Welcome to a world where nothing is quite as it seems.

0:00:040:00:07

Welcome to Fake Britain.

0:00:070:00:09

SHOUTING

0:00:090:00:11

-Get your hands behind your back! Now!

-Get your hands behind your back now!

0:00:220:00:26

It's just an ordinary house. It could be anywhere in the country,

0:00:260:00:29

but this is a house that's filled with fakes

0:00:290:00:32

and you may not know it,

0:00:320:00:34

but your home could be full of them too.

0:00:340:00:36

During the series, we'll be investigating the criminals

0:00:360:00:39

trying to get their hands on your cash

0:00:390:00:41

by using forgeries, frauds and fakery.

0:00:410:00:44

And I'll be showing you how you can avoid being taken for a ride.

0:00:440:00:48

Coming up, we uncover a black market in fake car servicing software

0:00:490:00:54

that could put your life at risk.

0:00:540:00:57

There are actual very significant safety implications

0:00:570:01:00

for the general public.

0:01:000:01:02

How fake henna could scar you forever...

0:01:020:01:06

There is no such thing as black henna.

0:01:060:01:08

My hands and arms were burning. The pain was too much, you know?

0:01:080:01:12

And how top of the range chefs' knives are being faked

0:01:120:01:15

and sold to the public and restaurants around the country.

0:01:150:01:19

We opened the box, looked at the knives

0:01:200:01:22

and were pretty gobsmacked at what we saw.

0:01:220:01:24

This is henna decoration.

0:01:310:01:33

It's a plant extract that's used in hair and beauty products,

0:01:330:01:37

it's natural, it's safe and as you can see,

0:01:370:01:40

-Denise, it's very beautiful.

-Thank you.

0:01:400:01:42

This however, is quite different. It's black henna.

0:01:420:01:46

People are fooled into thinking

0:01:460:01:47

that black henna is just a different type, a different colour of henna,

0:01:470:01:51

but it's not. It's a fake. There's no such thing as black henna.

0:01:510:01:56

It's in fact an illegal and dangerous chemical concoction,

0:01:560:02:00

that deceives and harms the people that use it.

0:02:000:02:03

Ah!

0:02:050:02:06

Simon Loxham lives in Surrey with his wife

0:02:060:02:08

and two children, Gabriel and Ruben.

0:02:090:02:11

Come on, Gabe! Come here!

0:02:110:02:13

They went on an annual family holiday to Spain.

0:02:140:02:17

And a couple of days into the holiday,

0:02:180:02:20

Gabriel and Ruben wanted to get temporary henna designs

0:02:200:02:23

painted on their arms from an artist they'd seen on the beach.

0:02:230:02:27

We kept seeing this tattooist on the seafront.

0:02:280:02:32

We were being hassled every day by the children

0:02:320:02:36

and after a few days, we decided to get it done.

0:02:360:02:40

Simon had no idea of the dangers of black henna or what was in it.

0:02:400:02:44

There was no mention of black henna or anything like that.

0:02:450:02:50

It was seen very much as a temporary thing

0:02:500:02:52

and something for a bit of fun on holiday.

0:02:520:02:56

Everyone was delighted with the result.

0:02:560:02:59

And they looked fantastic for a few days,

0:02:590:03:03

they were really black and looked nice

0:03:030:03:05

and the boys loved them.

0:03:050:03:06

Simon and his family enjoyed the rest of their holiday

0:03:060:03:09

and the children loved their painted designs.

0:03:090:03:12

But when they returned home, the fun stopped.

0:03:140:03:17

About a week after we arrived back in the UK,

0:03:180:03:21

the black started to fade,

0:03:210:03:24

but in place of that started this blistering

0:03:250:03:27

and his arm over a few days progressively

0:03:280:03:31

was raised in a perfect scorpion blister.

0:03:320:03:37

Horrified, Simon and his wife rushed Gabriel to the doctor's,

0:03:370:03:41

but they were just as shocked.

0:03:410:03:43

They didn't know what it was.

