Welcome to a world where nothing is quite as it seems.

0:00:030:00:07

Welcome to Fake Britain!

0:00:070:00:09

Get down! Get your hands behind your back!

0:00:220:00:26

It's just an ordinary house. It could be anywhere in the country.

0:00:260:00:29

But this is a house that's filled with fakes,

0:00:290:00:32

and you may not know it, but your home could be full of them too.

0:00:320:00:36

During the series we'll be investigating the criminals trying

0:00:360:00:39

to get their hands on your cash by using forgeries, frauds and fakery.

0:00:390:00:44

And I'll be showing you how you can avoid being taken for a ride.

0:00:440:00:48

On today's show - some unexpected guests gatecrash a fake wedding.

0:00:510:00:55

The wedding's not going to happen today. You're under arrest.

0:00:550:00:58

The sophisticated fake £20 notes causing misery across the country.

0:00:590:01:03

He said, "You are going to prison."

0:01:040:01:06

I just could not believe that this was happening to me.

0:01:080:01:12

And the fake baby products that could kill.

0:01:120:01:15

You're likely to see internal bleeding of the organs.

0:01:190:01:22

Over 200,000 of us choose to tie the knot every year,

0:01:280:01:31

but not everyone's doing it for love.

0:01:310:01:34

There's a dedicated criminal industry using fake marriage

0:01:340:01:39

as a way around our immigration laws.

0:01:390:01:42

But unfortunately for some lying lovebirds,

0:01:420:01:45

the UK Border Agency has put itself on the guest list.

0:01:450:01:49

It's wedding day at Hillingdon Registry Office

0:01:530:01:56

for one happy couple.

0:01:560:01:57

And just around the corner

0:02:000:02:01

these surprise guests are dressed and ready for the big day.

0:02:010:02:05

The wedding's scheduled to take place today at 14:30 hours.

0:02:050:02:10

They're officers from the UK Border Agency.

0:02:110:02:14

And there's a good reason why lead officer Shahin

0:02:170:02:20

doesn't want to turn up to the ceremony late.

0:02:200:02:23

We've received notification from Hillingdon Council that what they

0:02:230:02:29

believe to be a fake wedding is going to be taking place this afternoon.

0:02:290:02:33

The intelligence they received from the Registry Office suggests

0:02:330:02:37

the bride and groom might not be your average loved-up couple.

0:02:370:02:41

Inside the underground car park of Hillingdon Registry Office,

0:02:430:02:47

the Border Agency officers get the invite they've been waiting for.

0:02:470:02:51

They're in the room, are they? OK, we're off.

0:02:510:02:54

And there's no time to lose.

0:02:540:02:56

When the officers arrive, the bride and groom are being held in a room.

0:03:000:03:04

Hello, there.

0:03:040:03:05

Susanna, you want to get up, please, for me?

0:03:050:03:08

This isn't exactly the wedding reception

0:03:080:03:10

the bride and groom had in mind.

0:03:100:03:12

We'll see you in two minutes, yeah?

0:03:120:03:15

The suspects need to be separated immediately

0:03:150:03:17

so they can't collaborate with each other to get their stories straight.

0:03:170:03:21

I'm going to ask you some questions, all right?

0:03:210:03:23

Shahin will question the groom, an Indian national,

0:03:230:03:26

whose student visa has expired.

0:03:260:03:29

In the room next door, his colleague Andy Kemp will question

0:03:290:03:32

the bride, who's from Hungary.

0:03:320:03:34

Going to start asking you some questions now.

0:03:340:03:37

Both officers are armed with the same set of questions,

0:03:370:03:40

designed to uncover the real truth behind this couple's wedding plans.

0:03:400:03:44

Where did you meet?

0:03:440:03:45

Where in Piccadilly?

0:03:470:03:49

You met in a park? In Piccadilly?

0:03:490:03:52

Which park?

0:03:540:03:55

Yeah, it's not quite the old classic love story.

0:04:010:04:04

Boy meets girl, boy can't quite remember where he met girl.

0:04:040:04:08

What did you talk about? What languages do you speak?

0:04:080:04:11

You speak Hungarian?

0:04:160:04:17

Give me two Hungarian words.

0:04:170:04:19

"Yo" means "good".

0:04:250:04:26

You speak three or four words of Hungarian.

0:04:260:04:29

The bride-to-be and her fiance can't have that much to talk about.

0:04:290:04:33

Whilst the groom speaks English but barely any Hungarian,

0:04:330:04:36

Andy Kemp is discovering that she speaks no English at all

0:04:360:04:39

and needs a translator to understand his questions.

0:04:390:04:42

Can you give me the names of the people living there?

0:04:420:04:44

INTERPRETER TRANSLATES

0:04:460:04:48

WOMAN REPLIES IN HUNGARIAN

0:04:480:04:50

She doesn't know the names of any of her supposed housemates.

0:04:550:04:58

Andy passes this information on to Shahin.

0:04:580:05:01

We've asked Susanna who else lives in your house.

0:05:020:05:06

Bearing in mind you live in a shared house.

0:05:060:05:09

She's been living there for almost six months...

0:05:090:05:13

..and she doesn't know who else lives in the house at all.

0:05:140:05:17

That's very strange.

0:05:170:05:19

Not no, yes! Yes, that is strange.

0:05:200:05:24

Something about this couple's love story just isn't adding up.

0:05:240:05:27

Surely the groom knows the names of his prospective in-laws.

0:05:270:05:31

The mother's name? What's her mother's name?

0:05:310:05:33

If somebody asks me what my fiance's mother's name is,

0:05:370:05:41

I will know just like that.

0:05:410:05:42

I'll put down "I don't know," yeah?

0:05:450:05:46

Because you haven't been able to tell me.

0:05:460:05:49

You just can't remember.

0:05:490:05:51

Can't remember, OK.

