Hello, my name's William. I'm seven years old. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
I really like playing with my dog, Samantha. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
I also like space and the solar system. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
But there's one thing I love more - my music therapy lessons. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
I've been having music therapy lessons in school for one year. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
'This is Harris. He's my best friend. Harris and me are both | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
autistic.' | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Being autistic means different things to different people. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
'For me, being autistic means that I sometimes find it hard to be | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
'confident around new people. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
'This is our music therapist, Waz. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
'In music therapy, we get to do lots of different activities together.' | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
OK, boys. The first thing that we're going to do | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
is have musical conversations. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
So that's when we've got to listen and we've got to look, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
and we've got to wait, and we've got to be patient. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
'For this game, we each take it in turns to play an instrument.' | 0:02:37 | 0:02:42
Before the next person plays, they must make eye contact. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:47
-OK, boys. Now it's time for the High Low Game! -Yay, the High Low Game! | 0:02:55 | 0:03:01
So, when I play a high note, you boys play your first instrument. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
And then, when I play a low note, you play the other instrument. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:17
'This can help Harris and me to learn how to do lots of | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
'different things all at once. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
'That's called multi-tasking.' | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
Hooray! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
Good job. For our last activity, we're going to do the thunderstorm. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:41
THEY MAKE NOISES | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Yeah. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48 | |
OK, so, the clouds are coming! The sky's getting darker. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
'For this game, we start playing music quietly, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
'and get louder and louder and louder! | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
'The thunderstorm game helps Harris with loud noises. Harris used | 0:04:00 | 0:04:05
'to wear ear defenders at lunch time, because it was so noisy. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
'Now, thanks to music therapy, he doesn't need to wear them any more. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
'Since going to music therapy, I feel less shy now. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
'I can even answer questions in class.' | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
-Yes, William? -50p. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
'Music therapy has helped me in so many ways, but, most of all, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
'I found a best friend.' | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
I'm William, and this is what I do. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
-# The Let's Go Club! Let's go! -# | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
KIRSTEN PLAYS A TUNE | 0:04:40 | 0:04:41
A big thanks to William for telling us all about your music therapy. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
The High Low Game looks like so much fun! | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
SHE PLAYS A TUNE | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
Now, it's quick trick time. This musical instrument may not | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
look like much, but you can get some brilliant sounds out of it. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
I present to you, the rubber glove bagpipes. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
So, for this, we're going to need a rubber glove, a cardboard tube, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
a straw, scissors, and some sticky tape. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
And you're going to need plenty of puff. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
So, the first step is to take your cardboard tube and fix your | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
rubber glove over the top of it. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
Make sure it's about halfway down the tube. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
Now, fasten it tightly with sticky tape. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
You need to seal it really tight so the air doesn't get out. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:41
OK. Now, we need to make a little | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
cut in the middle finger of your glove. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
Remember, scissors are sharp, so be careful. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
Then, we take our straw, and we fit it through the cut you've just made. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:57
Again, you've got to seal this one tightly with some sticky tape. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
Make sure that no air can escape. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Now all you need to do is take your cardboard tube in one hand, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
your straw in the other, make sure the glove's stretched nice and | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
tightly over the cardboard tube, take a deep breath, | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
-and blow! -SHE PLAYS A TUNE | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
You can try experimenting with different sounds by stretching it | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
tighter or looser. You can decorate it any way you want. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
I'm thinking of using some tartan paint. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
CHORD PLAYS | 0:06:28 | 0:06:29
And that's your quick trick done. Why don't you have a go? | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
And, if you do, be sure to send us a video of you playing your bagpipes! | 0:06:32 | 0:06:37
For all the details, just head to the CBeebies website. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
OK, ladies and gentlemen, here we go! | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
It's time for some marvellous musical facts. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
# The Let's Go Club! # | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
First up, cows like to listen to music. It's "udderly" true! | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
Cows that have gentle music played to them produce more milk | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