0:03:440:03:46

The doctor thought that he'd actually had a real tattoo.

0:03:460:03:49

It looked that bad.

0:03:490:03:51

But things even worse,

0:03:520:03:53

as the dangerous chemicals started reacting with Gabriel's body

0:03:530:03:56

and they were poisoning him.

0:03:570:03:59

The scab started to disappear and move into, um,

0:03:590:04:04

sort of, a weeping, pus-sy mess.

0:04:040:04:07

And he started getting spots all around his arm.

0:04:070:04:10

At one point, it was literally dripping,

0:04:110:04:14

there so much fluid coming out of his skin.

0:04:140:04:17

You were eating breakfast, weren't you and I had to

0:04:170:04:19

almost mop up underneath you with a tissue,

0:04:190:04:22

it was dripping so much.

0:04:220:04:24

Terrified, Simon took Gabriel back to the doctor's.

0:04:240:04:28

Tests revealed that the culprit was Paraphenylenediamine, known as PPD.

0:04:290:04:34

PPD is a colourless chemical,

0:04:350:04:37

but it reacts with oxygen to give it a colour.

0:04:370:04:40

It's added to natural henna to turn it black.

0:04:410:04:45

It was something that was painted on the skin,

0:04:450:04:48

and as a result of being painting on the skin had seeped into his skin

0:04:480:04:52

and was attacking his body from the inside.

0:04:520:04:56

That was quite frightening that something so innocent and fun

0:04:560:05:02

had actually damaged his body on a permanent basis.

0:05:020:05:06

The doctor said the chemicals were attacking his body

0:05:060:05:09

and if we didn't sort it out soon, he could become quite ill.

0:05:090:05:13

Eventually, the blister cleared up,

0:05:150:05:18

but it's left a severe and lasting effect on Gabriel.

0:05:180:05:21

You can see on his arm, still, a scorpion shape.

0:05:220:05:26

It's more noticeable when he's got a bit of colour after a holiday.

0:05:270:05:31

And he's now over-sensitised to PPD.

0:05:310:05:36

Gabriel needs to be careful,

0:05:360:05:38

as PPD is found in many household products

0:05:380:05:41

and contact with them could cause him a severe reaction.

0:05:410:05:45

It's in textile and hair dyes,

0:05:450:05:47

black rubber, petrol, and photocopying and printing inks.

0:05:470:05:51

But it's banned in skin products in the UK and across the EU.

0:05:510:05:57

It's something he'll have to be careful of for the rest of his life.

0:05:570:06:00

Later, we discover that fake henna isn't only being used

0:06:000:06:04

on the beaches of Europe.

0:06:040:06:05

It's also openly available on British high streets,

0:06:050:06:08

as one woman knows only too well.

0:06:080:06:11

It's not like any other illness.

0:06:120:06:15

It's not for one or two days and then you get better.

0:06:150:06:17

It was just terrible. It was just, it was too much.

0:06:170:06:20

This disc contains all the technical information you need to service

0:06:280:06:31

over 15,000 different types of vehicle.

0:06:310:06:34

It's sold to garages up and down the country.

0:06:350:06:37

They pop it in a computer and out comes

0:06:370:06:40

everything they need to know to look after your car properly.

0:06:400:06:44

But it's also a target for fakers.

0:06:460:06:48

And that's putting you and me at risk on the roads.

0:06:480:06:52

Garages need service information

0:06:530:06:55

to make sure a car is looked after properly.

0:06:550:06:58

In Slough, mechanic Andy knows how important this information is

0:06:590:07:02

and how things have changed.

0:07:020:07:05

Back in the 1970s when cars were much less complicated

0:07:050:07:09

and nowhere near the amount of electronics,

0:07:090:07:12

we just needed a little book like this and this book contained

0:07:120:07:16

all the information that you really needed to know.

0:07:160:07:19

Today, vehicles are so sophisticated and complex,

0:07:200:07:23

they need something much more detailed.