0:05:510:05:52

While he doesn't know his prospective mother-in-law's name,

0:05:520:05:56

there is one name the groom seems to be very familiar with.

0:05:560:06:00

Dad, what's his name?

0:06:000:06:02

Richard.

0:06:030:06:05

Her brother's name?

0:06:050:06:06

He's called Richard as well?

0:06:070:06:08

Father and brother are both called Richard. OK.

0:06:080:06:12

Where do you live?

0:06:120:06:13

Richards?

0:06:140:06:15

Yeah.

0:06:150:06:17

Everything's Richard.

0:06:170:06:18

When questioned about what they did together the previous evening,

0:06:180:06:21

things get even more confusing.

0:06:210:06:23

Can you tell me what you did last night?

0:06:230:06:25

INTERPRETER TRANSLATES

0:06:260:06:28

So you ate your burgers, you sat on your bed

0:06:360:06:39

and you listened to music on your laptop.

0:06:390:06:43

Their stories don't match and there's only one real conclusion.

0:06:430:06:47

It's clear to me and anyone who would hear this interview,

0:06:470:06:52

that you are not in a genuine relationship with this woman.

0:06:520:06:55

Um...

0:06:550:06:57

The wedding's not going to happen today. OK?

0:06:570:07:01

This man thought today he'd be reading his vows.

0:07:010:07:03

Instead Shahin is reading him his rights.

0:07:030:07:07

Anything you do say may be given in evidence. You understand?

0:07:070:07:11

You're under arrest.

0:07:110:07:12

Yeah.

0:07:140:07:16

He's going to be wearing handcuffs instead of a ring.

0:07:160:07:19

And rather than being joined in holy matrimony with his fake bride,

0:07:190:07:22

he's found himself joined at the wrist

0:07:220:07:24

to a burly Border Agency officer.

0:07:240:07:26

He'll be taken to an immigration detention centre and from there

0:07:270:07:31

we'll set removal directions for him to be removed back to India.

0:07:310:07:35

The groom's currently awaiting deportation.

0:07:350:07:39

WPC: Don't touch me like that! Let's go, please.

0:07:390:07:42

WOMAN SHOUTS IN HUNGARIAN

0:07:420:07:44

The bride-to-be is rather unhappy about being left at the altar

0:07:440:07:47

and the police have been called in to remover her from the premises.

0:07:470:07:51

There's not enough evidence for the UK Border Agency to arrest her

0:07:510:07:55

and as she's an EU citizen she's left to make her own way home.

0:07:550:07:59

It's a small win. You have to take the wins when you can.

0:07:590:08:02

Whether we'll win the war in due course, the jury's still out,

0:08:020:08:07

but certainly the small battles, we're winning.

0:08:070:08:09

It's not the first or last time this has happened, and coming up

0:08:140:08:18

we delve into the world of the fake wedding gang that made thousands.

0:08:180:08:22

This gang was making anywhere between £8,000 and £10,000 per fake wedding.

0:08:220:08:26

How many of these have you got in your purse or wallet?

0:08:330:08:36

A clean, crisp £20 note.

0:08:360:08:39

Well, hopefully not too many, because this one is fake,

0:08:390:08:42

although it looks and feels just like the real thing.

0:08:420:08:45

And that's the bad news.

0:08:450:08:47

The days when you could bank on being able to spot

0:08:470:08:50

a dodgy £20 note are long gone.

0:08:500:08:54

Counterfeiters have upped their game and you and I, we're the targets.

0:08:540:08:59

Previously, fake Britain was on the scene when City of London Police

0:09:030:09:06

uncovered one of Britain's largest ever counterfeit money operations.

0:09:060:09:11

The gang were caught red-handed with the professional-quality

0:09:120:09:15

printers, inks, papers and other equipment needed to produce

0:09:150:09:19

millions of pounds-worth of fake money.

0:09:190:09:22

Ringleader Anthony Higgs is now serving eight years in prison.

0:09:240:09:28

But there are other gangs out there still producing fake notes

0:09:280:09:32

of high quality.

0:09:320:09:33

Notes that are causing havoc across the country.

0:09:330:09:36

Purley in Surrey has seen a blizzard of fake notes in recent months.

0:09:380:09:43

Sunny Patel runs a convenience store just off the local high street.

0:09:450:09:49

And business was good until a routine visit to the bank

0:09:500:09:53

with the shop's takings burst his bubble.

0:09:530:09:55

What happened was, when we did our banking, we got a letter

0:09:580:10:01

from Alliance & Leicester and they said, "You've got a fake £20 note."

0:10:010:10:05

We think, "OK, once it could happen."

0:10:060:10:09

Unfortunately for Sunny, the fake 20 wasn't a one-off.

0:10:090:10:13

It just started occurring more and more.

0:10:140:10:16

So then afterwards we realised there is a lot of people

0:10:160:10:19

coming around here with fake notes.

0:10:190:10:21

And things got worse for Sunny as he realised that

0:10:220:10:25

a lot of the cash being handed over in the Good News convenience store

0:10:250:10:29

was very BAD news for business.

0:10:290:10:31

I've been so affected, I've had, like, £1,000-worth so far.

0:10:320:10:37

We're a small convenience store

0:10:380:10:40

and money at the end of the day counts for us. Every penny counts.

0:10:400:10:44

Sunny knows plenty of other local business owners.

0:10:440:10:47

He reckons he's not the only one who's been taken in by dud 20s.

0:10:470:10:50

At the moment in Purley, in Croydon, there's

0:10:520:10:54

so many fake notes going around.

0:10:540:10:56

There's an unbelievable amount and very good forgery.

0:10:560:10:59

Sunny's always handled cash and prides himself on his ability

0:11:000:11:04

to spot a fake note just by looking at it.

0:11:040:11:07

Until now, that is.