than cows who don't. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
When cows listen to soothing music at milking time, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
it makes them happy, comfortable, and relaxed. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
The happier a cow feels, the more their milk flows. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
So, if you want to double your dairy, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
you'd better put on some "moo-sic", and change the "mooood"! | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
Next, mosquitoes impress each other with love songs. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
All mosquitoes buzz. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
It's the sound their wings make when they flap super fast. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
But when a boy mosquito meets a girl mosquito he really likes, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
he flaps his wings faster and faster. Then, so does she, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
until they're flapping in time together. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
And this little sign of energetic affection makes the sound of | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
their buzzing exactly the same. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
Sounds like these music-loving insects really are in tune! | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
And, finally - brain freeze could help you be | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
a classical music composer. Ice cool! Ludwig Van Beethoven, | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
-a famous German composer... -Hello! -..used to dunk his head in | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
-a bucket of ice-cold water before he wrote a piece of music! -Ahh! | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
Beethoven claimed this chilly custom helped him to get in tune and | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
-think of new rhythms. -Hmm! | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
Well, it must have worked, because Beethoven wrote some of the | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
most well-known classical music for orchestras. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
But, please don't try this at home - it's snow joke! | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
# The Let's Go Club! Let's go! # | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
We've a new friend to welcome to the clubhouse today, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
Yolanda, but, before we do, she's got something to show you. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
SHE PLAYS A TUNE | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
-Woo! Give her a clap for that. -Thank you very much. -That was awesome. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
These guys are really curious to find out all about these | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
-instruments you've got. -I'll tell you all I know. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
-You've got the first question, don't you? -Why do you love saxophones and | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
playing them? | 0:09:01 | 0:09:02
The saxophone feels like a voice. It sings. People love the instrument. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:07
It feels the most natural to me. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
When I was growing up, I learnt the piano, the drums, the violin. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
Then I got to an age where I thought, "I'd like to play an | 0:09:13 | 0:09:17
"instrument that I have to use my wind to blow into it." | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
I was introduced to the saxophone and I never looked back. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
-I've got a question. -Yes! | 0:09:24 | 0:09:25
There's four different saxophones here. What makes them different | 0:09:25 | 0:09:30
-to one another? -So the main difference is their size. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
The longer the tube, the lower the note. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
So this tenor saxophone plays really, really low. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
If I play, like... | 0:09:39 | 0:09:40
-That's really my lowest note. -Oh! | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
Then we'd move up to the alto saxophone. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
And the alto is a little bit smaller, you can see, so it plays a | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
little bit higher, and a nice sound, too. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
-And then, we move to... -That's smooth. -It's smooth! | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
This is the saxophone you hear a lot in pop music, | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
so that's probably why. Then you have the soprano saxophone. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
Now, this one is straight, and it sounds very high, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
cos it's the shortest. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
And, kind of, a bit classical as well. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
The last one, which looks totally different from all of them, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
is an electric wind instrument. We call it the EWI. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
Sounds a little bit sci-fi. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:30
I'll give you a little sound of it. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
Now, this one plays very high, very low, and it can play lots of | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
different sounds. This is one of the sounds. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
SHE PLAYS VERY HIGH-PITCHED THEY LAUGH | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
It plays really nice sounds and you can change it, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
so it could sound like a piano or a guitar. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
For any Let's Go-ers who want to learn an instrument and | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
do what do you do, how do they go about that? | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
The main thing is be passionate about the instrument. When you | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
listen to music, which instrument stands out? | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
The piano, the bass, the voice? When you find out, that's the instrument | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
I think you should go for. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
That's amazing. Thank you for coming. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
Shall we give Yolanda a little clap and say thanks? | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
-Can you do us one more favour before you go? -Yes. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
-Can you play us out? -Which one shall I play? Alto sax? | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
OK, here we go. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:30
OK. From musical instruments to singing voices, | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
it's time to hear from two more club reporters. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
# Let's go! # | 0:11:42 | 0:11:43