0:07:230:07:26

We've got 15,000 plus vehicles which could come in to the garage

0:07:280:07:33

and obviously that amount of information

0:07:330:07:35

can't be contained in a little book anymore.

0:07:350:07:37

All the information is now computerised

0:07:370:07:39

and one of the systems mechanics use is Autodata.

0:07:400:07:43

Everything they'll need, including all the latest manufacturer updates,

0:07:430:07:46

it's all on a computer disc.

0:07:470:07:49

It basically gives us

0:07:490:07:51

all the information that we need to know.

0:07:510:07:53

What operations need to be carried out,

0:07:530:07:55

what needs to be checked, what needs to be replaced.

0:07:550:07:56

The information costs several hundred pounds every year

0:07:560:07:59

on an annual subscription.

0:07:590:08:01

Details of more than 80 manufacturers for cars

0:08:010:08:04

going back to 1959 - they're are all on the system.

0:08:040:08:08

Right, the first thing that we'll check is the tyre pressures.

0:08:080:08:11

If there's an underinflated tyre, it's dangerous.

0:08:120:08:15

But manufacturers update information all the time,

0:08:150:08:18

so the computerised system is constantly updated too

0:08:180:08:21

and garages are made aware of the changes.

0:08:220:08:24

The fake discs are copies of older versions of the system

0:08:250:08:28

and are not registered with the company.

0:08:280:08:31

They won't have recent updates or get any new ones.

0:08:310:08:34

That means the servicing won't be done properly

0:08:340:08:36

and that could have dangerous consequences for you and your car.

0:08:370:08:40

Rod Williams, Chief Executive of Autodata,

0:08:420:08:45

is worried that the fakers are putting the motoring public at risk.

0:08:450:08:49

If you take your vehicle in to a garage,

0:08:490:08:52

you're trusting them... They're working on your brakes for example

0:08:520:08:55

to make sure that you can stop the car in case of an emergency.

0:08:550:08:58

The implications for this kind of counterfeiting

0:08:580:09:01

and faking activity aren't just about the actual counterfeiting

0:09:010:09:04

and someone else making a fast buck.

0:09:040:09:06

There are actual very significant

0:09:060:09:08

safety implications for the general public.

0:09:080:09:11

Rod feels the situation is now so serious

0:09:110:09:14

that Autodata is using private investigators like Julian French

0:09:140:09:18

to track the fakers down.

0:09:180:09:20

In Kent, he's hoping to catch a couple red-handed

0:09:200:09:23

selling the fake software.

0:09:230:09:24

He's posing as a customer wanting to buy the disc.

0:09:250:09:28

Today we're hoping to meet up with a seller

0:09:290:09:33

offering illegal Autodata software.

0:09:340:09:36

This is a joint project, involving the police and Trading Standards.

0:09:360:09:40

The suspects targeted are posing as Autodata employees.

0:09:400:09:45

The actual person herself

0:09:450:09:47

told some of the people that she actually worked for Autodata.

0:09:470:09:50

On other occasions she's told people that she used to work for Autodata.

0:09:500:09:54

What she seems to be doing is trying to make out that what she's selling

0:09:560:09:59

is actually genuine software but it's just she's selling it cheap.

0:09:590:10:04

But we know for a fact, we know it's counterfeit software.

0:10:040:10:07

Julian is working with the police and Trading Standards,

0:10:090:10:12

their identities have to remain hidden.

0:10:120:10:14

They're hoping to catch some sneaky software sellers in the act.

0:10:150:10:19

They've agreed to meet the suspects in a supermarket car park.

0:10:190:10:22

Right, this is a good place for us to be able to watch the vehicle

0:10:240:10:28

where the deal is going to go down.

0:10:280:10:29

We can sit back here,

0:10:290:10:31

we can see the movement from the people in there

0:10:310:10:33

and we'll be able to see the signal from our colleague in there,

0:10:330:10:36

who's going to let us know when the deal's done

0:10:360:10:38

so we can go in and arrest the person selling the counterfeit software.

0:10:390:10:42

The police and Trading Standards wait in an unmarked car.