0:11:070:11:09

This is a real £20 note right over here.

0:11:090:11:11

As you can see, it looks crystal-clear.

0:11:110:11:14

Now I'm going to bring a duplicate right next to it.

0:11:140:11:17

Now, as you can see, you can't tell which is fake or real.

0:11:170:11:19

It's such a good quality, it's unbelievable.

0:11:190:11:22

The texture, everything, looks the same.

0:11:220:11:24

The icon there, there's an icon there.

0:11:240:11:26

They're both shiny as each other.

0:11:260:11:28

So it's very difficult to tell in this country what a fake note is

0:11:280:11:32

and what a fake note isn't.

0:11:320:11:33

Fake £20 notes have become so sophisticated,

0:11:350:11:38

it's not only business owners who have trouble spotting them.

0:11:380:11:42

We took to the streets to see if the great British public could

0:11:430:11:47

spot a fake £20 banknote.

0:11:470:11:49

Both of them are real.

0:11:490:11:51

Even the strips that I would normally look for, like,

0:11:510:11:55

the hologram strips and stuff, look really, really similar.

0:11:550:11:59

I would probably just take it and not even think about it.

0:11:590:12:02

I don't think I would have spotted it was wrong.

0:12:020:12:04

I'd just put it in my purse.

0:12:040:12:05

I wouldn't look at it at all. I'd just think, "Cheers!"

0:12:050:12:08

I think I'd accept it, probably.

0:12:080:12:10

And only when I got it pushed back at me I'd know it was wrong.

0:12:100:12:13

That's too good.

0:12:130:12:14

Most of the people we spoke to were fooled by these

0:12:140:12:17

sophisticated fake £20 notes.

0:12:170:12:20

We wanted to find out more about where these notes were

0:12:220:12:25

coming from and what can be done about them,

0:12:250:12:27

so we paid a visit to the Bank of England.

0:12:270:12:30

Deep in the vaults,

0:12:310:12:32

surrounded by billions of pounds of REAL cash, Head of Notes,

0:12:320:12:36

Victoria Cleland,

0:12:360:12:38

explained that fake money isn't a recent phenomenon.

0:12:380:12:40

Counterfeit notes have actually been in circulation as long as real notes.

0:12:420:12:47

I mean, it's a sad fact that as soon as banks started issuing notes,

0:12:470:12:51

counterfeiters started counterfeiting them,

0:12:510:12:53

and that's the same pretty much across the world.

0:12:530:12:56

And the counterfeiters aren't just small-time criminals.

0:12:560:12:59

There are a number of organised criminal gangs in the UK that

0:12:590:13:03

do produce counterfeit notes,

0:13:030:13:04

and, with the police, the bank are always trying to capture them.

0:13:040:13:09

But they've been busy.

0:13:110:13:13

Recent figures show that in one year alone,

0:13:130:13:15

there were about 375,000 counterfeit notes out there.

0:13:150:13:19

That's £6.3 millions-worth of fake notes flying around.

0:13:190:13:24

And with those notes getting more sophisticated,

0:13:240:13:27

it's getting harder to spot them with the naked eye.

0:13:270:13:29

Luckily, there's some portable technology out there that can

0:13:310:13:33

give us a helping hand.

0:13:330:13:35

This machine, if you put a genuine note through it,

0:13:350:13:39

it will say that's fine.

0:13:390:13:41

But you could take a counterfeit note, again of a 20,

0:13:410:13:44

put this into the machine...

0:13:440:13:46

BEEPING ..and it rejects it.

0:13:460:13:48

That's saying this is a counterfeit note.

0:13:480:13:50

Other, cheaper, machines use ultraviolet light to tell you

0:13:500:13:53

if you've got a fake note.

0:13:530:13:56

So this is the genuine £20 note

0:13:560:13:58

and you'll see a very clear diamond green and red.

0:13:580:14:02

If, however, I put the counterfeit £20 note in...

0:14:020:14:06

..you'll see none of that extra colour coming through.

0:14:080:14:10

The counterfeiters just haven't been able to replicate that.

0:14:100:14:14

But, Head of Notes, how big a problem are these counterfeit bills?

0:14:140:14:21

While the probability of receiving a counterfeit note

0:14:210:14:23

is absolutely tiny -

0:14:230:14:25

a fraction of one per cent of all notes out there is counterfeit -

0:14:250:14:28

it is important for people to be aware that there is a potential risk

0:14:280:14:32

there, and the best thing to do is check notes when you receive them.

0:14:320:14:36

So the Bank of England says fake money isn't a big problem,

0:14:380:14:42

but it is out there and, when it turns up,

0:14:420:14:44

it has the power to destroy lives.

0:14:440:14:46

Coming up, we see how the new breed of £20 notes can lose you

0:14:470:14:51

a lot more than your business.

0:14:510:14:53

They can take your pets away from you.

0:14:530:14:55

I felt sick cos I thought, "My babies have gone!"

0:14:550:14:58

And even get you locked up.

0:14:580:15:00

I thought, "God, what's going to happen?

0:15:000:15:02

"I'm never boing to see England again!"

0:15:020:15:04

Every year, proud parents spend a small fortune on

0:15:100:15:14

sporty buggies like this.

0:15:140:15:15

But, as you may have guessed,

0:15:150:15:17

because it's the Fake Britain house, this is a fake!

0:15:170:15:21

Have a look at this.

0:15:210:15:23

The real thing, and Noah is safely tucked up inside it.

0:15:230:15:28

Now, this model could cost you over £500.

0:15:280:15:32

With that kind of money on offer, no wonder the fakers are interested.

0:15:320:15:36

But they're not necessarily interested in safety.

0:15:360:15:39

And that's bad news for babies.

0:15:400:15:42

Kelly Turner is a mum-to-be who likes her prams. A lot!

