a baking chomp-ion!

0:10:370:10:42

And, Bethany, you're the cream of the crop

0:10:420:10:46

with your home-made ice cream!

0:10:460:10:48

Wow! What super show stoppers!

0:10:500:10:52

I think you all deserve to be crowned star bakers. Well done!

0:10:520:10:58

It's time to get your singing voices ready,

0:10:580:11:01

for this little ditty about the festival of lights.

0:13:210:13:22

Those were some fantastic facts about Diwali.

0:13:220:13:26

That music really makes me want to dance.

0:13:260:13:28

Hey. Guess what monster loves to dance?

0:13:280:13:32

The...

0:13:320:13:33

Boogieman!

0:13:330:13:35

Well, I'm dressed up as Frankenstein's Monster,

0:13:350:13:38

ready for today's Halloween Club Dance.

0:13:380:13:41

And the dance I'm going to be teaching you

0:13:410:13:44

is called the Monster Shuffle.

0:13:440:13:46

It's called this because it looks like a monster

0:13:460:13:49

that's having a bit of a boogie.

0:13:490:13:51

It's really simple to do.

0:13:510:13:53

Here's how. The first step is to put our arms up like this,

0:13:530:13:57

and then move from side to side.

0:13:570:14:00

Remember to be as stiff as you can,

0:14:000:14:02

so you look like a monster that's having a boogie!

0:14:020:14:06

And that's it! The Monster Shuffle.

0:14:060:14:08

I'm going to be using this in the Club Dance later on,

0:14:080:14:11

so keep on practising. But, before that,

0:14:110:14:14

let's take a look at some of your Send-Ins.

0:14:140:14:16

Leo and Chloe have made some spooky bats out of cardboard tubes.

0:14:160:14:21

0:14:270:14:28

Five-year-old Dylan is rocking out his home-made guitar.

0:14:280:14:32

Sounding good, Dylan!

0:14:320:14:34

Seven-year-old Charlotte has really cooked up a treat,

0:14:340:14:38

with her chocolate cupcakes.

0:14:380:14:40

Delicious!

0:14:400:14:42

Here's four-year-old Tom,

0:14:420:14:44

dressed up as an English knight in shining armour.

0:14:440:14:47

And this is Sophia, who's made a colourful Let's Go Club wristband.

0:14:470:14:51

Welcome to the club, Sophia!

0:14:510:14:54

Those were some fantastic send-ins! Thanks, guys.

0:14:540:14:57

Now, it's time to catch up with some Let's-Goers at their Diwali party.

0:14:570:15:02

It's We Did This!

# The Let's Go Club #

# Let's go! #

0:15:070:15:08

Hello. My name's Sia.

0:15:080:15:10

And these are my friends, Jenvi, Demi and Priya.

0:15:100:15:16

We love celebrating Diwali.

0:15:160:15:20

Here's something you can do.

0:15:200:15:22

When it's Diwali, we like to decorate diyas.

0:15:220:15:26

A diya is a traditional lamp that is made out of clay.

0:15:260:15:30

It's time to decorate!

0:15:300:15:32

I'm going to paint mine red.

0:15:370:15:39

You can paint them any colour you like.

0:15:410:15:44

I'm putting dots on mine.

0:15:450:15:47

We're putting jewels and sequins on our diyas.

0:15:490:15:52

Once the diyas have dried, we're going to place them

0:15:540:15:57

round the house.

0:15:570:15:59

Diyas always look very pretty when they are on the window ledge.

0:16:000:16:05

My family makes traditional sweets on Diwali.

0:16:090:16:13

Everyone can try these nice sweets that my mum made.

0:16:130:16:17

Lots of family and friends come to see us on Diwali.

0:16:190:16:23

-Oh, wow!

-Yummy!

0:16:240:16:27

This is good!

0:16:300:16:32

We're decorating our living room with traditional Diwali decorations.

0:16:330:16:40

Can you light the diyas now, please, Mum?

0:16:400:16:42

Of course I can.

0:16:420:16:44

The light from the diyas are to help Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth,

0:16:460:16:52

find her way to our house.

0:16:520:16:54

ALL: Happy Diwali!

0:16:560:16:59

We love celebrating together

0:16:590:17:01

so we did this.

0:17:010:17:03

0:18:320:18:34