0:10:440:10:47

Private investigator Julian waits to meet the suspects in his own car,

0:10:470:10:51

in another part of the car park.

0:10:520:10:54

No-one's sure whether they'll turn up.

0:10:540:10:56

RADIO: 'We're going to view the CCTV and give you a call.

0:10:560:10:59

Time is ticking, and it doesn't look good.

0:11:000:11:03

After three hours of waiting,

0:11:040:11:05

just as the team are about to call off the operation, there is news.

0:11:060:11:09

We've just taken a call from our colleague

0:11:090:11:12

to let us know the target is on his way.

0:11:120:11:16

And it looks like one of the suspects

0:11:160:11:18

has turned up alone to do the deal.

0:11:180:11:20

Julian gets into the suspect's car on the other side of the car park.

0:11:200:11:25

He's pretending to be the customer.

0:11:250:11:27

That one.

0:11:270:11:28

Him in the Focus.

0:11:280:11:30

And once the deal's done, the police spring into action.

0:11:300:11:34

He's got the disc.

0:11:340:11:36

Basically I've just been supplied with a disc,

0:11:500:11:53

a blank disc, which I believe to be Autodata.

0:11:530:11:56

Obviously we'll take that back and check it to make sure what's on it.

0:11:560:11:59

Paid £80.

0:11:590:12:00

I was told to ring a lady at 8pm tonight

0:12:000:12:05

who would give me instructions to install it on my computer.

0:12:050:12:07

So we've got her details.

0:12:070:12:09

At the moment this is the guy who delivered it,

0:12:090:12:11

we believe this to be the partner of the person who I spoke to earlier.

0:12:110:12:15

The Autodata seller has been arrested

0:12:150:12:18

and he knows he's in serious trouble.

0:12:180:12:20

And the policeman is suspicious

0:12:310:12:33

that he been warning someone on his mobile when he was arrested.

0:12:330:12:37

Pardon?

0:12:390:12:41

-Just someone.

-Just someone.

0:12:420:12:44

-Yeah, just someone.

-Who's that?

-It doesn't matter who it was.

0:12:440:12:47

The car is searched thoroughly.

0:12:470:12:50

Julian and the team think their operation today has been a success.

0:12:500:12:54

Very pleased we've identified both subjects now, which is great.

0:12:540:12:58

We've recovered quite a bit of evidence which will be processed.

0:12:580:13:01

The couple involved will be prosecuted.

0:13:010:13:04

And more of these types of operations

0:13:040:13:06

are going to be carried out in the future.

0:13:060:13:08

It used to be that if you did a bit of cooking you just had knives,

0:13:170:13:20

but thanks to celebrity chefs that's not enough for most of us any more.

0:13:200:13:25

We have to have professional chef's knives like this one.

0:13:250:13:28

Very expensive.

0:13:280:13:30

But then all of these,

0:13:300:13:31

well, as you might expect from the Fake Britain house,

0:13:310:13:34

they're all fakes, and they're not cheap either.

0:13:340:13:37

You've guessed it,

0:13:370:13:38

when it comes to chef's knives, fakers are carving up the market.

0:13:380:13:43

All of these knives are fake.

0:13:450:13:47

If they were real they'd be worth thousands.

0:13:470:13:50

Surrey Police discovered them by chance

0:13:500:13:52

when they stopped a suspicious van.

0:13:520:13:54

The police arrested the driver, Michael Orchard,

0:13:540:13:58

and passed the knives onto Rob Charlton

0:13:580:14:00

at West Berkshire Trading Standards.

0:14:010:14:03

We've never dealt with anything,

0:14:040:14:06

with counterfeit stuff such as this before.

0:14:060:14:09

I was absolutely shocked, firstly the volume of it.

0:14:090:14:12

But also surprised at how much this stuff actually costs.

0:14:120:14:16

This is top of the range stuff and very expensive.

0:14:160:14:18

A set of knives like these if they were the real thing

0:14:180:14:21

would sell for over £1,000.