0:15:450:15:50

I love the fabrics, I love the textiles,

0:15:500:15:52

the different chassis finishes.

0:15:520:15:54

Anything that's unique, I love.

0:15:540:15:56

This is a Phil & Teds E3 in red.

0:15:580:16:00

This is a Buzz 3, with three wheels, in a strawberry fabric.

0:16:000:16:04

This is a Maxi Cosi Mura 3.

0:16:040:16:06

I actually bought this to match an outfit I was wearing to a wedding.

0:16:060:16:09

I think it's fair to say I know my prams.

0:16:100:16:13

Yes, Kelly is a pram-head.

0:16:130:16:15

But when baby number three was on the way, there was

0:16:150:16:18

only one pram that would do - the Bugaboo Cameleon.

0:16:180:16:21

With Bugaboos having such a great reputation for quality, they're also

0:16:220:16:27

great for customising, so from our point of view

0:16:270:16:31

I could have one buggy and make it look like 20 different buggies.

0:16:310:16:35

Kelly trawled the internet and it wasn't long before what

0:16:370:16:40

seemed like a perfect brand popped up.

0:16:400:16:44

It was a lady selling it that had just had a baby shower and her and

0:16:440:16:47

her partner had bought one already, so she wanted to sell the excess.

0:16:470:16:52

There was no doubt about it, this was her pram,

0:16:540:16:57

and she had her heart set on it.

0:16:570:16:59

So she and her husband Sam went ahead

0:16:590:17:02

and paid a hard-earned £663 for it.

0:17:020:17:05

When the buggy actually arrived,

0:17:060:17:08

it was like Father Christmas had arrived.

0:17:080:17:11

We ran into the front room and Sam carried the parcel through behind me.

0:17:110:17:14

And it was just really lovely. It was really exciting.

0:17:140:17:17

Husband Sam had worked long and hard to get the money for the pram.

0:17:180:17:22

I wanted to save the pennies and make sure we got the right one.

0:17:220:17:26

So I'm working Saturdays, you know, staying late,

0:17:260:17:29

trying to save up the money for this.

0:17:290:17:33

And at first sight the Bugaboo buggy and its packaging looked perfect.

0:17:330:17:37

When you open it out, this is what you get.

0:17:370:17:41

There's the tailored fabrics, which have the branding on.

0:17:410:17:46

And as well as that, it also has the owner's manual,

0:17:460:17:49

which again is branded, it's on heavy-quality paper.

0:17:490:17:53

It's got the instructions.

0:17:530:17:55

Um, they're very clear, there's no spelling mistakes.

0:17:550:17:58

None of these things make you think that it's anything other than

0:18:000:18:03

a genuine Bugaboo.

0:18:030:18:05

But then looks can be deceiving.

0:18:050:18:07

And as they assembled the pram,

0:18:070:18:09

it was clear that it fell way below expectation.

0:18:090:18:12

The quality just wasn't there.

0:18:120:18:15

This pram was a sham.

0:18:150:18:18

Look at that! Both wheels...

0:18:180:18:20

Now, I'm no expert on buggies, but...it's quite self-explanatory.

0:18:220:18:28

It's not right. If that came off going down a hill,

0:18:280:18:31

Kelly, you've got no chance of stopping it, have you?

0:18:310:18:34

And what about the brakes?

0:18:340:18:36

We've noticed that if Sam pushes the buggy, one wheel is static

0:18:360:18:40

and the other wheel is still moving.

0:18:400:18:42

It doesn't take a pram expert to know that there was something

0:18:430:18:46

seriously wrong with Kelly's new pram.

0:18:460:18:49

Armed with the pram's serial number,

0:18:490:18:51

she called Bugaboo to find out what was going on.

0:18:510:18:55

I said, "Could you confirm what model it's for?"

0:18:550:18:58

And she said, "For a 2009 silver model,"

0:18:580:19:01

and that's when the alarm bells started to ring, because the model

0:19:010:19:05

I had in front of me was black and it was absolutely a 2011, 2012 model.

0:19:050:19:09

And that's when I really panicked.

0:19:090:19:11

Bugaboo had confirmed Kelly's worst fears, that she and Sam

0:19:140:19:19

had indeed spent £663 on a fake Bugaboo Cameleon.

0:19:190:19:24

The fakers were using genuine Bugaboo serial numbers

0:19:240:19:27

on their fake Bugaboo prams.

0:19:270:19:29

With just weeks to go before giving birth to her daughter,

0:19:290:19:33

Kelly was inconsolable.

0:19:330:19:35

My face fell. I was just devastated. I just knew straight away.

0:19:350:19:38

I couldn't believe it!

0:19:380:19:40

It sounds really dramatic,

0:19:410:19:43

but it really took some of the shine off the pregnancy

0:19:430:19:45

because it was such a worry, because we had this lump of metal

0:19:450:19:49

and fabric that we could do nothing with.

0:19:490:19:52

I was very angry.

0:19:520:19:54

For someone to do that, for someone to make a fake buggy...

0:19:540:19:57

try and sell it on for some money, to make money

0:19:570:20:00

and got no conscience about putting a baby in it...

0:20:000:20:04

don't care about the risks of it. I was very angry.

0:20:040:20:07

The fake Bugaboo buggy left the couple without a trustworthy pram

0:20:090:20:13

to put their new baby in.

0:20:130:20:16

It's been awful. It really has.

0:20:180:20:20

It's been so upsetting and, you know,

0:20:200:20:22

the worry that the child, the baby's going to come home from the hospital

0:20:220:20:26

and we're not going to have a buggy is huge.

0:20:260:20:29

Thankfully, Kelly and Sam did manage to get a genuine safe pram

0:20:310:20:35

in time for the arrival of their new baby daughter a few weeks later.

0:20:350:20:39

We spoke to Bugaboo about the counterfeiting of their prams.

0:20:410:20:44

They said:

0:20:440:20:46

But prams aren't the only baby product out there being faked.

0:20:580:21:01

Coming up, we investigate the fake child car seats putting

0:21:010:21:05

children's lives at risk.

0:21:050:21:06

It could lead to strangling of the neck.

0:21:060:21:09

Earlier, we followed the UK Border Agency on an operation to

0:21:170:21:20

stop a fake wedding in its tracks.

0:21:200:21:23

The wedding's not going to happen today.

0:21:230:21:28

But this fake wedding isn't an isolated case.

0:21:280:21:32

Take a look at these happy couples.

0:21:320:21:34

The kisses, the confetti.

0:21:340:21:37

These aren't wedding videos.

0:21:390:21:40

This is covert surveillance filmed by the UK Border Agency

0:21:410:21:45

of a series of fake weddings

0:21:450:21:48

and they were all arranged by one fake wedding criminal gang.

0:21:480:21:51

The main ringleader

0:21:540:21:55

and orchestrator of the fake wedding gang was Maria Loureiro.

0:21:550:21:58

She lived in London. She was an interpreter by occupation.

0:22:000:22:05

The perfect cover to participate in hundreds of weddings.

0:22:050:22:09

Maria Loureiro seen here at Liverpool Airport was

0:22:090:22:12

the Portuguese facilitator of the fake weddings.

0:22:120:22:15

First, she'd arrange for Portuguese brides to fly into the UK.

0:22:150:22:20

Maria's role included introducing the brides to the

0:22:200:22:23

grooms for the first time.

0:22:230:22:24

Taking them to a number of institutions in the UK

0:22:240:22:28

to support the applications.

0:22:280:22:29

Setting up bank accounts and utility companies, all of which were fake.

0:22:290:22:33

After the European brides had the fake documentation they needed

0:22:330:22:37

for a marriage in the UK, they were then ready to marry

0:22:370:22:40

their Indian grooms at registry offices across the North of England.

0:22:400:22:44

And these couples weren't tying the knot for love.

0:22:440:22:47

The fake weddings take part for two reasons.

0:22:470:22:50

The first reason is for the Indian nationals to marry a European national.

0:22:500:22:55

The Indians then get to stay in the UK.

0:22:550:22:57

The other obvious advantage for the EU nationals, in this case,

0:22:570:23:01

the Portuguese, is that they were able to make some money.

0:23:010:23:04

Some serious money.

0:23:040:23:06

Maria was making anywhere between £8,000 and £10,000 per fake wedding.

0:23:060:23:11

When this conspiracy was at its peak there were at least two weddings

0:23:110:23:14

taking place every week.

0:23:140:23:16

So it was conceivable that Maria was earning £20,000 every week

0:23:160:23:20

for her part in the fake weddings.

0:23:200:23:22

The brides themselves were earning anywhere between £500 and £2,000.

0:23:220:23:26

With just such huge profits at stake, Loureiro had to make

0:23:260:23:30

each fake wedding look as real as possible.

0:23:300:23:33

The brides went to a lot of effort with their dress.

0:23:330:23:35

They were getting off the plane wearing normal kind of western European tops.

0:23:350:23:40

And then 24 hours later they'd be in full Indian dress

0:23:400:23:44

with Indian jewellery.

0:23:440:23:45

And on the wedding day itself, Maria Loureiro made sure

0:23:460:23:50

the ceremony looked as convincing as possible.

0:23:500:23:53

There's anything from confetti to genuine family members turning up

0:23:530:23:57

with children, taking photographs.

0:23:570:23:59

And of course, wedding pictures can be crucial if you're trying

0:23:590:24:02

to convince someone that you should be allowed to stay in the UK.

0:24:020:24:05

So Maria Loureiro would take the couple to local parks

0:24:050:24:09

for photo opportunities.

0:24:090:24:10

There's even one of a bride and a groom play-acting around a tree.

0:24:100:24:14

But Maria Loureiro became anxious that attending

0:24:150:24:18

so many different fake weddings at the same registry office

0:24:180:24:21

might raise eyebrows so she decided that blondes might have more fun.

0:24:210:24:26

She wanted to create a fake identity.

0:24:260:24:29

So she could continue to keep using Blackburn Registry Office

0:24:290:24:32

and deceive the registrars.

0:24:320:24:34

But it was the platinum blonde disguise that led to the

0:24:340:24:37

gang's downfall.

0:24:370:24:39

Her disguise most certainly backfired on her.

0:24:390:24:41

She went for a particular shade of blonde which was really

0:24:410:24:44

different than her normal hair, and that really alerted the registrars

0:24:440:24:48

and then consequentially the Border Agency.

0:24:480:24:51

The UK Border Agency sprang into action with Operation Frampton.

0:24:530:24:57

A covert mission to film the fake weddings

0:24:570:25:00

and gather enough hard evidence to take down the fake wedding gang.

0:25:000:25:05

It didn't take them long to capture the tell-tale signs that these

0:25:050:25:08

weddings were not what they seemed.

0:25:080:25:10

Some of the wedding breakfasts weren't as romantic

0:25:100:25:12

as you might expect.

0:25:120:25:14

It certainly isn't normal that they have the wedding breakfast in McDonald's.

0:25:140:25:17

On the most important day of their life and then they're enjoying some fast food at other ends of the table.

0:25:170:25:23

The UK Border Agency finally had enough video evidence to

0:25:230:25:26

arrest the fake wedding gang.

0:25:260:25:28

The gang received in excess of 18 years imprisonment.

0:25:290:25:32

The main organiser, Maria, she was sentenced to 45 months

0:25:320:25:36

and all the brides and grooms took sentences between 14 and 18 months.