0:14:210:14:24

Richard Foster from London, loves cooking

0:14:260:14:28

and thought buying top-notch knives would be a sound investment.

0:14:280:14:32

He decided a set from Global would be perfect.

0:14:320:14:35

The reason for wanting a good quality knife set

0:14:360:14:38

was because they would last.

0:14:380:14:40

I would expect these to last a lifetime almost,

0:14:400:14:43

so in reality I don't think they are actually that expensive.

0:14:430:14:46

It does make a difference when you're cooking undoubtedly.

0:14:460:14:49

And it's like a precision piece of engineering.

0:14:490:14:51

Richard searched online and found the set he wanted

0:14:510:14:55

from an independent seller.

0:14:550:14:57

He was selling them as liquidated stock,

0:14:570:14:59

I think he mentioned he was a chef.

0:14:590:15:00

So I bought the set of nine knives and a sharpener for £470.

0:15:000:15:06

I had absolutely no reason to think there was anything untoward.

0:15:060:15:10

The knives he had his eye on retail on the high street for over £1,000,

0:15:100:15:14

so Richard thought he was getting a fantastic deal.

0:15:140:15:17

It wasn't long before a set similar to these arrived.

0:15:170:15:22

When I got the knives I was very excited.

0:15:220:15:25

I opened them up and I showed my wife a tomato

0:15:250:15:28

in lots of anticipation.

0:15:280:15:30

"Watch this, it's going to be amazing".

0:15:300:15:32

And it just bent in half and it didn't even cut through the tomato.

0:15:320:15:35

So there was clearly something wrong there.

0:15:350:15:38

That excitement was quickly blown away.

0:15:380:15:40

Richard had expected the knife to be extremely sharp.

0:15:400:15:44

Becoming suspicious, he looked a bit closer

0:15:440:15:46

at exactly what he'd bought.

0:15:460:15:47

The quality of them didn't look quite right,

0:15:480:15:49

the packaging didn't look that good.

0:15:500:15:51

I suspected there was something wrong with them.

0:15:510:15:54

And one thing in particular didn't add up.

0:15:540:15:56

The giveaway for me was the handles,

0:15:580:15:59

there were some black spots that were painted.

0:15:590:16:01

And it looked somebody had filled it in with a marker pen.

0:16:010:16:05

The marks weren't central.

0:16:050:16:08

I wouldn't expect that for a £1,000 set of knives.

0:16:080:16:12

I suspected they were probably fake.

0:16:130:16:15

Convinced they weren't the genuine knives he'd paid for,

0:16:150:16:18

Richard contacted the seller.

0:16:190:16:20

I was annoyed, I sent him an email,

0:16:200:16:22

I disputed the fact they were genuine.

0:16:230:16:25

He said they were, he said was a chef and he'd sold lots of them,

0:16:250:16:29

I think 20 sets.

0:16:290:16:30

Insisting they were real,

0:16:300:16:31

the seller wouldn't give Richard his money back.

0:16:320:16:34

But, Richard wasn't going to give up that easily.

0:16:340:16:37

The follow up email I told him I would send them to Global Knives

0:16:380:16:42

to see if they were counterfeit.

0:16:420:16:43

The seller then agreed to a refund if the knives were sent back.

0:16:440:16:48

That's exactly what Richard did

0:16:480:16:50

and it confirmed his suspicions that they were fake.

0:16:500:16:53

After this bad experience,

0:16:530:16:55

Richard forked out for a real set and was amazed at the difference.

0:16:550:16:59

You can literally lay them on top something

0:16:590:17:01

and they just go straight through.

0:17:010:17:03

So the quality was completely different.

0:17:030:17:05

People who sell the fakes also target restaurants.

0:17:070:17:10

We took some of the fakes to Cicchetti restaurant in London

0:17:100:17:14

to show them to well-known chef Aldo Zilli.

0:17:140:17:17

I never experienced fake knives until 10 years ago in this country.

0:17:170:17:23

You get the odd people that try to sell you things at the back door.

0:17:240:17:28

We've got two knives here, one's fake and one's real.

0:17:280:17:31

And the branding is much more prominent on the fake one.

0:17:310:17:34

You know, because they want you really to believe it.

0:17:340:17:37

The sharpness, this real one is, to the finger,

0:17:370:17:42

is quite sharp.

0:17:420:17:44

This is quite blunt.

0:17:440:17:45

And then the noise.

0:17:460:17:47

This is very noisy, this is nice and quiet.

0:17:480:17:50

The weight,

0:17:500:17:51

this is a lot heavier than the one that's fake.

0:17:510:17:54

Of course, the proof is in the pudding. Or the starter.

0:17:560:17:58

We haven't got time in the kitchen

0:17:580:18:00

to be sharpening knives every 5 minutes.

0:18:000:18:04

If this knife doesn't cut properly,

0:18:040:18:05

then my finger will be part of this.

0:18:050:18:09

This is the fake one.

0:18:110:18:12

It doesn't feel as nice, doesn't feel as heavy.

0:18:130:18:16

I can feel that I need to look

0:18:190:18:20

because I'm not too confident with this one.

0:18:200:18:23

Confidence is everything with a knife.

0:18:230:18:26

Wusthof, a German company, has been manufacturing knives for 200 years.

0:18:290:18:34

Their products are sold all over the world,

0:18:340:18:36

including here, in Harrods.

0:18:360:18:38

Paul Shelley from Wusthof was sent some of the fake knives

0:18:390:18:42

found by the police in that van in Surrey.

0:18:420:18:45

We opened the box, looked at the knives

0:18:460:18:49

and were pretty gobsmacked with what we saw

0:18:490:18:51

and felt a little bit sorry for, obviously,

0:18:510:18:53

people that would be buying those sort of items

0:18:540:18:56

because the quality and craftsmanship just wasn't there.

0:18:560:18:58

While the fake knives might look very similar,

0:18:580:19:01

Wusthof say the fakers can't reproduce the real thing,

0:19:010:19:04

which has gone through dozens of traditional and expensive processes.

0:19:040:19:08

All of them still manufactured in Germany,

0:19:080:19:10

and that goes through a process of over 38 to 40 manufacturing steps.

0:19:100:19:16

From the start, single blank of steel, to the end result.

0:19:160:19:19

Rob Charlton from West Berkshire Trading Standards

0:19:210:19:24

had started an investigation

0:19:240:19:26

into what the van driver Michael Orchard had been up to.

0:19:260:19:29

Orchard originally denied knowing anything about the fake knives.

0:19:290:19:33

But Rob discovered some crucial evidence.

0:19:340:19:36

These invoices that were seized by the police,

0:19:380:19:40

related to individuals that were in the forces.

0:19:400:19:44

So clearly what he was doing was going onto military bases

0:19:440:19:47

and selling this equipment.

0:19:470:19:48

Rob also obtained security photos

0:19:490:19:51

proving that Orchard had been to those bases.

0:19:510:19:53

That was enough to prosecute him.

0:19:530:19:56

Michael Orchard pleaded guilty in court

0:19:560:19:58

to three charges under the Trademarks Act.

0:19:580:20:01

But although Rob and his team stopped Orchard,

0:20:020:20:04

they have no idea how many fake knives are still out there.

0:20:040:20:08

Earlier, we saw the horrifying story

0:20:160:20:18

of young Gabriel Loxham

0:20:180:20:20

who suffered a terrible reaction

0:20:200:20:22

to a fake henna decoration

0:20:220:20:24

that was put on his skin while he was on holiday.

0:20:240:20:26

But black henna designs aren't just available

0:20:270:20:29

to holiday makers in Europe.

0:20:300:20:31

They're freely available on the high street in the UK,

0:20:320:20:34

to customers who don't realise they are dangerous and illegal.

0:20:350:20:39

Architecture student Rozghar from London

0:20:420:20:45

wanted to get henna decorations for the first time,

0:20:450:20:48

and decided to get them applied professionally at a salon.