0:25:360:25:40

This gang, without question,

0:25:420:25:43

had the capability to be one of the most prolific gangs that we

0:25:430:25:47

would have seen doing fake marriages in the northwest.

0:25:470:25:50

Earlier, we saw how fake £20 notes are bruising British business

0:25:590:26:04

and how the fakes are getting so good

0:26:040:26:06

that you'll probably need a machine to spot them

0:26:060:26:09

but right across the country innocent members of the public

0:26:090:26:12

are falling prey to fake money,

0:26:120:26:14

sometimes with heartbreaking consequences.

0:26:140:26:16

In Leeds, Kim Sewards has her hands full with two children

0:26:200:26:23

and three dogs.

0:26:230:26:24

Give me Fifi as well.

0:26:270:26:29

All of this while running the charity that was set up

0:26:290:26:32

in the name of her daughter, Kiah.

0:26:320:26:34

She had a massive fit.

0:26:340:26:36

And I took her to the doctor's and she had a CT scan

0:26:360:26:41

and she had a brain tumour.

0:26:410:26:43

After a life-saving operation, Kiah made a full recovery and mum,

0:26:430:26:47

Kim, wanted to find a way to help others going through the same thing.

0:26:470:26:51

We agreed to set up Kiah's Dream and it helps people like me

0:26:510:26:58

that had no information whatsoever.

0:26:580:27:01

Busy with home life and running the charity,

0:27:010:27:03

Kim was left with little choice when three dogs became five.

0:27:030:27:08

Kim decided to sell the puppies on the internet.

0:27:080:27:10

A chance to make someone happy and for the money to go to a good cause.

0:27:100:27:14

This is the actual advert and it says boy and girl Chihuahua.

0:27:140:27:18

It says that £100 from each sale will go to Kiah's Dream.

0:27:180:27:22

With two cuddly Chihuahua puppies on offer, it wasn't long

0:27:220:27:25

before they got some interest.

0:27:250:27:27

A guy phoned, really interested in them.

0:27:270:27:31

And I thought, yeah, we'll let them go, he's nice,

0:27:310:27:34

sounds nice, they're going to a good home.

0:27:340:27:37

But when the puppies' prospective new owners turned up,

0:27:370:27:40

something about them wasn't quite right.

0:27:400:27:43

The door went and there were two skinny runty looking lads.

0:27:430:27:49

They didn't look like they sounded on the phone but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

0:27:500:27:54

Whilst the men were a bit rough around the edges,

0:27:540:27:57

their money looked OK.

0:27:570:27:59

It was just a nice big wad of £20 notes. Very crisp looking. Nice.

0:27:590:28:05

But the deal was about to go horribly wrong.

0:28:060:28:09

They very quickly scarpered out the door

0:28:100:28:13

and that's when I thought something's wrong, really wrong.

0:28:130:28:18

Taking a closer look at the £20 notes, Kim realised they weren't

0:28:180:28:21

what they appeared to be.

0:28:210:28:23

I checked every 20 under the light

0:28:230:28:26

and every single 20 were fake. £700 of fake 20s.

0:28:260:28:31

Shocking. I felt sick.

0:28:320:28:34

And the realisation that she'd lost her puppies for fake cash

0:28:380:28:41

left Kim truly shaken.

0:28:410:28:43

I thought I was going to collapse.

0:28:450:28:46

I fell to the floor because I thought my babies have gone.

0:28:460:28:50

It made me just a nervous wreck.

0:28:500:28:52

I couldn't go out of the house for days.

0:28:520:28:54

I was scared they were going to come back, do something else,

0:28:540:28:58

try and get the other puppy.

0:28:580:29:00

But it's Kim's daughter, Kiah, who's really distraught about the puppies.

0:29:000:29:04

She just wants to know what happened to them.

0:29:040:29:08

I thought they'd either get killed or they've been

0:29:080:29:10

thrown into a lake in a carrier bag and all that.

0:29:100:29:14

I do miss them because... Erm...

0:29:160:29:18

Mum... One minute.

0:29:200:29:22

They're not our doggies any more.

0:29:280:29:30

Some kid will be looking after them

0:29:300:29:32

and playing with them lots in the garden.

0:29:320:29:35

KIAH SOBS AND LAUGHS

0:29:350:29:38

The fake money is a double blow for the family.

0:29:380:29:41

Not only have they lost the puppies but Kiah's brain tumour charity

0:29:410:29:45

won't now be getting the donation that it needs.

0:29:450:29:48

It would have been £200 and it would have helped so much. I was gutted.

0:29:480:29:52

I'm really, really upset that that's going to lose out my charity.

0:29:530:29:59

It's made Kim much more suspicious about the money that she

0:29:590:30:02

comes into contact with.

0:30:020:30:04

Now I'm a little bit more careful because if you use

0:30:040:30:07

it in the wrong place and you have no idea because they're so good.

0:30:070:30:09

They can get you into trouble.

0:30:110:30:12

And trouble is exactly what Anne West

0:30:160:30:18

and her husband Barry from Wales ran into.

0:30:180:30:20

Each year for the last 18, they've swapped the rolling Welsh countryside

0:30:220:30:27

for the exotic surroundings of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

0:30:270:30:31

The main attraction of going to Abu Dhabi for us is the sunshine.

0:30:340:30:40

The people. Just the way of life.

0:30:400:30:43

Their last trip began like any other

0:30:440:30:47

with Anne withdrawing £2,000 from her local bank.

0:30:470:30:50

But it was when they arrived in Abu Dhabi

0:30:520:30:55

and Anne tried to change her British pounds into the local currency,

0:30:550:30:59

the United Arab Emirates dirham,

0:30:590:31:01

that the holiday dream started turning sour.

0:31:010:31:04

We were just told one of the £20 notes was a fake one.

0:31:040:31:08

We said, it can't be fake, I brought it from my bank.

0:31:110:31:14

And then a load of people gathered around us that were bank employees.