0:20:480:20:52

She's asked for her identity to be disguised.

0:20:520:20:55

It was Eid so I wanted to go to a shop

0:20:550:20:58

and have the henna done.

0:20:580:21:00

I decided to do the black henna

0:21:010:21:03

because I thought it was more dramatic,

0:21:030:21:05

it's more a nicer colour and darker.

0:21:060:21:08

Rozghar was happy with the result.

0:21:080:21:10

Her designs had a mixture of real brown henna

0:21:100:21:12

and fake black henna outlines.

0:21:130:21:15

But within a day, her pretty design had turned ugly.

0:21:150:21:19

After 24 hours of getting the black henna done

0:21:220:21:25

the reaction had started.

0:21:250:21:27

It was getting very red, itchy, burning feel to it.

0:21:280:21:35

You can see that her skin has reacted

0:21:350:21:37

to the black fake henna outlines,

0:21:370:21:39

while the brown henna is just fading away naturally as it should.

0:21:390:21:43

After that then it started to get blistery,

0:21:440:21:47

the pain was on going throughout nights and days.

0:21:470:21:53

The pain, it was too much, you know.

0:21:560:21:59

When the pain and itchiness got too severe Rozghar went to the doctor,

0:22:010:22:04

but the medication she was prescribed didn't help.

0:22:050:22:09

It was all over both my arms, the itchiness all over.

0:22:090:22:14

My hands and arms were burning, I felt like it was almost burning.

0:22:140:22:21

Whenever I did apply something,

0:22:210:22:23

it would stop it for maybe a couple of hours

0:22:240:22:26

and then it would start all over again.

0:22:260:22:28

And a few days later, things became even worse.

0:22:290:22:32

The illegal ingredient PPD that's

0:22:320:22:34

found in black henna had poisoned Rozghar.

0:22:350:22:38

On the eighth day my left hand started to swell

0:22:390:22:42

so then I realised I should go to the hospital.

0:22:420:22:45

The doctor saw it and obviously was amazed at how bad it was.

0:22:450:22:49

For two weeks she was in agonising pain

0:22:490:22:52

and she may now be scarred for life.

0:22:520:22:55

I don't know if it will go away,

0:22:550:22:58

it may do, it may not.

0:22:580:22:59

It was just terrible, it was too much.

0:23:000:23:02

As a result of Rozghar's appalling injury,

0:23:050:23:07

Kari Aslam and his team from Newham Trading Standards

0:23:070:23:10

tackle the salon that applied her henna.

0:23:100:23:13

Straightaway Kari finds what he's looking for.

0:23:150:23:18

Yeah, because this is black henna we're going to have to seize this.

0:23:180:23:21

Our customers buy them,

0:23:220:23:23

they don't seem to have a problem with the henna.

0:23:230:23:25

Or is it because it's black henna that you're taking it?

0:23:260:23:28

It says there on there it is black henna.

0:23:280:23:30

They find confirmation in the bookings diary

0:23:330:23:36

that Rozghar was treated here.

0:23:360:23:38

The team take a look in the salon area where the henna is applied

0:23:420:23:45

and are horrified by the posters on display.

0:23:460:23:48

It seems even children have black henna put on their skin here.

0:23:500:23:54

Children as well.

0:23:550:23:56

Yes, but they have to get a consent form.

0:23:560:23:58

We usually say don't put it on for kids

0:23:580:24:00

so most parents don't put it on for the kids,

0:24:000:24:02

they just get the orange one done.

0:24:020:24:04

But some of this black henna has gone onto kids?

0:24:040:24:07

Have you applied it to any children?

0:24:070:24:09

People have signed it, yeah.

0:24:090:24:11

And have you got that documentation?

0:24:110:24:13

It's on the same thing, it's written next to it,

0:24:130:24:15

but if it's for a kid it will say parents signed for.

0:24:150:24:18

The shop seems to be fully aware

0:24:180:24:20

that the black henna could be dangerous when applied to the skin.

0:24:200:24:24

The business has written notices on the wall as you can see here.

0:24:260:24:30

We need to make further enquiries by speaking to the owner

0:24:300:24:33

who's unfortunately not here today.

0:24:330:24:35

It shows to us that they know about the dangers

0:24:350:24:37

but they're still carrying on despite.

0:24:380:24:40

So this makes it a little bit worse really for the owner.

0:24:400:24:42

The salon selling the fake henna

0:24:430:24:44

and offering to apply it to customers' skin

0:24:450:24:47

is now under investigation and could face prosecution.

0:24:470:24:51

Newham Trading Standards are cracking down on the shops

0:24:520:24:55

that sell the dangerous henna.

0:24:550:24:57

Today they're on their way to a busy shopping area.

0:24:580:25:01

I'm from Newham Council Trading Standards.

0:25:020:25:04

What we're here to do is look at black henna paste products

0:25:040:25:07

and we do know you're selling some down there.

0:25:070:25:10

You might also know that it's illegal in this country

0:25:100:25:12

to sell black henna paste.

0:25:130:25:14

-Not legal?

-No, it's not legal, it's illegal.

0:25:140:25:17

The store is searched and Nick and Kari are shocked

0:25:200:25:23

to find a huge number of black henna products for sale.

0:25:230:25:27

Without knowing what's in there we've no idea of knowing

0:25:270:25:30

what the risks are to the user,

0:25:300:25:32

what kind of reactions may be taken to it.

0:25:320:25:34

The fake henna just keeps coming

0:25:350:25:37

and often the packaging isn't even in English.

0:25:370:25:41

Consumer can't see what it is, they can't even tell what's inside it.

0:25:410:25:45

It could be black henna paste, could be anything in there.

0:25:460:25:48

Yes, no ingredients list.

0:25:490:25:50

Well, it could be an ingredients list but I don't speak Arabic.

0:25:500:25:53

There seems to be another problem

0:25:530:25:55

as Kari spots some dubious-looking bottles of perfume.

0:25:550:25:59

As Nick predicted, one form of fakery has led to another.

0:25:590:26:03

In the back of the shop, Nick finds a fake perfume operation hidden away.

0:26:210:26:25

Now, it doesn't seem likely

0:26:260:26:28

that brands such as Dior and Chanel

0:26:280:26:31

would distribute their perfume in these bottles.

0:26:310:26:34

That's Obsession, and Paris and various other imitation perfumes.

0:26:350:26:42

All with the names on there

0:26:420:26:43

of what they are presumably meant to smell like.

0:26:440:26:47

Not quite sure if that does smell like Obsession,

0:26:500:26:52

I don't profess to be a connoisseur!

0:26:530:26:54

But nonetheless quite clearly

0:26:550:26:58

a lot of this all being used

0:26:580:26:59

to top up the sort of counterfeit fragrances

0:26:590:27:02

and the officers will be seizing those as well.

0:27:020:27:05

Not normally the kind of thing you store in a toilet.

0:27:060:27:08

Well it's eau de toilette, Nick.

0:27:080:27:10

He fetches a shop worker to get an explanation

0:27:100:27:14

but he blames the boss.

0:27:140:27:15

Could you explain to me about this, please?

0:27:170:27:21

What do you do with them?

0:27:230:27:24

Nick and Kari seize the bottles, all 93 of them.

0:27:340:27:37

This shop is now in serious trouble.

0:27:380:27:41

Hope that's replica of the perfume rather than actual poison.

0:27:410:27:45

The shop worker is still trying to convince Nick

0:27:470:27:49

that it's not fake perfume.

0:27:490:27:51

Don't sound very Arabian to me, Dunhill, or Cool Water.

0:27:540:27:58

With their huge haul of henna and their fragrant fakes,

0:27:580:28:02

It's bag it and tag it

0:28:020:28:03

for Nick, Kari and the team from Newham Trading Standards,

0:28:030:28:06

as hundreds of dangerous fakes are taken off the shelves.

0:28:070:28:10

That's all from Fake Britain today, bye bye.