0:31:170:31:21

To make sure we weren't going to run for it I suppose. I don't know.

0:31:210:31:26

At first, the couple weren't overly concerned.

0:31:260:31:29

Barry and I were standing there just sort of a bit laughey and jokey

0:31:290:31:33

really, fully expecting to walk away and they would keep that note.

0:31:330:31:39

But then the police turned up.

0:31:390:31:41

And Anne and Barry realised it wasn't very funny any more.

0:31:410:31:45

I did realise that they thought that I was this...

0:31:450:31:51

counterfeiting grandmother or whatever but I did say to them...

0:31:520:31:57

I'm just an ordinary everyday little grey-haired old grandma.

0:31:580:32:02

Granny or not, the police weren't messing around with someone

0:32:040:32:07

who they believed might be a master counterfeiter.

0:32:070:32:11

They immediately transferred Anne and Barry to a prison

0:32:110:32:14

some way out of town where the man in charge had some very bad news.

0:32:140:32:18

He said you have to stay, you are going to prison,

0:32:200:32:23

your husband can go.

0:32:230:32:24

We were stunned. We were numb.

0:32:260:32:29

I think that's the right description, we were numb.

0:32:290:32:32

I just could not believe that this was happening to me.

0:32:380:32:41

Barry went off, he was allowed to just say goodbye quickly

0:32:480:32:53

and that was that.

0:32:530:32:56

Off he went. Into the dark night.

0:32:560:32:58

Anne was now all alone inside a prison cell.

0:33:010:33:04

I just lay down on this bunk bed.

0:33:050:33:09

Dirty mattress. No sheets.

0:33:090:33:12

Dirty pillow, no pillowcase, no anything, no blankets, nothing.

0:33:120:33:16

Laid on that and just thought I've got to go to sleep.

0:33:160:33:19

I've got to forget about it.

0:33:190:33:21

I'll hopefully wake up and it'll be a bad dream.

0:33:210:33:23

But this was no bad dream. It was the real thing.

0:33:250:33:28

Anne was being held on suspicion of counterfeiting money

0:33:280:33:31

and she was starting to struggle with the idea.

0:33:310:33:34

I just felt as if it couldn't really be happening.

0:33:340:33:37

I was...I don't know, sort of...closed down inside.

0:33:370:33:44

When it was time to appear in front of the judges,

0:33:450:33:48

Anne thought things would finally be cleared up. No such luck.

0:33:480:33:52

Two of the three judges said guilty.

0:33:530:33:55

And so back to prison.

0:33:580:33:59

I thought, God, what's going to happen?

0:34:030:34:05

I'm never going to see England again. I, you know, my family.

0:34:050:34:10

It was a desperate time for Anne and in prison her mood continued

0:34:120:34:16

to darken.

0:34:160:34:17

I thought, I'm not going to get out of here.

0:34:170:34:19

And I can't, I can't be like this. This can't be the rest of my life.

0:34:190:34:26

So I was trying to think of what I could do that would sort of end it.

0:34:260:34:31

Get me out of it.

0:34:310:34:32

If this is going to be my life it's, it's not worth living.

0:34:340:34:39

Anne's husband Barry knew he needed to act quickly.

0:34:440:34:47

The emotional state that Anne was in was very, very bad.

0:34:500:34:53

She was sobbing.

0:34:530:34:54

She was saying why me, why me, what have I done to deserve this?

0:34:540:34:57

Barry did everything he could to clear Anne's name,

0:34:580:35:01

contacting the embassies in Abu Dhabi and London.

0:35:010:35:04

All of a sudden the news they'd been waiting for came in.

0:35:070:35:10

One of the prison warders said, "British, come".

0:35:100:35:15

So I got up and followed her through. And she said, "You go".

0:35:170:35:22

Just like that,

0:35:250:35:27

Anne's three-day ordeal in an Abu Dhabi prison was over.

0:35:270:35:30

The authorities finally understood she was an innocent victim of

0:35:300:35:34

a fake banknote and not a counterfeiting criminal mastermind.

0:35:340:35:38

Back in Wales,

0:35:400:35:41

she realised it wasn't going to be over quite that quickly.

0:35:410:35:45

I was in a bad state. I was sleeping all the time.

0:35:450:35:49

I was just sitting around like a zombie not doing anything,

0:35:490:35:52

not eating.

0:35:520:35:54

The memory I have of Anne in prison, in a very bad state,

0:35:550:36:00

sobbing her heart out will live with me forever.

0:36:000:36:03

The emotional impact of that one £20 note really has...

0:36:050:36:10

Scarred us for life.

0:36:100:36:12

It's amazing to think something that small,

0:36:130:36:19

really that insignificant could have caused all this trouble.

0:36:190:36:25

For Anne and Barry, time has proven a great healer.

0:36:280:36:31

Amazingly their experience hasn't put them off

0:36:310:36:34

holidaying in Abu Dhabi.

0:36:340:36:35

These days, the first thing the Wests do before going on holiday

0:36:370:36:41

is run all their money through a counterfeit note checker.

0:36:410:36:44

Wherever we go there's always room for our friend in the suitcase.

0:36:440:36:48

Earlier on we heard how a heavily pregnant mum lost over £600.

0:36:560:37:01

On a worryingly rickety fake buggy.

0:37:010:37:04

Fakers making money out of parents who are trying to get

0:37:050:37:08

the best for their kids at the best price is one thing

0:37:080:37:11

but when it puts those kids at risk, that's quite a different matter.

0:37:110:37:15

Now this car seat is supposed to be there

0:37:150:37:17

to protect your child in the case of an accident.

0:37:170:37:20

But as you're about to see, it does anything but.

0:37:200:37:23

It's a fake and it's on sale online right now.

0:37:230:37:26

Hannah Davies from Birmingham Trading Standards is worried

0:37:300:37:32

about the rising number of fake baby products coming into Britain.

0:37:320:37:36

A worrying new trend is a trade in fake car seats like this one.

0:37:370:37:42

It's very, very flimsy material.

0:37:420:37:44

More like a child's bib than a car seat, I think you'll agree.

0:37:440:37:49

Frankly, the fakers of this car seat haven't done a very good job of it.

0:37:490:37:53

Oh, there you go. Well, it's obviously not sewn in very well.

0:37:530:37:57

It's a baby product with suspect safety credentials.

0:37:570:38:01

Many of the claims that are made on these instructions are fake.

0:38:010:38:04

This ought to meat a European standard.

0:38:040:38:06

Clearly it doesn't, it therefore makes it fake in that respect.

0:38:060:38:10

Hannah was so concerned about fake safety labels on potentially

0:38:130:38:16

dangerous car seats that she decided to dig a little deeper.

0:38:160:38:21

People look for these labels and if the car seat isn't approved

0:38:210:38:25

then unfortunately, you know, you're dicing with death literally.

0:38:250:38:29

She took to the Internet to see whether we might be able to

0:38:290:38:32

buy a fake and potentially dangerous car seat.

0:38:320:38:36

It took her just seconds to find one.

0:38:360:38:38

Portable child safety seat qualifies to the ECE standard regulation.

0:38:400:38:46

The car seat claims to meet a strict European safety

0:38:460:38:49

regulation known as ECE R44 but Hannah's not so sure.

0:38:490:38:55

Birmingham Trading Standards

0:38:570:38:58

and Fake Britain were so concerned about the safety

0:38:580:39:01

claims on this car seat that we bought it

0:39:010:39:03

and sent it for testing at the Transport Research Laboratory.

0:39:030:39:06

Hamish McPhillips from TRL's Child Safety Centre is

0:39:090:39:12

an expert when it comes to testing the safety of children's products.

0:39:120:39:16

And he's immediately spotted a problem with ours.

0:39:160:39:19

A seat must be released by one single action.

0:39:200:39:23

This is so that if you have an accident,

0:39:230:39:25

you need to get the child out quick, you know, the car may be on fire.

0:39:250:39:28

With this seat you can't actually do that.

0:39:280:39:31

Even from a first quick inspection by eye, Hamish can tell

0:39:310:39:35

there's something not quite right about this car seat's safety claims.

0:39:350:39:39

The seat we have here has got the approval label

0:39:390:39:41

on the instruction markings but from what we've seen

0:39:410:39:44

of the seat just visually, it doesn't meet the requirement.

0:39:440:39:50

Now it's crunch time.

0:39:500:39:51

How will the car seat bought by Birmingham Trading Standards

0:39:510:39:55

and Fake Britain fair in a crash test?

0:39:550:39:58

A child-sized crash test dummy will be used to analyse

0:39:580:40:02

whether the car seat would protect a child in an accident.

0:40:020:40:05

This is the clay which we'll use to replicate the internal

0:40:050:40:10

organs of the Child and look for any damage or intrusion into that clay.

0:40:100:40:16

After the test we can take this out and see for any signs of injury.

0:40:160:40:20

The test involves strapping the crash test dummy into the car seat

0:40:220:40:26

and then accelerating the seat into a wall at 30 miles an hour

0:40:260:40:29

to simulate a car crash.

0:40:290:40:32

Tests like this can be dangerous so the area needs to be clear.

0:40:330:40:37

The initial results are shocking.

0:40:520:40:54

So...first reaction is we can see the belt's held quite heavily

0:40:570:41:02

on the neck there so it could lead to strangling of the neck.

0:41:020:41:05

And what's happened to the seat itself?

0:41:070:41:09

The shoulder harness has cracked the polystyrene guide.

0:41:100:41:14

Now we can remove here we can see part of the damage to the seat.

0:41:140:41:18

The structure's actually broken here.

0:41:180:41:21

It's quite shocking to see that failure.

0:41:210:41:24

But the most devastating evidence is revealed

0:41:240:41:27

when they check the dummy.

0:41:270:41:29

So as we can see with the clay for this one we've seen a deep

0:41:290:41:33

penetration of the clay there. It's been cut into.

0:41:330:41:36

We'd be likely to see internal bruising or internal

0:41:360:41:40

bleeding of the organs which we'd be really concerned about.

0:41:400:41:46

Hamish is so worried by the results of the test that he

0:41:460:41:49

investigates further with a frame by frame analysis of the crash.

0:41:490:41:53

You can see the lap belt here actually disappearing

0:41:530:41:56

into the dummy's abdomen.

0:41:560:41:59

We'd be likely to see really severe internal injuries

0:41:590:42:03

to the child's organs.

0:42:030:42:05

Another concern is the diagonal belt we can see up here riding right

0:42:050:42:08

next to the neck.

0:42:080:42:10

It's very likely that there's some serious neck injuries.

0:42:100:42:13

It's a miserable safety failure for the car seat we've bought.

0:42:130:42:17

And there's no longer any doubt in Hamish's mind about the seat's

0:42:170:42:21

safety credentials.

0:42:210:42:22

Looking at the instruction manual we can see the approval label on here.

0:42:270:42:30

This would appear to be a fake claim that the seat's been approved.

0:42:300:42:35

The results of the test, the breakages,

0:42:350:42:37

the clay damage to the clay, we would not be able to give the seat

0:42:370:42:42

this approval label if we were to test it here.

0:42:420:42:46

Birmingham Trading Standards are using the shocking results

0:42:480:42:51

of our car collision test as evidence.

0:42:510:42:54

The seller of the dangerous car seats has now been tracked down

0:42:540:42:58

and investigations are ongoing.

0:42:580:43:01

That's all from Fake Britain. Bye-bye.
